But no remote app, no quick controls on your iPhone for what you’re watching and volume control for your receiver if you have one. No airplay and screen mirroring for apple devices. Why is it better?
It's not. I have a RokuTV and, while the UI is the best of the non-tvOS ones, it's in no way better. Not to mention that there is a giant ad on the home screen that takes up 3rd of the screen (if you're using a network adblocker it's a 3rd dead space). Nothing is better than tvOS for UI, features, speed, and in general, niceness to use.

I wasn’t getting the 2021 version, and this is my only option. It’s super ok.

BUT I have no need for ANYTHING remotely more than 32GB in this type of device….and they are stingy with memory in their phones? But on the TV they are practically throwing it at you?

And yes to USB-C….shame with the, you know, iPhone 14 and all….

At this point, it could simply be that it's cheaper for Apple to throw a 64gb SSD into the Apple TV (economies of scale, given how many of their products also sport 64gb base storage) rather than hold on to a small supply of 32gb chips.

The new Apple TV 4K with the A15 Bionic chip introduced today features a fanless design, resulting in the device being over 10% thinner and weighing around 50% less than the previous-generation Apple TV 4K.

Apple's tech specs indicate the new Apple TV 4K is 1.2 inches tall, compared to 1.4 inches for the previous model. The new Apple TV weighs between 208 and 214 grams depending on whether you purchase the Wi-Fi-only model or the Ethernet model, whereas the previous model is significantly heavier at 425 grams.

"The efficiency gains of A15 Bionic eliminate the need for an internal fan, resulting in a more compact design and contributing to a 25 percent reduction in carbon footprint over the previous generation," said Apple, in a press release announcing the device. The previous Apple TV 4K is equipped with a metal fan for active cooling purposes.

The new Apple TV 4K is available to order beginning today and launches Friday, November 4 in the U.S. and more than 30 other countries, with starting pricing lowered to $129. Key new features include the A15 Bionic chip, HDR10+ support, up to 128GB of storage, and an updated Siri Remote with a USB-C port for charging.

While everyone is making fun of the fan (or the lack of in the new version), I want to go one more step. Why Apple TV? to hook to a TV? Well now I have to explain to my middle school kids a TV is short for a Television! And they almost don't watch any TV! My last TV set is about 10 years old now and seriously collecting dust. I have 3 iMac 27 sitting in individual rooms and they are half of how everyone enjoys their own entertainment ! The rest half is everyone has their own iPads, or straightout iPhones. TV? it is irrelevant , leave along Apple TV. Sorry Apple, I love you (I showed in this paragraph already, did I!)

Are they seriously going to paywall HDR10+ to this device? There is zero reason why the current model cannot do it.

I wouldn't hold your breath, considering Apple still hasn't delivered live TV HDR on the 2021 device, despite it being in the press release. The chance they sneak in something after they announce it as a HW upgrade has to be near zero.

The price drop is not due to saving costs, but to the demand….
In my mind, the price drop is most likely a move to get the device into more peoples hands so that Apple can pull in more revenue (ie movies, apps, etc…). Can’t imagine the component price reductions correlate with the drop in price. But yeah, I’m sure they want to strip out as much cost (ie fan) as possible to help with margin.

Haha yeah the weight, we need to save the earth by not making the AppleTV so darned heavy! The current model could affect the earth’s orbit.
Save the earth? Our little earth…for how ever long it’s been here (billions of yrs maybe) has gone through earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics, continental drifts, solar flares, sun spots, bombardment by meteors, comets, astroids….world wide floods, tidal waves, world wide fires, recurring ice ages, and somehow a couple of hundred grams from an Apple TV is finally gonna do her in? 😊

Fan?! Since when did Apple TV have a fan? I don't think I've ever seen/heard a fan on an Apple TV.

On the other hand, the greater performance a fan provides is actually worth something.

A fan is a moving part which can cause dust to be ingested into the device, can be noisy, and can itself have reliability issues, potentially reducing the long-term reliability of the device. Whenever it's possible to meet performance and thermal requirements without a fan, fanless devices are always preferable.

From what I've read, it's the 5-core GPU version, the better one.
This would be really awesome honestly. The A12 processor in the Apple TV 4K 2nd-gen (2021) model had 0% GPU upgrade over the A10X in the Apple TV 4K 1st-gen. It would be nice to have a really decent increase this time.

Did you read it on Apple.com or heard it in the keynote ? I'm curious to know what your source is.

On another note, the remote doesn't seem to have Find My though. This is a bummer. I lost it in or under the sofa all the time.

Is there any use buying this if you:

A) Already have an Apple TV HD? and;
B) Don’t have a 4k TV (but have plans to get one eventually)?

I only use it to watch shows on Netflix or Amazon Prime. I don’t play music on it much, nor do I game on it. I think that’s because I know that trying to do so will be painful given the old A8 (?) chip in it. If I had more performance behind it I might be tempted to do more with it.
Things change quickly but I know that recently Netflix charged extra for 4K broadcasts. I don’t know if they still do.

I’ve seen Apple state that there is no need for a “Find My” as the remote is thicker and wider than the old one so the possibility that it could be lost or fall between gaps in furniture is totally and in every way inconceivable.

Weighing less is actually a downgrade in a stationary device that has cables coming out of it (which can pull on it).
👍

The sign of quality kit, as the British like to say, is heft.

But my guess is that Apple was surprised that people wanted to travel with their ATV and are now finally taking that into account. They only recently added support for hotel wifi systems as well.

Is anyone else amazed to hear that the Apple TV they already own has a fan? I am, if it's spun up here then it's the quietest fan ever because I've never been aware of it.

50% less weight is a very important feature for a device that is 100% of its lifetime sitting on a sideboard, totally worth to mention it prominently on the headline.
This device is also used as a wireless presentation solution for what it's worth. The size is probably more important than the weight when throwing it in a bag, though.

So console quality chip but no console quality games. You'd think at this point Apple would allow A15 games on Apple TV or Apple Arcade.

What's the reason for USB C other than "just because"?
