Won't happen any time soon
  • Apple TV works with all the major console controllers and the excellent 3rd party (e.g. 8bitdo) controllers
  • Even if Apple includes an A19 chip
    • It will still likely struggle to produce acceptible AAA game image quality and frame rate/times on a 4k display
    • The flash storage would likely be mostly filled up by 1 AAA game
  • If Apple bumped the specs to an M4 chip & 256 GB storage - that's called a Mac Mini and costs $599
It would make for an excellent retro console system emulator, and there's a not-small market for that.

I’ll believe it when I see it! Same promise happens every year and nothing ever is announced. Been waiting 3 yrs for new Apple TV.. ⏳😅

Will we finally get to deliver HiRez audio (24/192) via HDMI to an external DAC or a home theater receiver/procesdor?

Crazy that there is still no way to do this from an existing Apple device short of directly connecting a Mac to your receiver

I think the new Apple TV will use the A18 SoC with 8 GB of RAM, up to 256 GB of local storage, and Apple's new WiFi chip so it supports wiFi 7 (802.11be), along with a new RJ-45 Ethernet connector with support for above 1 gigabit connections from a fiber modem or DOCSIS 4.0 cable modem.
I also think the A18 will be cpu of choice - mainly in the event that Apple reuse the existing fanless case as the A17 pro supposedly runs hotter.

Using their own WiFi chip will reduce costs for Apple.

Not accurate enough for me. Using Find My to find the remote, it will just tell me the remote is “near” when I’m in the vague vicinity of the sofa and doesn’t really help me narrow it down beyond one side of the living room.

Using Find My to find the AirTag attached to the remote? It will tell me precisely how close it is and failing that, can even make sound to help me locate it.

I mean, you’re not wrong but I’ve yet to not be able to find it fairly quickly with its nearby, oh you’re really close, accuracy. Doesn’t need to be pinpoint, I’ve found.

I always kind of scratch my head on how people lose remotes so much. I always place it on the coffee table for the TV in my family room and on a table for the TV in my workout room. I can't think of the last time I misplaced a remote.

Unfortunately my wife and son discard the remote with such reckless abandon the instant they are done with it, and my wife keeps enough cushions and blankets on the sofa to furnish a small hotel that looking for the remote without an airtag is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

Please….and update the movie audio files to their original format as applicable…

Atoms has done its job, but about 50% of the movies out there from the last 30 years were originally done in DTS.

One or two strangely negative comments on here. The Apple TV4K is my favourite Apple device (and I am deep into the ecosystem) It is a superb STB/Media Player and has revolutionised TV watching and music listening in this house and never with any problems. One thing it is not is 'unreliable'. I doubt there could be a more solid bit of home tech. Having said that, whether just a spec bump or not, I will not upgrading my Apple TV's because I fail to see the advantages at this stage. But for anyone new to the market...go for it.

Will be a minor update with a new chip and faster WiFi. Pricing should also remain the same. Apple might sell the current version for a slightly lower price.

What you described is not normal. I have never had those kinds of problems.

You might have this kind of problem if you have a major electrical fault in your house. A few years ago, we had a burnt out neutral supply on our street pole. It was a lovely sight in the middle of the night, with plenty of sparks lighting up the street.

In the aftermath, my Apple TV was really crashy and needed to be replaced. Likewise, a Nest smoke alarm.

I can’t blame Apple for any of that, though.

Any plans for it to support more than 2 Bluetooth connections, one of which is the remote? Would be great if could support more, as a normal Apple device does.

More picture in picture options would be nice too.

I use it extensively for a virtual cycling app called Zwift that these features would really improve the experience.

It would make for an excellent retro console system emulator, and there's a not-small market for that.

...and a not-small amount of existing competition - including the ultra-cheap Raspberry Pi and several "mini" look-alike reproductions of classic consoles and 8-bit computers. Plus a legal grey area around some of the game images that change hands that Apple probably wouldn't want to get in to.

Still, Apple have a wonderful opportunity to release a small, cheap computer and call it the Apple Pi :)

Just make the damn thing work reliably so that I don’t have to keep rebooting and or reinstalling my apps. And having to often watch pixelated and blurry images would be a real bonus. Our Roku box never needs this level of attention.

This does not sound normal. Have you tried resetting it to factory and starting over? I have had my AppleTV going since the day I bought it and have not had any of the issues you are experiencing. I know antidotal, but this doesn't sound right.

AV1 decode will be nice for advanced Plex users.

Now if only we could get audio pass through...

This is the one big thing I am waiting for!!!!

The reason for the A18 is that I expect Apple to continue iPhone 16/16 Plus production for at least one more year, and that means there will be plentiful supplies of the A18 SoC. And it helps the A18 that it will support WiFi 7 (802.11be).

Try having a cat, or having a female partner who has a reckless attitude to remotes.
Fortunately I’ve always managed to find my Apple TV remote, but the amount of times I had to replace her Fire stick TV remote is enough to weep.

As someone with a 10 yr old lcd tv that streams movies on my Mac just fine directly to my tv, and uses its apps (like Netflix and such that are built into the tv), can someone pls explain to me the purpose of the ATV (or Rokus or Shield Pros etc. for that matter)? Aren’t those devices what my existing tv already does?? 🤔
