Apple is set to introduce the next iteration of its Apple TV lineup at next week's September 9 media event, alongside the expected announcement of new iPhones, and a previously rumored feature is gaining additional traction today with a report from BuzzFeed claiming the new Apple TV will have universal search functionality, letting users search once and get hits from multiple sources, not just iTunes.

Universal search feature will reportedly be a "cornerstone" of the new Apple TV, allowing users to, for example, search for one movie across services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and iTunes, among others. The ability to search for actors and directors will also be included in the search options, and won't limit users to just movie or television show titles. The report also claims that the new Apple TV will "start" at a price point of $149, hinting that there could be more expensive models with perhaps the possibility of expanded storage capacities. The $149 retail price does line up with previous rumors that pegged the Apple TV of launching with either a $149 or $199 price tag. The company has been said to be keeping the third-generation Apple TV, currently priced at $69, as an entry-level option.

Along with Siri integration, the next-generation Apple TV is rumored to feature an A8 processor, a touch-pad remote, and an App Store with an SDK available for developers to create apps. The new box will be aimed at more than just video consumption, with recent rumors hinting that the newly designed remote control will include motion sensors to support "casual" gaming experiences.

Update 8:52 AM: According to a follow-up report by 9to5Mac, the new Apple TV's onboard storage will be in the 8-16 GB range, and the touchpad remote included with the box will be black rather than the silver seen on the current Apple TV remote.

If it doesn't have 4K support, I'm not interested. Or at least, I'll just buy the old one.

I tend to agree. However, if the new iPhones can indeed record in 4k, and you have services like YouTube who can supply it, I can see Apple using it as a "tentpole". Not that I think they'll be adding YouTube back in, but the precedent is there. It might round out their movement toward retina screens. Record 4k content on your phone, edit it on your 5k iMac, show it on your 4k capable Apple TV.

Just a thought.

Oh there will be, in two years, after apple lets you record a ton of 4K home videos. Then when a new Apple TV 5 with 4K arrives, you will want to upgrade to enjoy all those high-res home videos, even if 4K is the only new feature.

4K is not going to be relevant for years. Most 4K you get will be highly compressed, Eat through Caps that are going to be around for a long time. The 1080P netflix super HD on the Apple TV 3 looks great so for people to complain about lack of 4K is just people looking to complain about something

Yup.... that's what they call a clever sales & marketing strategy. If only I worked for Apple in that department... :)

I think the set top TV market is going to get too fragmented.

Want Prime? You'll need Amazon

Want itunes? You'll need AppleTV

Soon we'll have 10 of these little $39-$99 (soon to be +$149) boxes on top of our TVs to get everything we want.

If the rumors of an AppleTV app store is true (most likely is), then why wouldn't there be Amazon Prime Video? It's on iOS and you can also airplay it to AppleTv right now, so why wouldn't Amazon come out with an app for APV?

Not understanding this line of thinking at all.

If it doesn't have Plex support then I don't care!

App Store for AppleTv. Why wouldn't Plex make an app for AppleTV? This is Plex's call, but considering their history in putting their app everywhere, why would they stop now?

I cant imagine (but would be surprised) if ATV4 had 4k viewing, I know a lot of people who own 4k TV's but I just don't think they can justify it compared to the majority, let alone the 4k content that is out there.

Maybe I'm wrong?

I have to say I agree with you wholeheartedly......on the part that I boldfaced. If anyone is buying a 4K TV they are buying it in hopes to watch as much good 4K content as they possibly can find. What else would be the point in buying one?

Since when is thinking part of Internet forums? Mindless rambling and complaining about everything is standard

Bit of a bummer on the onboard storage size, I was hoping for alot more than 16GB max so we could have some local media storage on the beast.

Here in the U.S. we've got people like these guys (who control the largest U.S. network that's faster than DSL):

http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Comcast-Now-Charging-30-To-Avoid-Companys-Usage-Caps-134972

thinking they could be double toll collectors once you pass 300GB a month (easy when you stream video much ala AppleTV) to try and recover money as streaming destroys their TV business.

This is better at this point...if Apple did it now it'd be without HDR or one of many of the HDR standards. IMHO....an industry standard HDR (everybody has their own standards at this point) needs to get nailed down that TV's will support then Apple can move forward with 4k and HDR.

Ok, but 4K, isn't an 'innovation' that is still waiting for another company to invent. It's here, and great 4K TV's are already down below $1000. On top of that, Apple phones can already record in 4k. Their top iMac has a resolution GREATER than 4k. So your comment really doesn't apply to Apple making the ATV 4K compatible. It's borderline inexcusable that it wouldn't have that capability.

Oh, does RoKu have a 4K machine? If not then it would be considered an "innovation" if Apple is the one and only implementing that on an TV. Um, unless there was some secret firmware update my iPhone 6 Plus (currently the top of the line iPhone, does not record in 4K. Where did you get that information? Are you sure you know what you're talking about? Doesn't sound like it.

Anyone that has a laptop or PC has local media storage, I have TB of stuff, no one is putting out a box with TBs of storage. Idea is you use Local Wifi to stream from A pc. Not Roku or Amazon is releasing a box with enough local storage for people thats what Plex and Itunes are for, If that is not good enough then buy a PC and connect it to your tv. These boxes are not PC replacements

I can no longer rant.

$149 is do-able (wasn't that the original price of the AppleTV with the hard drive?).

Gotta have a nice touch-remote. $49 for an Apple-branded game controller is also do-able (those $100 BT ones don't quite cut it).

I doubt they'd make this Wii/PS/XBox controller compatible...

Maybe the $149 will be 1080p and the $199 can be 4K. Even charge $249, as folks with 4K TV's will probably spring for that. Then everyone is happy. Honestly, Apple has led on every device (phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, monitors) with higher resolution (retina, 5K etc.), so it would make sense for them to support 4K, at least on the higher end model. The device needs to be for content now and near-future, not now and near-past. Perhaps the A8 or A8x can easily handle whatever other format tweaks happen in UHD regarding HDR as long as the HDMI port is 2.0a. With universal search and 3rd party content, this device has the potential to be the "Smart' for every smart TV on the prime HDMI input of the TV, especially with a subscription service coming next year.
No need to dismiss those who want a 4K Apple TV now - 4K is already 3 generations in! :)
