New Apple TV Rumored to Launch Next Year With These Features

Here's my "wish list" for the next ATV.

1) Improve the interface, make it more welcoming, more information shown
2) Continue to improve on video quality, including upscaling
3) Push the RAM to 8GB
4) Add WiFi 7
5) Allow for on-screen signal and bitrate information
6) Put an AI capable processor into it even if current TV OS isn't going to immediately get AI.
7) Kill the gimmicky remote and to a more traditional looking remote

What is with Apple's resistance to supporting WiFi 7, except on iPhone?! With WiFi 7 routers down to $99, it has gone fully mainstream, while Apple remains stuck on 6E, which is little more than an asterisk among wifi standards, a half-step between 6 and 7. (Quick, show of hands if you invested in a 6E router. Anyone??) For devices you're going to keep for several years or longer, it makes no sense to buy or upgrade to a new one that's already a generation behind in its wifi standard.

Why is there an expectation that the Apple TV should be updated regularly? Its primary purpose is streaming media, and it streams 4K at high quality, with zero interface lag.

Good list. I have found that ATV is already best-in-class among streaming boxes when it comes to video and audio quality, but "even better" is always welcome. I have to reluctantly agree about the remote--aesthetically, I like it, but functionally I continue to curse it on a regular basis. But it's an improvement over the even-more-gimmicky 1st gen remote! Not sure what you would improve about the interface beyond the current tiled display of app icons. What would be "more welcoming?" I think "more information" beyond the icons would only clutter it up. And once you click on an icon to open it, the information you see is determined by the app, not Apple.

I do think it remains confusing that the "Apple TV" app is NOT Apple's streaming service, Apple TV+ ... the latter is just a tab under the former, which mainly attempts to serve as a headquarters for all of your viewing on the various streaming services. BUT... it can only do that to the extent that the other services cooperate with Apple and not all of them do, so some of your viewing is there, but not all of it.

Would prefer all the investment goes into improving tvOS, to improve the UX, reliability, better sandboxing of apps like YouTube that crash the whole system often, better airplay support to remember settings, etc.
One thing that really irritates me about YouTube is the volume settings are inconsistent relative to the rest of the apps. Most everything on tvOS is relatively consistent for volume, but it's often way out of way for YouTube. Is this an Apple problem, or a Google problem, or a bit of both? I'm thinking it's mainly a Google problem.

I have a 32 GB 4K 1st gen and regretted getting just 32 GB.
Did you run out of space for apps?

I have a 32GB and never had a problem with space before, but just today I was in the middle of watching a movie streaming from my Mac via Home Share and it stopped and a notification popped up saying that I was out of space. I don’t remember the last time I downloaded a new app to my ATV so I have no idea why I ran out of space today all of a sudden. Maybe it was a bug…

That's the fifth roll out/rolls out/rolling out/rolled out on one page. Released etc. is always a safe option. Not a huge deal; just something that becomes obvious when we actually read each article.

Yes, I ran out of space with 32 GB, and had to manually manage the storage. With 128 GB, I don't have to manually mange that space. It seems tvOS is more comfortable self-managing storage when there is a lot of storage available.

I don't even have that many apps installed, but I did allow tvOS to download those hi-res 4K screensavers. I think each of those alone is around 1 GB.

tvOS is where the improvement needs to happen, not the hardware.
It's not mutually exclusive.

I've got a 1st Gen 4K and the previous HD models, so I'll probably grab a couple new ones to refresh them.

Not a fan of the idea of an integrated camera, though. I keep my ATV boxes on shelves below my TVs, kinda out of the way and somewhat obscured.

What I would rather see Apple do is update the annoying UI and make it less cumbersome to use, especially when text needs to be input.

Wouldn't be surprised if the M1, M2 or M3 makes an appearance in the top model, then you the A-series Bionic and Pro for the other two models.

I think both really. Software demands will always increase so improving the hardware is important also.

Nobody cares about gaming on the Apple TV, so again, its primary task is to stream, which it does great. 8K isn't on the horizon anytime soon (most people can't even notice the increased quality of 4K, especially with bitrate starved streaming), so there's nothing software intensive that should require new hardware every year or two on the CPU side. They need to work on making tvOS better.

I’d want to at least be able to fully download Apple TV content, for high quality viewing even with a dodgy / slow internet connection. Just like you can on a iPhone or iPad.

As for the camera, no idea what Apple would do with it, but there are some pretty intrusive applications, e.g. monitoring who is watching which TV content or ads (and how attentatively they are watching), also the idea of charging for pay-per-view according to how many people are watching.

Honestly if they are thinking of adding a camera to the AppleTV then what they should do is make it something like a webcam that will mount to the top middle portion of the TV and somehow friction mount or 3M mount.

No mention of Apple Intelligence support for Siri in the  TV? It is a HomeKit hub. It should get upgraded Siri support.
They need to have some limited browser interface to allow an improved tvOS SIRI to receive detailed information on content, as well as finding content across multiple streaming VoD hosts. It might be a bit too much of a step for an improved SIRI that can understand increased wordage, but we all would be happy to see this advance on the ATV4K IMHO. The biggest PITA is also the third party app interfaces against suggesting similar content based on what you watched, really no comparison to what you see on desktop web access to various quality VoD host web site navigation. Thank goodness the ATV4K allows Airplay 2 to work around these problems.
