People need to remember that this is just a rumor. It's so funny seeing how people actually already believed that Apple is doing this and that it upsets them.

I'm going to guess that the actual product will be more subtle. Just like the Kinect cameras, it ended up being FaceID.

first app on the AR app store: hides the notch on the iPhone whenever you look at it.
Notch is a non-factor. Had the XR since July, upgraded to the Pro Max. Don’t even notice it unless I’m actively looking for it. Again, it’s a nonissue. People just like to complain to complain 🙄

I can't see myself having a use for this, and I'm afraid it's just going to drive up costs. Knowing Apple though, they'll convince me somehow that I do need it.

I've never heard one voice say that AR is useful or neat or necessary except from those pushing the technology

AR is going to be amazing. Zuckerberg is going to have a special version for himself and his inner circle that will identify everyone with facebook's facial recognition and then overlay their name, bank account balance, and social credit score.

And think about what the tech will do for law enforcement when they start paying facebook for a more limited version of that.

It should be doable with 5G speeds.

I am talking about 3D scanning. It could scan a face, right. A 3D scan. People won't like that if it is secretive.

Apple could set-up virtual locations on iCloud servers and people could have virtual meetings.
Why won’t people like it? My eyes perform 3D scans on people all the time.

Hopefully is just me, but I don’t see the advantage of AR except in video games.. I find that the Measure app is cool, but it’s not going to replace a tape measure, ruler or calipers. As someone who doesn’t play video games (occasionally play old GameCube games) I don’t see how this is going to revolutionize anything.

I don't see how AR will have anything to do with video games. I mean you'll have interesting fads like pokemon go, but those keynote demos we've seen don't look fun at all and I don't see what kind of game you'd play. Who wants to hold a huge iPad at awkward angles to get a little window into a game overlay on the real world (or use glasses to see a game overlaid on the real word). VR may have potential but so far is not living up to it for gaming either.

Wow. Why do theatres object to people scanning the show with a camera when their customers eyes scan it all the time?

Here's an idea, go to a casino, pull out your iPhone and start recording people playing at the tables -- just stuff you're allowed to freely watch with your eyes. The casino has some nice friendly staff who will show up within seconds to "explain" the issue to you. You may want to make sure you have AppleCare+ on your iPhone before you get the explaination.

On the contrary, once they get these completely worked out and streamlined, so it looks like normal glasses, but can overlay relevant/requested information "right in front of you", I totally want these.

The problem, of course, is that'll probably be 5th or 6th gen of this tech, and there's no easy shortcut to get there without doing 1st/2nd/3rd/4th gen versions first.

This will be a nightmare for the world. Even if Apple delivers a perfect product and acts with perfect respect for privacy, by the 5th or 6th generation, google/android will own 90% of the market, and google with have hundreds of millions of cameras everywhere recording everything. They'll have surveillance of public bathrooms. And good luck opting out when 20% of the people around you are wearing these cameras everywhere.

True that. I'm honestly surprised that the product I posted about even exists, but it does seem clunky and no doubt Apple's own iteration will make these obsolete.

You do understand that the primary reason that product exists is to do scans for 3D printing, right? I've used a similar product for that purpose and it's amazing. Unless Apple makes it easy to generate an STL file on your computer suitable for editing and printing, it's certianly not going to make these obsolete.

Seriously? It's obviously useful. The issue has been that it's too unwieldy so far, but once Apple or someone else makes a pair of glasses that is no bigger than ordinary glasses, it will take off like a rocket. It can do everything an apple watch can do, without you even having to raise your wrist.

Are you aware that your eyes have a minimum focusing distance? Checkmate AR glasses!

The things glasses could actually do....basically hold an FPV camera...boy would apple/ google love to get their hands on that! it could be designed so you can have a view of your actual surroundings picture in picture style, while looking down at your phone? Collision avoidance technology?

. Where is the market, growing market? .
you think everyone looks at their phone because it’s been determined that’s the best or most convenient way to view the internet?

the market is nearly everyone who looks at their phone on a regular basis.

it’s the same market as the watch.. except with the watch, it’s not very different than looking at the phone.. so the watch didn’t replace the phone because it’s only slightly more convenient (in certain cases) and shows less.

glasses will generally be far more convenient and capable of displaying more.. as well as do more.

——

in other words— you’re looking at the beginning of the end of the smartphone era.

Without the Apple Watch, it won't be able to check your heart rate ;)

You can check your pulse behind your ears... Just sayin!

Im afraid rumors like this are designed to tell us what direction Apple are going, like a totally impractical outfit at a fashion show.

And im a bit concerned in the direction they are heading. Obviously some love it, but i will pass.

Nobody wanted the iPhone... or the iPad... Apple Watch... Look where they are now?

If you want to make a list of the things Apple made that nobody wanted....shouldnt you also include the bad stuff? I bet there is more bad than good in that category!

Apple has had plenty of outright failures. And plenty of stuff we really dont want, but we put up with. I mean, butterfly keyboard? No headphone jack? Only USB C on macbooks? Touchbar? Nobody wanted this stuff, and they so dont want it that Apple is having trouble selling this stuff. Macbook prices dropped significantly, and are on sale for 1 year...

AR compensates for the minimum focus distance by shifting the focal plane. That’s why real human beings, wearing real AR and VR goggles, can actually see things.

I for one am not interested in Augmented Reality -- actual current reality is good enough for me!

Aside from that, what about the people who do not want to or cannot wear these special AR glasses for some reason? If Apple replaces the iPhone and iPad with these things, where does that leave some of their customers?

Phone is the best way to view the internet?

This is, well, it is preposterous!

I know people use their phones a lot, and maybe it is okay for facebook.. but if you want to do actual research, products or other info, a smartphone is vastly inferior. It just cant display much info.. mobile websites are the worst, severely limiting what info you can seem. you cant realistically have 20+ tabs open and keep track of them all. And inputing data is another weak point. But if you only use a phone, you may not know what you are missing?

VR goggles place the screen further from your eyes.

Physics are not on your side, considering the image included with this rumor.

it’s certainly the most popular way to access the internet. and yes, it’s the best way to internet in many many cases.. directions for an obvious one.. or, when you’re not at a computer.. ie— most of the time

Hopefully this puts a nail in the coffin for everyone still theorizing about the 2019 iPad Pro.
I don't think anything is coming the rest of this year that hasn't already been announced. No iPads, iPhones, Macs, or even any of the rumored accessories like the AirTags. Yet, there's all these production rumors and hints we're seeing in the betas about a whole slew of new stuff, but the timing makes no sense... I mean, since when does Apple ramp up mass production of new products in November/December?

I'm honestly starting to become more and more convinced that Apple might have an event after the first of the year like in January or February. You know, like back in the good old days 😏

It's not about you noticing the notch, the problem is everyone around you can see it.

The image has nothing to do with apple’s products.

There are numerous smart glasses products already on the market that superimpose text and things over regular glasses (by projecting directly into the eye). They work fine. Physics doesn’t work the way you think it does.
