We all know Apple is working on a New Apple TV. They are heavy into talks for content, because truly, nobody right now is leading the field with streaming boxes. All the bells and whistles mean nothing without content. And if Apple ( or anybody else) wants that content, they are going to have to negotiate hard and smart. A new ATV with just UI updates and app store just won't cut it.

For all the talk about cord cutting trends, people are really just changing one way to get content for another. And mostly they will still need a cord to get most of the content that is not OTA.

I believe that a new ATV is coming because, if you noticed, they really just breezed over HomeKit today. They gave no in depth review of how it works. And as been pointed out the ATV was updated to support HomeKit. Something to look forward to come this fall when new hardware is usually revealed.

I disagree with this part of it. While content is great, the ability to have an app store and add apps to your device to me is huge and opens up a quite a bit of content that is currently not on the device.

While content is nice, delaying a box that already has plenty of content, and a box that can be easily updated by Apple on the fly, seems rather back words thinking.

Yeah, this is really starting to get sad. The current interface is deplorable. After 7 years or whatever it's been, it needs to stop being a "hobby." Either make it work right, or s***can it altogether.

I WANT CENTRAL SEARCH!
Is that so much to ask?

I'm in a position now where I feel like I have to wait for them to release whatever they're going to release. I know if I go and buy a Roku, Apple will come out with something in three months (or whatever) that blows it away, and I'll be kicking myself. But, I feel like I've been saying that and making excuses for Apple for a year or more now. If I didn't have so much Apple DRM content that will only play through the ATV, the decision would be much easier.

When has Apple released a device and then add major features later?
That's would be them giving you the carriage and then the horse later.

The current ATV is doing quite well vs its competition considering it is a hobby.

To overtake the market, a new ATV will need to hit the ground running. With innovative UI and great content.

I didn't mention hardware, I commented on your content remark. You don't need the content at this point, you have the content and you have some deals. A new interface and the ability to install apps. Heck you could do this on a JB ATV2....... I am thinking the major feature you are referring to would be the channels?

Right now, ATV is behind in almost every aspect, not all most. Between Roku, Amazon, and Chromecast the ATV looks dated.

You can release new hardware, release an API kit, release an updated GUI, and add the channels later as the deals come on.

Unfortunately I don't think a new UI can run on the current Apple TV. It currently doesn't have apps, that's why Apple can add channels without using up memory. Apps like on other iOS devices will require new hardware. And Apple will not release new hardware without content in place.

Given the current chip set and the fact the second gen when JB can run a new UI, the third generation is more than capable of handling a new user interface (without going crazy of course). The memory might be the issue as I don't know how much, if any is available to use outside of what the OS is running. I would assume there is probably four to eight gigs of space. Assuming of course. If that is the case, yeah, we are probably going to get a new ATV with say 16 gigs or so of memory available for apps.

Also tired of waiting, I am just going to get a Roku player instead!

What exactly are you hoping the Roku player does more/better than the current ATV3 ?
Both playback 1080p well. Maybe you're just tired of the UI and want something different.

When 4K takes off (if it does), you'll see a new Apple TV.

it will let me pick and choose my apps, faster hardware... and more features

All the added features being talked about are cool and I most likely would use some of them BUT, what I truly want is an app store that allows PLEX (like Roku) which will streamline the current process that requires having to add in Plexconnect and a profile to the aTV3. And while I'm at it, for goodness sakes please have the aTV4 support DTS via hdmi.

Here's how it breaks down for me (as an owner of Roku 3 and ATV 3):

Roku advantages:
Extensive app store and some very cool private chanels
Auto-bookmarking - start where you left off for almost every app
Headphone jack in the remote (huge for nighttime watchers with sleeping family members)
Cross-app voice search
User Interface - not great, but better than ATV
Media playback options (local media, DLNA, cast support, etc.)

ATV advantages:
AirPlay support

Results may vary:
ATV uses a different content delivery network, so streaming quality could be better or worse depending on your internet provider and their peering agreements.

I really could care less about any new AppleTV hardware at this point.... But I really wish that they would redesigned the user interface and make a much nicer remote app for the iOS devices. I would like to see in App Store and their TV service.

Said it before but, central search. I'm tired of the "Does iTunes store have it? No? Okay, let's try Netflix. Does Netflix doesn't have it? No? Let's try Hulu. Hulu doesn't have it?" B.S. I want to be able to just do one search.

Additionally, I'm paying for an Amazon Prime membership that I currently can't utilize through my Apple TV. I don't believe for a second that it's not possible; Amazon has their own player but there are half a dozen other players that are compatible with Amazon Prime, so it's not like they won't license it to others. If Apple and Amazon would just suck it up and work out licensing, Prime could be on the ATV. The *only* thing keeping me on an Apple TV is my DRM content, and I'm slowly leaning towards giving that up for the sake of having a better device.

I got an Apple TV when they reduced the price to $69. Wasn't expecting much out of it but i'm in love with the thing. Don't know if Siri, App store, new remote, etc will get me to upgrade. Mine does everything I could want it to do. Don't see myself using TV apps but i've been wrong before.

What? leading the field? It can't play of an attached HDD, It is limited to the content on it. For those outside the US its a paperweight.

Look at the colorful WWDC logo, that is everywhere. The center of the image, is an AppleTV. They almost have to have something.

wwdc_2015_roundup.jpg

Yeah, I thought it was an Apple TV as well. Maybe it was supposed to be or could've been. But guess what it was? The shape of an iOS app icon. The round ones are the shape of watchOS icons. Technically it's also the shape of the Mac mini and Airport Extreme Base Station and Time Capsule. So we basically got an ink blot test.

I agree with you completely. Especially on Central Search. In case you are not considering it, you can use the Amazon App on your iPad or iPad and AirPlay to the ATV. Amazon did a great job of the AirPlay Integration. It is the best I have seen. But I would prefer a native App.

Not on Netflix it does not and if anyone says so they are full of it. I checked the IP address of Netflix then I tried the PS4 and Fire TV Stick and it was the same exact IP address.

I had streaming issues last night on Netflix and the Apple TV actually performed the worse it took forever to get to HD then it would drop down to SD or LD.

I thought that too, and with the rumours, and its a develeoper conference (AT app store) I was pleased. But nothing. Maybe Apple are looking at new content being on the ATV and not any features such as App Store, etc. So will stay largely a paperweight for non Americans

I think Apple is working on the TV service similar to Sling TV and would announce new hardware at the same time. If the TV service is to be a selli point for new hardware, releasing the hardware first would be quite dumb. I like the units I have now, but there is obvious room for improvement. Engineers working on the watch might have also been freed up recently to help on the TV box. Jony Ive can only make so many things unapologetically thin aluminium.

It probably depends on your provider. For me, Fire TV and Roku are always about the same, and ATV is different. There's a Netflix video that you shows you bitrate and resolution in real time, so it's pretty easy to measure and compare.

For me, the costs of streaming players is reasonable. I have AppleTV and Amazon Fire TV, using the one that has the content I want to watch. Example, HBO Now use AppleTV. Obviously I would prefer AppleTV to have the apps I require thus only one device. Maybe some day.
