The camera positioning doesn’t matter much with the new wide-angle FaceTime cameras. Like on the M4 Macs, the camera can follow you around the room regardless of positioning.

Nobody wants a USB webcam with extra wires etc laying about. Yuck.

Many have their aTV mounted on the back of their TV (using those handy VESA mount brackets) out of sight (no visible box, no visible wires)
Integrated webcam would be useless; external webcam mounted on top of TV would be discreet and perfect.

Apple TV hardware is such an underrated device IMO. It works very well and is fairly inexpensive.
I couldn’t agree more. Bought a new TV for the bedroom about 5 years ago, but the interface was very slow and it only got a few updates. App makers have already abandoned it, but attaching my 10(!) year old Apple TV HD makes it feel like a new TV. And even though the TV is 4K, due to the software being insanely slow the 1080p Apple TV allows for better quality video. We have a new TV in the living room where the interface is quite fast, but nothing is matching the Apple TV. Some simple things like the keyboard in the Remote app don’t even exist with the companion software for most TVs, let alone iPad support.

I wish Apple would allow the remote from the Mac though as I frequently pull up my MBP while watching TV this would make managing everything easier.

Need AV1 support to allow Netflix to pay HDR10 plus when paired with Samsung TV. Also it will be good can finally get BBC 4k on Apple TV too.

I bought my first Some TV in 2010, my brother came over to Germany to visit, once I had bought a house here with my German wife and it was great for showing the photos.

Bought a new one in 2022, in the time between, I had a couple of FireTV, but they were just cheap in comparison.

Newer chip is most likely to be present along with faster WiFi connectivity. About the price, not sure whether Apple will go for a $99 price tag.

Holding off buying a new ATV until this one is released ... currently have one in the living room which will be relegated to my living room which currently has a very slow fire stick..

I’ve still seen no reference to supporting HiRez audio. It’s absolutely insane that the AppleTV still can’t output 24/192 stereo and surround sound. This is a device that people hook up to their home theaters and HiFi audio rigs. Come on, Apple. Please!!!!
Agree with you there. They need it to pass uncompressed high resolution audio out of the HDMI port for Apple Music at the minimum. Apple's so-called Lossless audio is really just high volume levels and lacks details. I'm using Tidal on two different music streamers and can tell the difference.

If they wanted to put an M1 or M2 in it, then they could have a nice little games console on their hands.

True, the technological capabilities for a good games console are easily on hand for Apple.

The bigger problem seems to be the organizational refusal to commit to more serious gaming in any meaningful way, which is why we've seen Apple tinker around the edges (offering games on AppleTV, adding controller support, etc)
but never had the courage or ambition to commit to creating one.

I’m fine with new versions; but reading this news made me think I’m not at all sure what ATV CAN do that would be anything but incremental. What fundamental changes are imaginable?

Maybe something more socially aligned, to cater to partners and families who want to have a movie night? Including remote family members. Something like send an Apple Invite and everyone can join the TV from their devices and we can show and share and vote on what we think we should watch? Multiple cursors on the TV as we playfully pin and vote suggestions? But a bit weird maybe?

Or… a really amazing camera or 3D setup to let me FaceTime with someone as if they were right behind the glass of the TV perhaps..? Again, maybe too weird, I’m just trying to imagine what could be a non-incremental step forward…

Multiple activities / split screen stuff, so I can watch sports or whatever while child watches his show?

I’m not sure the world needs any of this and it’s possible the TV experience is just mature and settled and innovation is over. I just can’t help wonder what Apple could do to really break the mold, if they wanted to.

As someone still on the Apple TV HD but who just bought a 77" 4K OLED TV, buying a 2022 version in 2025 (at full price) doesn't seem all that enticing.

Hence, I predict I will buy the new AppleTV on day one.

I'll never figure out why they won't simply let us store our media on the Apple TV device.

My Apple TV isn't on our primary tv anymore, but I've never had it out and visible. It's always been behind the tv or tucked away in a closed cabinet on the tv stand.

Even if it wasn't, I'd probably keep the lens covered. I have no need on interest in a camera in our den.

I just updated my non-4K version (pre-2017) for the latest. The interface is more responsive, and the remote is much better.

It will have AV1 support assuming they update the chip to the A17 or newer which they surely will.

I don’t use an Apple TV anymore, or any external streaming device for that matter, because I can’t stand having multiple remotes. As for smart TV telemetry, a Pi-hole takes care of most of this, while also blocking any ads.

I had the same thought when Apple TV first released. Then I quickly realized that to download everything I’ve purchased in the store formerly known as iTunes, it would require terabytes of storage. If you’re talking only enough storage to download a movie, that might help people with unreliable connections. What benefit were you thinking?

Would be nice if it supported Auracast, but Apple has yet to jump on that bandwagon even though some of their hardware can support it.

Hi-Res audio support + some sort of non-HDMI digital audio out (USB, optical, coaxial ... don't care!) would make this an instant buy for me. Heck, I'd buy three! Wild that Apple hasn't made an audio streaming puck yet.

I’ll more than likely upgrade my AppleTV 4K when this releases or a few months later. I haven’t had any issues with the ATV that I currently have.
