So you got/stayed with a provider that didn't provide you with good service because of the iPhone? And you stayed with them why?

#fail

^ THIS. I never understand why people stay with a provider that they know has bad reception in their area then resort to whining and complaining. No phone is worth it if you can't use it as a phone.

If I had sucky AT&T service, my iPhone would be gone. I wouldn't take to message boards to cry and complain about it.

No need to look for such a rare situation. I use voice and data all the time, for planning stuff (movie, dinner, coffee shop, shopping, hiking) with friends. I have them all on speakerphone while I look up what's open, prices, directions, trail lengths, weather, etc. At other times I'm discussing stuff with clients, and when they want to discuss something on a web page, or send me something by email, I can actually view it!

I'm no AT&T fan, but it would really suck to have to hang up those calls, check stuff online, call everyone back, discuss, hang up again, check more stuff online, call them all again, etc. etc.!

Otherwise it's like the days of dialup where we'd have to alternate phone and Internet use.

(Plus it's nice to be able to surf and play Words With Friends while someone drones on!)

Thanks for the constructive examples. Seems like you are (like I am) in the lucky situation that your calls are not getting dropped. I work with someone in Atlanta, when he calls from is iPhone, the call is always getting dropped after 5-6 minutes, every single time. Very annoying.

So if you would be in this situation - would you rather keep calling back every 5min to enjoy data while talking you would you prefer not getting kicked out every 5min. I think in this situation I would rather prefer not having data and hang up if I need to look up something (since on AT&T I would anyway getting dropped after 5min)

--> depends all on the situation and you have to choose the lesser evil

People arguing which COMMERCIAL is better? C'mon have we really come to this?

First iPhone vs Android
Now iPhone Provider1 vs iPhone Provider 2

Ridiculous.

Almost realistic -- except it should show the call dropping twice during that conversation and end with the wife asking her husband when he was going to switch to Verizon...

Exactly. And the phone should be showing 5 bars of signal when it drops. And the call should not go through until the second or third attempt.

"Simultaneous voice and data" requires you to actually be able to make and maintain a voice connection.

Agreed. The sad fact is, there are NO good carrier choices in the US! Thank goodness I don't have to pick a lesser evil, but many do.

(I live in a medium-sized US city, and both AT&T and Verizon are reliable here.)

I've grown accustomed to using this feature more than I expected. It's just like anything else in that once you get used to having it, kind of hard to go backwards.

I've been on AT&T since 2004 while a lot of my friends have been on Verizon. Some of them bagged out of Verizon last year but not just to get an iPhone. They all have the same complaint about Verizon - billing issues with overcharging, hidden fees, and billing errors that result in a lot time on the phone fighting to get the charges reversed. When someone asks about the best wireless carrier, our collective answer is, "They all kind of suck, but..." and then fill in the blank.

All the carriers have issues, in my opinion, whether it's spotty coverage or customer service lacking, etc. You have to pick your battle based on the particular issue of priority.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

Let's get real here. AT&T would have dropped the call sometime during this 30 seconds!

Don't tell them that. Whenever the weaknesses of the Verizon iphone are pointed out you ger the stupid"at least I can make a call" comment. It happens everytime. I have rollover minutes, I have voice/data and I haven't dropped a call in 2 years. But I still have to listen to that stupid comment.

Here's a different argument for you

Nearly ALL of my friends and family are on Verizon. With free in-network calling I can and have always gone with the lowest priced family plan, speak for several thousand minutes per month, and never even come close to reaching my minute cap.

I use it all the time. I couldn't even consider switching to Verizon until they eventually add that capability. For me personally, it would be a huge step backwards, but I'm one of those people that has little trouble at all with my iPhone on AT&T.
Same, I have great service with AT&T and after seeing those horrendous 3g speeds on Verizon. I think I'll be sticking with AT&T.

This is the exact type of comment a previous post was talking about.

I can both make and maintain a voice connection just fine where I live. People need to stop speaking in general terms for eveyone and just talk about their particular situation. Many people can make calls just fine.

If you can't then maybe you are with the wrong provider.

Thank you for a valid arguement as opposed to the stupid dropped call post.

I think it is one of those things for VZdub customers that if you haven't ever had it, you are used to what you have. I was a VZdub customer for almost 10 years and switched to AT&T for the iPhone. I've been very happy. The Chicagoland coverage for AT&T is just as good as Verizon. I actually get better coverage in my condo now.

I do use the internet/talk at the same time. Not a ton but really nice to have sometimes. I actually think with the customers leaving AT&T, the network is going to have less stress on it and will make things better for us people staying with AT&T. Also, for people like me who use more data than talking and switch, you will NOT be happy that your download/upload speeds are cut in half at a minimum.

For all you VZdub(Big RED) supports - if talking/internet wasn't a big deal, then why is your company switching to LTE? Yes, LTE has a lot more room for growth with speed than Wi-Max(CDMA 2000) but LTE is based off GSM technology.

Think about this, the headache that AT&T went through switching from TDMA to GSM sucked! While Verizon did the easy thing and go from TDMA to CDMA. I think the one thing people don't realize is the Verizon iPhone won't even work when Verizon decides to shutdown their 3G(CDMA) network and then have their 4G(LTE) with a backbone of GSM(Edge - 2G). Verizon's HUGE 3G network will be gone unless they start putting two antenna's in phones which I doubt. So in 2 to 3 years, the biggest and most reliable network I predict will have switched from Verizon to AT&T.

All AT&T has to do to rollout 4G(LTE) is take a tower down for a day or 2 tops and switch out the antenna and some cards. While Verizon has to build their 4G towers from the ground up. Why do you think Verizon was in such a hurry to start and AT&T is like....ahhhh, we're ok. We'll keep expanding and speeding up our 3G network. So if 4G went down for AT&T, they have their fast 3G(What T-mobile calls 4G - HSPA+ -- AT&T already has in Chicagoland) as the backbone while Verizon only has their new GSM(2G - Edge) as the backbone to their 4G.

With all that said, people should live in the now and if you do not get coverage in your area with AT&T, I recommend the Verizon iPhone to people I know. There is no denying that Verizon has a better/larger network....for now....

I like to use voice and data same time, BUT if I can get better reception over voice and data, I'll take better reception any time. A+ for Verizon on this one...

I can't believe this argument is even happening, aren't we all really just iPhone fans? Both the VZ & AT&T are good networks I've used both, I was with VZ and switched when the first iPhone came out. I've had great service with AT&T and as far as being able to talk and surf the Internet at the same time, it's a feature I use and like. However if the the network service was bad I could switch to VZ and live without it. The one thing that would be important to me is the speed of 3G, if it's true that AT&T is faster that's who gets my business.

But I'm not going to argue who's better because it truly depends on where you are as well as a couple of network issues that you should base your decision on. After all it's just what makes our iPhone work and that's our main concern!

higher speed > surf while talking

I'm just not impressed with ATT right now... They need to figure it out.

Actually most of the early reviews were saying that att was 30% faster even in areas where they couldn't call out. That's been my experience, while where I live att is fantastic, I visited some family in Alabama, I had one bar, couldn't really call out, but my iphone had faster download speeds than their full signal android phones. CDMA is very limited, unless your on edge or have absolutely no att signal, att IS going to be faster. I get 5 megs down, 2 up. Someone else said they are faster on edge than their friend on verizon 3G.

In some markets, you'll have immproved network reliability, but NOT speed, in my market, I have great att service and never drop a call. Recently I was on the phone with someone for almost 2 hours, both iPhones, and obviously, both att. It's market dependant

That is a pretty weak response. He could NOT wait for the phone call to end. There's absolutely no need to have voice and data at the same time. Verizon smartphone customers have been doing for how long now and we survive easily without it. What are the chances of this happening in real life? Extremely slim to none.

Because clearly, the way you use your phone should be how everyone uses theirs? And of course, this is the only example of needing both voice and data at the same time right? I frequently have my phone tethered while I'm talking on it. Having a voice and data stream are why I'm sticking with ATT. Try thinking outside of your own little box before assuming everyone's needs are the same as your own.

Do you have AT&T in SF?
