Here is my usual daily scenario.

I ge a phone call, i start talking, i goto check my e-mail while im talking Dropped phone call. meanwhile im still checking e-mail because the signal is so low that s probably getting GPRS speeds.

Screw you AT&T im done with you ******** network and you overpriced crappy service.

And what is it with all this quibbling over "can you hear me now"?

Only iPhone people can argue about now they can receive calls or not as the case may be, when in every other argument against other phones in the race or if they are newly being introduced, it then becomes ALL ABOUT THE APP STORE?!

That call making capability seems to quickly drop off the radar screen!

Here's how they could have done a much better response with the same idea. The concept is great, they just didn't execute it right. (This is of course assuming that voice + data simultaneously is a competitive advantage to call quality)

Instead of the guy researching on Google for a place...they should have had him on the OpenTable app making reservations at some high end place...and just before he stumbles out of the office, they show a "reservation confirmed" on his open table app....it takes a page out of Apple's highly successful marketing strategy which is to showcase the apps in order to sell the hardware.

Agreed. Your version of the commercial would have been great. So afar as the aesthetic (cause who watches commercials for facts), I'd say Verizon won that round.

Never needed, never will

THANK YOU!

Seriously, I've had a verizon smart phone for about 6 years now.. Never once have I needed to browse the internet while talking.

Seriously, I've had a tv for about 54 years now.. Never once have I needed to watch in color.

Seriously, I've had dial-up for about 21 years now.. Never once have I needed a faster connection offered by cable or dsl.

Seriously, I've had candles for about 600 years now.. Never once have I needed electricity.

Seriously, I've had a horse drawn carriage for 100 years now.. Never once have I needed to go more than 15 M.P.H. or go further than 50 miles before feeding my horse.

Seriously, I've had my gramophone player for 124 years now.. Never once have I needed to listen to that mp3.

Seriously, I could do this all day...time waits for no man, nor does technology. Have fun with that 'never needed, never will' mentality.

No need to start a fight here folks. But, it is very harsh for some of you to say that talk and surf at the same time is pointless because this is just one of the many cases that people would use their phones.

I do talk and surf the web same time and many people in my office do, so it is not fair to say absolutely no use.

Go for what works best for you.

For me, I am not married and I don't want to for a while, so this commercial is weak source. Marriage is a whole new problem.

Couldn't agree more. Ive been a long standing verizon customer and am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my new iPhone. I've never come into a situation where I needed to use voice and data at the same time where wifi wasn't readily available. BUT, that doesn't mean I'd turn my nose up at it. Calling it pointless or useless is just envy plain and simple.

That aside, BOTH verizon and AT&T commercials have been insanely weak. They've both gone the route that everyone's expected. The amount of money that's gone into these, when they could have done viral, web, or iAds, and reached more people is absolutely ludicrous.

No one is talking about the purple elephant in the room.

Voice and data is great, but the main problem with At&T in the first place is there is so little voice (dropped calls, poor coverage, etc.) for so many of us that the point is moot.

Selling voice and data is cruel when a great deal of your users are beyond frustrated at their lack of ability to use the iPhone for it's #1 intended purpose.

Do you also have non AT&T iphone device? If so how does it compare you your AT&T iPhone?

I can honestly say that I've never talked on my iPhone and surfed the web with it at the same time, and I've been an AT&T subscriber for 4 years.

AT&T's service has gotten increasingly spotty where I live -- dropped calls and calls not going through are an every day occurrence now. It is not unusual at all for my husband to be a half-mile away from our house at our business and I can't call him because the freaking call fails!

I'd much rather have calls that actually go through than the ability to talk and surf.

I'll be switching to Verizon as soon as my contract is up. In fact, I'm entertaining getting out early on the basis of breach of contract on their part because they seem to be unable to provide the basic service for which I pay out the nose.

Ugh! Who cares?! These differences will be moot when LTE technology arrives...

And for the record, I liked the Verizon commercial better than AT&T's... and I'm an AT&T user.

For work purposes, I use voice and data nearly all the time. Is it essential? Probably not. I could send that email after I hang up with the call. I can check a link sent to me later.

Is it convenient? Yes it is. People actually adapt to having features like this though. They also adapt to not having features like this. I can see why verizon users don't see the need for it, they never had it.

It works though, and it is actually a decent feature to have. If you don't have it, it isn't the end of the world.

What's the big deal? The first iPhone had this same issue because it could only connect to an Edge network.

Eh

That is a pretty weak response. He could NOT wait for the phone call to end. There's absolutely no need to have voice and data at the same time. Verizon smartphone customers have been doing for how long now and we survive easily without it. What are the chances of this happening in real life? Extremely slim to none.

Sorry AT&T... Verizon's massive coverage (important for me since I travel a lot and AT&T 3G coverage is very spotty in my area) > voice + data. You should focus on the 3G speed over Verizon using data gathered by tech sites. That would be far better than trying to convince people that the need for voice + data outweighs 3G coverage.

As an on-call IT professional I am constantly using this feature. I have to pull over and tether the laptop so I can remote into a server or workstation and talk to the customer on my bluetooth headset at the same time. I've also had to do this at home when my DSL was down or at hotels where I didn't wanna pay for their slow room internet. The other benefit of At&t is that I'm getting anywhere from 4-6mbps down and 2-5 up real world (live in dallas) speeds while doing this. I never have an issue with dropped calls or call quality and the rollover minutes feature is indispensable to me as my usage varies in massively ranging amounts month to month.

I have a GPS program on myiPhone and take calls in the car while driving ALL the time. For me this is a HUGE reason to stay with att.

The other 2 reason are that att doesn't STEAL your unused minutes back and the system has been tested by 3rd parties to have a 60% faster data network that Verizon.

They should key on the GPS thing in their commercials IMHO

Not if he is on Verizon, I forgot to mention that. Also, to wonderers, it was an email sent an hour ago. I called to see if he got it, and well, the Verizon BlackBerry couldn't do it. Neither will the iPhone on Verizon.

That is simply not true. Verizon users on Droids can check email that have already been downloaded into the phone, and the iPhone can too. Certain Blackberry models don't keep a full cache of emails.

There's a ton of us who have NEVER been able to do both data and phone calls because we don't live where there's 3G! We won't miss this at all on Verizon.

It was found to be 50% faster, however, it was found to be inconsistent, while Verizon was found to be very consistent. Slow and steady wins the race :)

First... gota say... this is a weak, lame, silly, commercial. No where the impact it could have had.

I use my iPhone for work during the day and often will check things in the background while talking. It's a very convenient feature.

With that said... it would be nice if we could stop the "This is why "Blah Blah" sucks and this is why "Blah Blah" is great. Who cares? You have a choice now, go get the one you like and enjoy your iPhone. To each their own.

Besides... if any of them suck now, it's T-Mobile. Their commercials are so annoying! :D

so you don't...but many do, including me.

you've never had someone call you to look something up online? just the other day, my friend called me asking for directions as he was driving. i was able to use google maps and talk him through directions as his own personal onstar.

I am typically by a computer as well or near wifi. Never has really been an issue for me. There has been that rare occasion where it would have been nice, and I can see where it could be useful to some such as those who uses it on AT&T already, but for me it's not a do or die necessity. Just a nice feature, nothing more.

This is such a lollercaust. I have NEVER needed to look something up and be speaking to someone at the same time. I can see where it might occasionally be useful, but is it really that much more effort to hang up, look it up, and then call them back? Sorry but I'd take Verizon's network over being able to talk and browse at the same time.

The only way this would be useful is if you actually HAD AT&T 3G service in the first place. :)

exactly as it doesnt work if your on EDGE, and given the coverage of att your pretty much on EDGE all the time, so you mind as well not even have the feature.

As I always told my girlfriend what good is the device if you cant use it.

Use voice and data all the time

I use voice and data all the time, i also think it is supposed to be part of the "iPhone experience" as apple even aired commercials about what you can do on a call with the iPhone 3GS with their "on hold" commercial, plus AT&T speeds cant be beat by any 3G network, at least not in my area. Never drop calls, plus you get the GSM standard.

For your info you can text and check/send email while on voice with verizon, I do it on my blackberry all the time

false advertising:

my ATT iphone lets me never talk at all. the reception in cambridge just plain sucks. i can surf the web through my own verizon wifi cable though.....

Same here, I have been using my old rink-a-dink flip phone for 4 years and text while im on a call all the time. The only downer is that we cannot surf the web while on a call. Still I don't think we are missing what we never had on VW.
