HDR10+ is the very definition of an also ran. There area handful of 4K discs with it, and I think Amazon verified briefly tried it a few years back. But that's it. Dolby won the battle a long time ago.
If you have Samsung TV's, Samsung being the largest TV vendor on the planet, they only support HDR10+ and not Dolby Vision. If you like Samsung TV's, this is a decent choice.

Who cares!! I haven’t touched my Apple TV since I installed it. Heck, I haven’t even seen it where I have it placed.

Wondering if it has the SoC of the iPhone 13 or 13 Pro... they're not clear on this aspect

I hoping, and waiting for bitstream pass-through, on the 2021 model. It’s not clear if the 2022 model has this activated.

also here is a 2010 2nd gen, and the current model(s) 1080, 4k, and 4k gen2. Notice the cutouts for the fan.

I’m happy to no longer have a fan [point of failure], but I’ve never heard the fan ever, even playing mpeg2 or h.265

So did anybody else notice that there’s no USB-C cable in the box?
Does it really matter? Everyone has at least one laying around the house and you only need to charge the remote for 10 min every few months. Personally, I never use the apple cables included unless they’re braided, just leave them in the box for when I ultimately resell on ebay.

I really dont understand why an A12 needs active cooling anyways. Seems like overkill.

The new Apple TV is still bigger than the version that came before by about 1/2 inch. Not sure if anyone remembers those old ones that were before HD was a thing.

gen1 was a full blown computer w/ fan
gen2, gen3, and gen3 rev1 are the smallest fan-less
gen 4 (1080) —> all the largest containers/cases w/fan
gen5 2022 fanless again

personally, I’m glad they didn’t go usb-stick

Is there any use buying this if you:

A) Already have an Apple TV HD? and;
B) Don’t have a 4k TV (but have plans to get one eventually)?

I only use it to watch shows on Netflix or Amazon Prime. I don’t play music on it much, nor do I game on it. I think that’s because I know that trying to do so will be painful given the old A8 (?) chip in it. If I had more performance behind it I might be tempted to do more with it.
I mean no unless you want 4K. So if you plan on getting a new tv then yes.

That's still very concerning for lots of types of installations. It's great that the A15 is efficient enough to not need a fan, but what about when the Apple TV is installed behind a TV or in a cabinet or any of the myriad of ways people normally hook this up where ventilation is low?

I stored my 4K (1st gen) on the vesa rack behind the TV in 90 degree weather. Not a problem.

I was with Apple TV for years and I loved it. Last year I switched to Roku and love it more. It has a better remote and UI IMO. Plus I can still download the Apple TV+ app.
But no remote app, no quick controls on your iPhone for what you’re watching and volume control for your receiver if you have one. No airplay and screen mirroring for apple devices. Why is it better?

When do people think Apple will do an 8K ATV box, then?

And yes, I know content is thin on the ground, and that it's 4x 4K is a big data jump, but there is stuff slowly dripping out, so I'm just wondering when it's likely to be a thing.

I don't see this as an improvement. Weight and height are mostly irrelevant in a stationary device. On the other hand, the greater performance a fan provides is actually worth something. Maybe Apple is planning a Apple TV Gaming edition and doesn't want their standard model encroaching on performance.

(Though since an Apple TV Console would use M series chips, I wouldn't think the standard model would compete with it anyway.)
I doubt that is coming anytime soon. This might be the first AppleTV that keeps up with other iOS devices and should be great for mobile games. I’d expect even better Steam Link support. The previous Apple TV 4K was already considered the best Steam Link box you can buy with really low latency.

This might clear up some confusion. From Apple’s website:

“This sleek fanless design requires no batteries, is completely keyless, and utilizes no wind up crank as it runs completely from an electrical current straight from your wall. The new model’s exterior comes in jet black and can be operated without prewashing.”
