Sigh. Yet more comments whenever a camera is mooted that 'well I have mine behind my tv so I wouldn't use it'. Like that's how Apple suggest you position the box. A camera in the front would work great for FaceTime, Zoom etc. Lots of potential for business use as well as home. If you must have your box behind the tv then you won't be using the camera. I will.

Where does Apple say how to position it?

Even if it's not behind a TV, I'd imagine a LOT of folks have them in cabinets, near other media gear, etc... all places that aren't where a camera would work or be a good idea.

It's a streaming box with a bluetooth remote. I have no idea why anyone would actually want to have it out in the open, in front of their TV, with cables running out the back of it.

Si
If the increased speed is used for something nice, like better upscaling - great.

Putting a camera on the device is useless. Not only due to "why would I use it?", but also due to the devices not exactly being positioned to give good/any picture from a built in camera. A better suggestion would be to enable usb connected webcams.
Since my two 4k ATVs are behind my TVs, a camera would be useless

And besides, having a simple USB-C port could allow so much other things in addition to a USB camera. People that don't want a camera don't pay for one. Pick the best camera. I love anything that's flexible.

I’m running a gen1 4K, and none of this is making me feel I must upgrade.

What would? Probably 4K/120Hz with full HDMI2.1b especially in combination with an M-series SoC (probably an M3— current 3nm process, and the M2 is nearing EOL.) That would open the doors to some pretty awesome gaming potential, as well as (if rumours are correct) allow for 4K/120 content for F1 (and other sports) streaming.

As for audio, I know it’s unlikely we’ll ever get TrueHD (or DTS:MA) but I can dream. More likely would be proper pass-through, though this would likely mean dropping all the menu clicks and other injected sounds. All of this would be possible with an M-series chip but doubtful with an A-series.

They could do an AppleTV & an AppleTV Pro. That would be very interesting. 64GB and 128GB models for the base paired with an A-series chip and get that nice low price point. Then have the Pro with 256GB+ and an M-series chip, extra audiophile/videophile/gaming features, and set the premium price accordingly.

I would be jumping to get in line for a Pro device like that. But if these rumours cover everything - nah. Old one is still working just fine.

(As for a camera - nope! My AppleTV lives in my sideboard under the TV, so a camera would be useless. Already have the option to use an iPhone or iPad as a camera, so what more is needed? Especially if the forthcoming J490/HomePad has a camera as expected.)

My Apple TV 4K already supports 4k Dolby Vision and Atmos. It also sends 5.1 and 7.1 in LPCM to my avr. If it’s not for competing with game consoles, what is the faster chip for?? Apple Arcade games are Sega Master System level and already play as bad as they can with the remote.

I would also like Dolby True Hd, but i don’t think it’s a matter of hardware but one of bandwidth.

The big thing I want is for it to be linked as if it was a HomePod, so when I tell Siri in one room to play something on all speakers, it plays it on the Apple TV too. Bonus point if it’ll go get content from my local library, but since Apple, hates owned content, I don’t expect that.

Probably just a spec jump. But that makes for boring news so Gurman throws in a juicy off-broadway rumor about a FaceTime camera.
My guess is that the FaceTime "camera" rumor actually originated from a "HomePad device" spec leak...?

At what point? HDMI 2.1 supports TrueHD audio, 4K/120Hz video (more actually), along with lanes for speaker-positioning (ATMOS) and dynamic HDR (Dolby Vision). The HDMI 2.1a spec is slightly better with the same bandwidth, but I’m not sure of hardware support for that. That’s not talking about the HDMI 2.2 spec that has only just been finalized and won’t see consumer hardware for years (outside of somewhat questionable cables).

With my LG C4 and Sonos ARC system I can use the full range of TrueHD ATMOS and 4K/120Hz Dolby Vision but currently only via BluRay or a PC.

If you mean internet bandwidth, I’d largely agree but there is a push for better fibre in North America (and honestly we lag behind quite a few places in Europe and Asia). That also doesn’t account for a) people who are streaming their own media within a LAN, and b) that either the better audio or video would both be beneficial on their own never mind together. Think F1 or sports streaming for example - 4K/120 with Dolby Vision would be AMAZINGLY immersive with buttery-smooth replays but you don’t need any better audio than we already have. On the flip side, a true lossless multitrack audio master of an orchestra would be jaw-dropping, but doesn’t need any video data at all.

Edit to add: but again, hypothetically this is all for an AppleTV Pro with the premium price point. This isn’t the device that grandma will be picking up for Christmas, or come as a “gift with two-year subscription” from your ISP.

The camera positioning doesn’t matter much with the new wide-angle FaceTime cameras.
The camera positioning matters a whole lot when the Apple TV is mounted behind the TV or in a cabinet or some such - the necessity to have it visible went away when they went to bluetooth for the remote. And a lot of them subsequently got put in less accessible locations.

Also, I'd probably put tape over any camera on the Apple TV itself (eh, likely someone would/will come up with a nice self-adhesive little plastic shutter that one can slide open to use the camera - I'd probably go with something like that). I don't have any other cameras inside my house that have permanent access, and I don't intend to add any in the future.

My atv is hidden behind my tv. A camera makes no sense for me. It seems they could add connectivity for cameras
I suppose they might be able to come up with a WiFi connected camera, for those that wanted it, that could be positioned either above or below an existing TV, while the ATV box is hidden per usual.

No need for wifi, just wired. The wire can be hidden very easily with a TV and if your Apple TV box is close enough for HDMI then it's close enough for a USB cable. Then use any camera you want.

The latest gen apple tv 4k is too slow at switching frame rate and dynamic range format that I have match content turned off. I don’t like the momentary black screen when it switches, which is often. An update that makes this snappy would be great
