If Apple TV is going to be a success, it needs to be more than a streaming box. Perhaps Apple Arcade can push the Apple TV as a gaming machine, but I'm not sure it can make a dent in the Switch/PS4/XB1 market.

I have a $35 Fire TV Stick I got for free from my employer. It runs Plex. Apple TV is a hard sell without any additional benefit.

We're just six days away from Apple's annual September event at Steve Jobs Theater, where the company is widely expected to unveil new iPhone and Apple Watch models. And now, there are hints of a new Apple TV and possibly more.

Today, the Twitter account @never_released aka Longhorn, which has a history of sharing codenames and info about upcoming Apple hardware, claimed that an Apple TV refresh is incoming. No timeframe was provided, but the tweet says the new model has an Apple TV11,1 identifier and a codename of J305.

MacRumors can confirm that both the AppleTV11,1 model identifier and the J305 codename appear within strings and plist files in an internal build of iOS 13 that was provided to us, but this does not guarantee an imminent release.

The tweet added that the new Apple TV will be powered by a faster A12 chip, which would certainly benefit the upcoming Apple Arcade gaming service. It is not entirely clear if this means an A12 or A12X chip, as the current Apple TV 4K has the same A10X Fusion chip as 2017 iPad Pro models.

Update: Longhorn has doubled down on the new Apple TV having an A12 chip, not A12X.

Rumors aside, it would be reasonable to expect a new Apple TV next week, as the device has been updated once every two years for the past three generations: a revised third-generation Apple TV in March 2013, the fourth-generation Apple TV in September 2015, and the Apple TV 4K in September 2017.

As for other potential announcements, the Twitter account CoinX today teased followers with a "one more thing" tweet, the iconic phrase used by the late Steve Jobs when unveiling one last product or surprise at Apple events.

CoinX has accurately leaked several details about upcoming Apple products, including the names of the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR before anyone else, the removal of the headphone jack on 2018 iPad Pro models, and much more. CoinX is also the source of the rumored "Pro" moniker for this year's iPhones.

What could the "one more thing" be? Possibilities include Apple's rumored Tile competitor that MacRumors shared exclusive details about last week, or perhaps just maybe an early preview of the so-called Apple Glasses. We'll soon find out.

Apple's keynote kicks off Tuesday, September 10 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.

[doublepost=1567716673][/doublepost]My problem is finding shows I watch across different services on the Apple TV. Siri helps, but it doesn't work as well as I wish it would. Maybe new hardware and updated software to go with the new hardware will improve many of the features of the Apple TV this cord cutter has come to love!

I had to replace my ATV 4k two months ago as it bricked itself on an update and was out of warranty. GRRRRRR..

My Apple TV2 got bricked during an update, froze on the "homepage". I was stuck waiting for the new one. In the meantime I Googled a fix. USB cable from the Apple TV to my iMac. iTunes brought it back to factory settings. I had to password my way into all the services again, but at least it came back from the dead.
[doublepost=1567717414][/doublepost]Okay, cray, cray idea. Do Mesh Wi-Fi in the new TV.

I would seriously consider a new Apple TV. Especially with the game platform coming. Mine is a couple iterations past. Me, I am fine with the current remote, but I won't cry if they change it.

ATV 4k has no USB connector.

Legit question: do they not have people using these things in a lab somewhere, seeing the same stuff we do?

I'm sure they do, but someone greenlit the Siri remote and we're stuck with it. It's not like past mistakes like iPod Hi-Fi, Ping and The Daily that can quietly pass into oblivion.

The Siri remote works well most of the time, but when it doesn't, it's irritating as hell. A remote shouldn't require finesse and delicate handling.

Amazon has enhanced the Fire-TV Cube with Hexa-core processing for October pre-order. A powerful Alexa brain will complicate things for Apple's struggling Siri.

How about greenlighting a mouse where the charge port is on the bottom?

It could be defective. Or when clicking maybe you're doing a slight swipe at the same time? I sometimes do that on my phone where I'm trying to swipe side to side but instead it thinks I swiped down slightly or vice versa.

I honestly don't have those issues with the ATV remote.
Definite no on swiping while clicking.

Hope they give in on their p$ssing contest with Google and enable 4K Youtube.

No joke. You guys are reading it wrong. The app is called “TV” on the “Apple TV”. Apple is referring to the new “app” on the “Apple TV” that allows you to watch all of your shows from one place. In that picture they’re referring to the “TV” app as just “app”. It’s either that or they write the statement as: “The new Apple TV TV app” If you need further proof just look at the “TV” app on your iPhone or iPad, or on the Apple TV itself when you hover over it. Beside it would be silly to call the app “Apple TV” on the Apple TV when the app is universal across other Apple devices.

They need to make this thing slimmer. It's been years and years of this design and then they actually went BIGGER for the 4k version.

I couldn’t agree more. I’ve modified a refurb ATV4 so that it could be fed with a 12V small adapter.
2 thirds of the whole device is used to accommodate for the power transformer (converting the mains 110/220V to 12V) and a huge heat sink.
Without this, the current ATV4 could fit in an Apple TV 3 casing, it would probably require some adequate cooling though.
I just didn’t have the guts to complete this project though in fear i would ruin a perfectly working ATV. The direct 12V input is operational though, throuh a small hole in the casing.

I'd love to see support for OTA and DVR (either through onboard drive or external Lightning drive). Create a solution that can be used by all three types of cord cutters (Live Streamers, On-Demand Streamers, and Over-The-Air). And if I want to watch my local channels through my HDTV antenna, allow me to DVR that on the same box I'm watching everything else. If Steve Jobs was still alive, we'd already have a solution to tie all cord cutters together.

I totally agree with adding OTA & DVR functionality. On my second AppleTV, and although I enjoy its functionality, I'm looking at Channelmaster's Stream+ because of it's OTA/DVR features. It'll be nice to streamline all viewing choices in one menu. The current Apple probably wouldn't do something like it as there's no subscription to sell that way. The old Apple probably would/could have offered it when just designing great products that combined the arts/science and made good products that did not require a subscription to be functional.

Has this been confirmed ?
[doublepost=1568027926][/doublepost]Best of both worlds would be an updated Apple TV using the current form factor, and the older model(s) refitted as smaller Apple TV sticks, using a smaller PCB and external power supply.

The odds of me selling current 4K Apple TV’s and paying another couple hundred for pic and audio that isn’t any better? Pretty low.

Guess we’ll see what Apple announces.

The amazon device is superior in every way (stated as an Apple consumer) and cheaper. The only place the AppleTV is better is being a HomeKit hub. I was blown away by what the FireTV 4K stick does for the price and I can airplay to it with an add on app
The only reason i got an apple TV was to pass through apple music to my component stereo system. I wish there was an apple app on the other devices. I rarely buy anything through the apple tv since it is only available on that device, my phone and ipad. The other TVs have Rokus.
