You may not have really had the need for simultaneous voice & data before…but you didn't have the iPhone before either. Not having both at once is a real undercutter for the iPhone. No kidding, this phone is so much more that not having it is a real limiting factor. Use it everyday.

Hahahaha, I *do* keep my iPhone 4 on the EDGE network most of the time, though. Better battery life with pretty much the same effective transfer rate...

Wait wait wait. Your all wrong.

My T-Mobile iPhone is way better than AT&T or VZDub. Excellent nation-wide coverage and blazing fast 2g speeds.

Just wait, you'll all come running my way when you're looking for a real cell phone provider.

So, calling people "ignorant", "inappropriate", and "ape" makes you project intelligence, too?

Were you, by chance, also raised by apes?

If syntax and grammar connote intelligence, you certainly are smart. If understanding, respect, logic, and value of thought are part of the calculus I think your posts speak for themselves.

Actually, those of us who strive to project intelligence care. Considering everything is read and not spoken, proper grammar makes posting easier to read and understand. But hey, if you'd rather look like an ape, be my guest.

In general I don't really like people doing lots of other stuff while you are talking with them. In a meaningful conversation, you should actually listen to your peer and dignify him with your attention, rather than surfing the latest news while you tell him something.

I usually can tell the difference whether someone listens or just says "hmm, hmm".

Admittedly, for business users it's another ball game...

all the hate for a decent ad

I can definitely think of times I'd be annoyed w/o Voice and Data at the same time.

Then again I can think of times I've been annoyed w/ AT+T's network; not that I know for certain an iPhone-era Verizon network will be better, but still, maybe this is kind of a draw.

The commercial is decent because while it's a bit of a forced scenario, it's reasonably well-written and acted, and brings out a true differentiator: this is something a Verizon phone won't do. It's an objective difference. Everything Verizon brings to the table (better/wider coverage, better voice quality) is a bit of a subjective thing, and AT+T sill claims faster speeds IF your reception is good. (I guess Verizon also has the objective "wifi hotspot" thing... IF you're willing to pay for it. AND that doesn't seem likely to be exclusive for long.) (And is it "unlimited" data? I've stuck w/ my grandfathered AT+T plan, even though I know I'd be well covered by the cheaper 2Gb.) The commercial gets people thinking about situations where they might want to not disconnect a call just to look something up. (i keep my phone offa wifi at work because of firewall crap)

The real interesting point here are people who waited for Verizon's release. A certain fraction of them probably have reasonable "I KNOW I'm an area with awful AT+T coverage" but for the rest it's more likely "well I'm Verizon's bitch because of family/friends type plans" -- I mean, come on, we've had transferable cell #s for a while now!

That said I'll be AT+T's bitch for another year or so at least with this contract -- not worth buying my way out -- and then I'll see. If Verizon doesn't have Voice and Data worked out, they'd have to find some other way to sweeten the deal, otherwise I'd likely still w/ AT+T

A good and frequent example for the use of voice and data is being
on a call and a need to get a number from your contacts for the
person you are talking to
. The need to do a quick google search in
connection with your conversation is also nice. Remember technology
should move forward for easy of use.

I've never had an iPhone, so I can't say for sure, but since I can check my contacts list on iTouch without being connected to Wi-Fi, I highly doubt that you couldn't check your contacts list while making a phone call (assuming you can multi-task).

Correct me if I'm wrong here.

Wow, aren't you charming? Consider yourself added to my ignore list. I suggest you do the same for me instead of making multiple posts quoting the same thing over and over again.

Also, just to clear up your misunderstanding, I am not nor have I EVER stated I was a mod. I removed a part of your original statement from my quote. If you would have looked closer, you might have seen that. However, you seem to like jumping to conclusions, so I understand you may have missed that.

Have a nice day. I will be, as I won't be seeing your posts anymore :)

AT&T is hanging on... So it really comes down to being able to make and receive calls (Verizon) and faster data rates and simultaneous voice/data (AT&T). I think most people would side with making and receiving calls. I'm going to stick with AT&T for now, but in the future...?

THIS IS SPARTA!!!

seriously though.. i use data and voice pretty much everyday.. in fact.. i just did it while on the phone with my friends (2 callers, which is the max for verizon, mind you) and looked up movie showtime for tonight AND booked it. all while on the call...

not saying that i watch movies everyday, but i would hate it if i would i have to hang up, look up the times, suggested them to my friends, hang up, and go back online and book it...take that verizon:apple:

As a long time Verizon user, I am used to not doing both at the same time on my smart phone. Having said that, I can see how it would occasionally be useful.

The idea here is more likely to stop switching for those that aren't dead set on it. Some areas haev such crap ATT service that nothing will stop those folks. But for the ones where it is okay, and they are used to that whole 'at the Sam time on 3g', they know now what they rae giving up.

Although the ad was rather dumb

You've completely missed the point of this commercial if you believe what you just wrote. There are a million situations they could have portrayed, they just chose that one. The commercial is supposed to make everyone imagine their own little situation and why they would need that ability.

Relying on folks to think up their own situation is not effective advertising. Effective advertising is considering your target group and using something that applies to the whole group. Say, being lost and needing a map. That is way more effective a situation for the varied audience. Or the 'did you get my email' situation. Bumbling schmoo is no good because it is limited in focus and set up in a way where hanging up and then looking on the web wouldn't be a big deal. Making it a bad advertisement

So this as basicly tells me (as a german who has no idea or fanboyisem about the american cell marked) that - if you fail to keep important things in your private live in order - AT&T is the way to got?

Here is the bottom line IMO.

If you have good AT&T service where you live, "talk and surf at the same time" is a great feature. I live in FL and my AT&T service is pretty good I must say.

If your AT&T service is not good where you live and Verizon is better, then "talk and surf at the same time" should not be too important.

All these people that state that they never used voice and data at the same time and saying that just because THEY never used it, doesn't mean that other people find it useful. Just because it doesn't work for them doesn't automatically cancel out the needs of other individuals.

This is nice. I kinda like this pissing match targeting each other. Bring in competition.

This just doesn't strike me as an advertisement that is aimed at VZW customers. Rather it seems to be one aimed at current ATT iPhone customers.

People have had four years to jump on board with ATT because they were the only game in town for iPhone.

It just seems like an add that tells current ATT customers, "this is what you will lose when you go with Verizon."

Idk - just my $0.02

Meh

Great idea, poor execution.

The ad definitely could have been better.. Heck, even swapping FoodSpotting for the Google search, and zooming in closer to the iPhone screen, would have added more visual impact...small changes..

But..

If I were an ad agency working with AT&T, I would have made an ad more like this -
--
Scene - Busy downtown area, crowded with people, cars, cabs, busses, etc (traffic noise, grey sky)

Camera pans and shows people tripping and falling, walking into street signs, walking into lamp posts, cars, etc..., blowing bubblegum bubbles..

Cut to guy walking in sunshine, walking, talking, cut to iPhone, web, app, and talking about it then saying "I love you". (could be dinner, flight to island resort, doesn't matter)

Fade to white, Black (or maybe ATT Blue) letters on screen "It's great to be able to do two things at once" Cut - "iPhone, it does more on AT&T"

--

I give AT&T full permission to use this idea, but if y'all could give me a free year of service if you do use it, that'd be swell ;-)

lame...

I'm perfectly fine being able to talk and surf on the web only when I'm near WiFi (which accounts for 99% of my day)

And, very much to the point, almost certainly this anniversary-forgetter had access to wifi in his business office... unless he is an at&t employee - maybe they don't have wifi at the office and, thus, didn't think of that :)

I provide support at many locations, where non-company devices are prohibited from company wifi, so, many would not actually have that option, unless the company had issued the phone..

Hi
I didn't have a chance to read all of the comments but for those I read...

1) Of course it depends on reception. If you can rarely use your iPhone for "phone" calls; what's the point? Just get an iPod touch.

2) AT&T has done MUCH better "multitask" commercials when the iPhone 3G came out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9npoVrRBDHk I know there are others but I can't seem to find any working YouTube links.

3) I use data and voice quite often. AT&T's latest example was quite lame but there are extremely good reasons to be able to do both. Yes, you can use Wi-Fi and voice on a CDMA network but we don't have a good and open Wi-Fi network every couple of blocks around here. :)

Great point. I can't tell you how often I conference in 3 separate parties in USA & Canada, while also being able to flip over to check mail, text or look something up on line. It honestly amazes me that it does it all at the same time…it's almost like I say it can't do it, but it does it all. I can't part with that benefit, that would make the phone so much less!

Agreed. The sad fact is, there are NO good carrier choices in the US! Thank goodness I don't have to pick a lesser evil, but many do.

(I live in a medium-sized US city, and both AT&T and Verizon are reliable here.)

You just negated your own comment. If you have reliable service then the carrier is good.

Perhaps what you meant is that there are no perfect carriers. As in 100% reliable in 100% of places for 100% of people 100% of the time with zero limitations.

CDMA Technology limitation. Though I heard that CDMA can be upgraded to support it....not sure why Verizon is too cheap to upgrade their network.

Because they are spending those billions on upgrading to the next tech, which will have fewer inherent limits and be used more globally

Sorry to be a nag, but could the american tele-operators get a little attention? It just seems out of scope of this site. The iPhone being released by another operator in a country where it was already available is page 2 news.

Cherio!
