These will be banned in so many places it will likely inhibit a massive take-off in use and the overall technology. Schools, medical facilities, entertainment events, in clubs and restaurants, anywhere people would feel uncomfortable being recorded. I mean I guess it'd be fair to rebuttal with 'phones can do that, too', but I just feel like this isn't the same.

Make the new iPad Pro fit the current folio cases. Otherwise, just keep it. It's getting to the point of ridiculousness in the device cost and absurd 200 dollar keyboard price point.

I don't buy a new keyboard for every laptop or iMac. The old one still works, unless you want to provide it for free with it....
I actually do share your sentiment, but people say this every year about all the devices and accessories.

would really love to be able to read a single thread here that doesn't have some post trying to bring the notch into it.
At least they finally moved on from the removal of the headphone jack after 4 years of whining about that.

I am really surprised Apple has even spent time or money on this product area. I used to work for Epson who tried to sell their useless smart glasses. No developer software, real awkward to wear, no marketing, no sales channel, nothing. Apple is a consumer product company, this and all other smart glasses are niche, very niche, specialist areas, not mass produced products. It can only be half interesting if it is £199/$230 or less. How much for the software? Won't be cheap. Can't think of one use at home, yes a few industrial uses, but like I said, niche, very niche. Everyone else has failed, can't see what Apple can bring to the table. I wish Apple spent more time and money updating their computer products. And not every 3-5 years with the same high prices.
Imagining the applications is easy. Right now Apple is testing hundreds of interesting ones. The problem is actually landing a killer app that clicks with fickle consumers. On the other hand, the Watch is a big hit. I love mine and yet there is still no killer app for it so maybe they don’t need a great use case as much as just a great overall experience for people who don’t mind wearing glasses for no particular reason.

Interesting stuff and exciting times ahead.

How about bug-free OS updates and improving Siri first.

You might not be aware that the engineers who are engaged in AR research and development at Apple are not the people who work on macOS and Siri.

Both efforts can go on at the same time.

I think one would have to buy 3-4 pairs with different styles for different occasions. And this is where Apple will probably make a killing in sales. Can you imagine someone at a suit and tie event wearing sporty Apple glasses like the ones used by cyclists? Most would never wear them. Some would give up after a few weeks of people snickering around them and giving them looks while a very small number of people will be the glasses equivalent of the socks and sandals crowd.

Apple can't go with a minimalist approach like frame-less glasses because they have to put all the hardware and the battery in the frame. Either way they will be chunky compared with normal glasses.

It's one thing to to have a device that people hold in their hand or wear on their wrist but it will be much more difficult to make something that people will put on their face.

I hope they get it right but it will be a challenge for them.

Sometimes Technology is good and sometimes it's bad. The social aspect of AR may lead us down a path that even Social Media can't... and we've all seen the horrible outcome of the effects of social media on young people and women.

In saying that, I'm sure there will be many decent and valid uses for this tech one day. Just not yet...

your old iPad still work as well, just use that set and upgrade neither

you can always donate to those kids in need of an iPad and keyboard in poor public schools.

Nobody wanted the iPhone... or the iPad... Apple Watch... Look where they are now?

And look at the zombies they have created* as we bask in the inhuman glow of LED lighting, with minds addled by information overload, socially coercing us to consume and simultaneously feed the machine with more big data to exploit our human vulnerabilities, selling us out one bit at a time to governments and stock-holders.

There should be an obvious recording signal to show people your are scanning or recording. The worst thing about glasses would be secretive scanning or recording.
You really think that (younger) people would care anymore? The very same people voluntarily giving away even the most intimate details of their lives on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Tik Tok & Co.?

So you think grown men are immune to those assumed effects? Well ...

Besides - the complaints about the youth going bad has been voiced over and over again for hundreds and hundreds of years. Yet mankind still managed to survive until this very day. I'm confident that mankind will also survive the oh-so-bad effects of Social Media and AR ... :)

What would have to change in your opinion to allow for "decent and valid uses for this tech" some day in the future? In my opinion, when the technology is ready for primetime, mankind will be as well. If necessary, it will adjust, that I'm sure of. The younger generation will embrace the new chances and the grumpy old naysayers will die out over time.

“Gaming, watching video, and virtual meetings."

Wow, so more content consumption and passive entertainment value. Certainly a bicycle for the mind.
I was thinking more BarcaLounger for the mind...☺ Jobs is spinning in his virtual grave.

Exactly this! More stupid distractions and excess of mindless entertainment in our lives. I can see a special industry that may use AR glasses tech but for the average everyday consumer? Just can’t see it.

Make the Apple Eyeglass like just one disc on the one eye with really cool shapes and colors and reflective lenses the luscious colors of cinnamon and the earth.

It’s funny how everyone keeps envisioning benevolent uses for this technology (if it ever becomes widely available) but always overlook the nefarious. Technology is inherently neutral which means there will be situations where it will be used that people don’t want to think about. One wonders how it will be hacked, the security of the information, custom applications used by oppressive regimes, scandalous uses, and the list goes on. How long until some official or agency confiscates it to evaluate what you’ve been looking at? How long until someone is jailed because they happened to use it near some “sensitive” area or as a pretense to jail someone?

It’s kind of like Newton’s third law of technology: for every good use of a technology there is an equal and opposite use.

Imagine how people will scatter when they see the big white glasses coming - who knows that is being recorded and where it is being uploaded to - not I!
[automerge]1573511313[/automerge]

Also, nothing could possibly go wrong with people wearing these while ... driving ... operating heavy machinery ... lol
Nobody seems to scatter with all these doorbell cameras, home and biz cameras and my dash cams. The opposite seems to be true.

The concept sketch is not Apple like. Apple would partner with a high end name brand shades manufacturer and deliver a product made of metal that is the same size as the high end non smart glasses. They would use a name brand to entice the more fashion conscious types and status seekers. They would probably be black at first. And if they could get away with tinting them electronically as in they glass turns dark electronically they would. However, this may be too ambitious for them in their first model. They could still make the glass opaque electronically when in use. Their first pair of glasses may be ones that cannot be worn all the time. There is a huge risk in people losing eyesight or getting into accidents if they can wear them in all situations. Apple may opt to create glasses that wont work in a moving car or make them to be worn for a while and put away. Ones that would be totally opaque and can only be seen through by the cameras on the front. The thing that is going to determine how ambitious they are about these glasses is if they will use screens to show you everything or an overlay on top of clear glass that allows you to see the world at all times. Because if its glass then they will want you to wear them all the time, if its opaque then this is for gaming and gimmicky stuff. I don't think the batteries will hold up for all day use. This will most likely be something you only use inside of your house and maybe 5 years later they make a model for all day wear.

I think they should come with an xbox kinect style module that maps out the room to allow the software to track your own body movements so that you can play games with it and it knows were your arms are positioned in the game. A kinect style module would also make mapping of the room easier for the software to keep up with as you move around. Again, this makes the glasses mostly useful inside the house and not on the road. Its safer to start out this way and avoid negative publicity from people getting into accidents with them or labeling people who wear these as freaks. If its a gaming device there will be less stigma to them as people get used to seeing them being used and they can work longer on the logistics of more ambitious versions.

This could prove to be a significant contribution to a large population (my opinion)

Augmented reality for glasses in two acts:

ACT ONE:
Glasses augment speech with automated Closed Captioning (for the hard of hearing), where the source is narrowed with focus.
ACT TWO: Glasses provide Closed Captioning with Automatic Translation.

Then Apple can claim "can't innovate, my ass!" with due bravado.

Notch is a non-factor. Had the XR since July, upgraded to the Pro Max. Don’t even notice it unless I’m actively looking for it. Again, it’s a nonissue. People just like to complain to complain 🙄
who said i was complaining? people just like to accuse people of complaining it seems. 🙄

From all the concepts and renders, this one used in the article is probably the ugliest one
