If Apple had any sense, they'd bring the following (IMO):
  • HDMI-in for cable box overlay/control (like the Xbox One)
  • Voice control via Siri
  • Built-in camera for FaceTime
  • Profiles for different users (like the Xbox One)
  • Expansive App Store (//give me a Plex app!)
  • Decently large SSD* for app storage
  • A tad bit more advanced of a remote (yet still simplistic and small)
  • Still $99
  • 802.11ac
  • Bluetooth 4.0 support for wireless stereo earphone support! (//not too necessary, I suppose)

Hurry up with it. Sold my Apple TV 2 for $250 on eBay (idiots will pay a handsome sum because it can be jailbroken) and was going to buy an Apple TV 3 but might be worth waiting. Though the next Apple event isn't until June and even then I could see them just announcing it and waiting for a release further out. Might not be worth waiting at this point.

Yep! Add support for all of the different video codecs and include a USB 3.0 port and I guarantee they would close to double thier market share. Unfortunately, they just seem completely unwilling to go there.

And why would they? H.264/AAC have won - they are the industry standard within and outside of Apple's ecosystem. Not even MacOS supports "other" codecs / formats out-of-the-box. They are completely unnecessary.

That's a reasonable list, and I suspect they will get there for most of these.. Except perhaps HDMI-cable-box-anything and hard drive (ATV will continue to come with small internal flash to support apps, as it does already).

Bring it on, have a tv crying out for one been holding off until new version is released. Big fan of Apple TV and have three. Used for iTunes purchases and Air play. Don't think much of the other channels apart from sometimes I use it for a Sky News. That's the biggest issue of all, content.:)

CableCard.
Every cable company has to offer them and their internal boxes have to run off them.
If Apple decided to go that rout the cable companies would have no choice.

However, it would make more sense to simply stream content like channel apps do on other iOS devices.

From Comcast :

If you use a CableCARD device instead of a Comcast cable box, you’ll receive one-way digital cable channels but not our interactive guide, pay per view events or On Demand programming.

If you think customers are going to drop watching PPV or On Demand I have a bridge for sale.

;)

how did they come to this conclusion? nothing in this article points to something completely new rather than a new iteration of the existing ATV box.

Version 3,1 to version 3,2 was a minor update. The fact that this one is labeled as 4,1 is enough to assume that this update will be more monumental than the last.

There is no way new Apple TV is going to include a Cable TV tuner. Apple is not the kind of company that goes back in time for features.

The only way I could see this being true is if they had a "passthrough" feature like on the Xbox One.

Chinese website WeiPhone.com is claiming that a new Apple TV will be announced alongside a Mac mini refresh in March. I posted about this earlier today in a thread on the Mac mini forum - that post also includes a Google translation of the article - but thought it would also be appreciated by those interested in this latest news.

Could be not sure if a new Mac mini would be worthy of talking about at an event?

As i see it, there's a few things:

- iOS 7 in the car
- New Apple TV
- new Mac mini

time warner you can already stream on demand via PC and apps. no reason they can't do this via a new apple TV

If you use Beamer it does all the conversions for you on the fly.
That means, AIUI, having to go to a Mac and manually open the video file with the application. Fsck that. My EOL'd Boxee Box mounts my filesystems over the net and plays via remote. Since ATV will never add such a feature that avoids $treaming rented content, Apple won't get me as a customer for one. Were my BB to smoke today, I'd look at a WDTV.

Oh noes! :( Too much crap I'd have to buy. :D

But H.265 is here. I hope that is supported, along with HDMI 2.0 so that it is future proofed (Airplay mirroring of Retina Macs being one potential use for full 4K support, which would hopefully be supported alongside this).

But an App Store is the biggest thing I'd like to see from an Apple TV.

Apple like making profit on their hardware, no way they could sell all that for $99

I hope this will also allow Charter Communications customers access HBO Go on Apple TV finally. One thing I worry about is will Charter block Apple TV from using cable tuner you know how Charter is.

Yeah, they are blocking Watch Disney, ABC, etc on their internet (I am speculating) if you don't have them for TV. Only from the Apple TV, though.

The reason I say it is them? I can not get past the "Accessing Disney Channel" when connected to my home internet (Charter). Turn my iPhone into a hotspot? Works like a charm.

honestly, I would like a USB port on it to plug in my hard drive with a mass collection of movies. Yeah, I already use airplay and my MacBooks hdmi port, but it would be nicer and easier to use the Apple TV as my hub.

I bought an older Core2Duo Mac mini server, threw a 12TB RAID array onto it, ripped all of my DVDs and CDs and it now acts as a iTunes Server to 2 Apple TVs , my laptops, iPad. etc etc etc etc.
There server with OSX 10.6 server also acts as a print, DNS, DHCP server as well as a "Mobile Homes" server so my laptops are always backed up.

Apple has so much dang money, they need to start "creating" their own original content for the ATV! They could create Apple's own Food Channel app to go on the AppleTV, along with its own Travel Channel App, et.....

Heck, they should have been the ones to spring first and make their own movie about Steve Jobs. They could easily create their own movie channel app, hiring actors, producers, directors, etc, and start coming out with their own Apple produced movies, all for the AppleTV owners. Screw HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, Starz, etc.... Come on Apple, learn to be more proactive when it comes to competing for video content!

sorry but you have no idea what sort of company apple is -- they arent in the business of making network television or feature films. they are a hardware company. they build only those products which are their core business (home & personal computing devices) and help sell more hardware.

being successful is being able to say "No" to ideas, even if they seem like good ones.

Siri - no, the ATV sits too far away from users (In general) for this to work
Built in Camera - use an iPad
Profiles - Use a Mac
SSD - not going to happen there is enough flash
Remote - I use my iPhone/iPad/iPod
802.11ac - as a streaming device 802.11n is fine
Bluetooth - maybe

What I want is multi depth folders so where I have a multi-series TV is shows as
Star Trek -> Season 1 ->
Season 2
Season 3
Star Trek DS9 -> Season 1
Season 2

etc as opposed to the current system of
Star Trek Season 1
Star Trek Season 2
Star Trek Season 3
....
Star Trek DS9 Season 1
Star Trek DS9 Season 2
Star Trek DS9 Season 3
...

Currently if you have 10 TV series with 7 seasons you have 70 items to scroll through , add another 7 TV series and you get 140 items to scroll through. The issue is NOT with iTunes , it is with IOS which does not nest folders.

As a guess I would presume ATVs first layer of
Music
Movies
TV... etc can be considered a "screen" on IOS and then each "season" being a "folder" under IOS that contains the episodes.

Fix that and you make the ATV much more friendly.

It never ceases to amaze me how so many people miss the point of the Apple TV. Purely & simply it is designed to be used to handle iTunes stuff plus the extra 'channels' on the interface. If you want to do something outside that go buy a Roku or something similar. I have two just now - gen 3 feeding iTunes video to my TV & hen 2 streaming iTunes music to my hifi system.
In the UK we don't get much else useful besides Netflix but it is more than enough to justify the (very low) price and I will buy the new one whatever the update is.

How many normal households use PPV or OnDemand? I think Ive used them once or twice. I dont think people care about those features compared to having a better interface. They would still get access to Netflix and other apps.

My ATV "mounts" my Mac Mini and plays all the content I have in iTunes though iTunes Sharing , it has a 12TB RAID on it and I have ripped all of my CDs/DVDs onto it.

I often go into a 2nd hand shops and buy DVDs for $2-$3 to keep adding more content.
