New AT&T Commercial "Answer"

What really should happen here is even before he get to hear what the wife has called him about, his call will be disconnected due to connection problem.

He gets frustrated, the wife gets furstrated
End of the real story

Verizon said they will come up with software update later this year to allow the feature, so yea AT&T be honest

Oh did they now? LOL.

CDMA has a PHYISCAL limitation that doesn't allow simultaneous voice and data. It's not physically POSSIBLE. What they MIGHT do is fix some annoyances, for example, tethering with the iPhone reviewers say is interrupted with an incoming call. I've heard of systems in which a user is notified of a call using the tethering software (via internet), so the user can choose to remain connected. THAT could happen, but no software update could make simultaneous voice and data happen.

It's like saying a software update on my MacBook will give me a quad-core CPU and 12GB of RAM. CDMA just can't do it, it's not physically possible. With LTE, yes, and a future LTE iPhone will be able to do simultaneous voice/data on any network, I believe it's the same with WIMAX (I'm sure it is, since it's all data), so it's going to be a short-lived annoyance. But no, NOTHING will change it.

That is a pretty weak response. He could NOT wait for the phone call to end. There's absolutely no need to have voice and data at the same time. Verizon smartphone customers have been doing for how long now and we survive easily without it. What are the chances of this happening in real life? Extremely slim to none.

Sorry AT&T... Verizon's massive coverage (important for me since I travel a lot and AT&T 3G coverage is very spotty in my area) > voice + data. You should focus on the 3G speed over Verizon using data gathered by tech sites. That would be far better than trying to convince people that the need for voice + data outweighs 3G coverage.

Yup. In the nearly 4 years of having an iPhone, I can count the number of times I've needed to talk and surf at the same time on one hand. It's a weak argument for most people. I'd just appreciate strong coverage everywhere in the city.

I agree that the AT&T spot is poorly done. If I get this right and no Verizon user can talk and use data at the same time, then they should have used a turn-by-turn based online navigation like Skobbler or Google Maps Navigation (on Android) in this example. Because it's a far more realistic situation to use a GPS app while driving and receiving a call at the same time.

This really sucked in the times before iOS multitasking, and I guess it sucks now on Verizon, too! I'm glad over here in Europe we have speedy and reliable GSM/3G networks with good coverage, so we don't have to make such a choice...

Hmm, that's odd. I'm in a building right now, and I have 4/5 bars with AT&T and have never had a problem.

I'll cede it was hyperbole. However, time after time, the people I'm around with Verizon phones can almost always get signal, whereas us GSM users are more hit and miss. In my 3.5 years of using an iPhone NEVER has a CDMA phone user said they do not have signal and I did. NEVER. I do a little traveling now and again, and this is always the case.

Those blaming AT&T are simply narrow minded the least...
There is a reason for calling it "smartphone". If you can't use data+voice at the same time then what's the point of having an iphone?
It's not just doing some google while on the phone, which alone it can be proved very useful, but also navigation, internet browsing, or browsing your company's files through VPN... you name it. Simultaneous voice+data is a must for these phones.

AT&T is spot on with this commercial.

And I agree that those of us living in Europe are blessed with 3G and have none of those restrictions, including great coverage

To me, the lack of simultaneous voice and data is a deal breaker. Sure I've used it for little things here and there, like helping someone on the phone with directions or reservations on OpenTable while talking with my wife, but it's become a critical feature for me.

Traveling frequently for work often forces me to run my business from locations without wifi and I find myself constantly on the phone with clients or colleagues where I'll need to reference emails they are sending live in real time or retrieve specific data online during the call. This often happens multiple times a day and I simply could not operate without simultaneous voice and data. It would kill my productivity and make me look unreliable and inefficient. So for those that make blanket statements that it isn't needed and is just a luxury you can work around not having it, that absolutely is not true for many of us.

More broadly, why can't we just be happy that we now have choices as to which network we'd like to use our iPhones on instead of in-fighting about it? Why does it always have to be a competition? Sure, each has their advantages and you can choose now where you'd like to send your monthly cell payment, so why bash each other? Does it make a bit of difference to you personally if I am on AT&T and happy with it? Does one's choice in cell phone provider make them a better person?

It's a shame when you can only elevate your status by stepping on top of someone else.

Save the fighting for bashing this Fandroid people instead!

(That's a joke, BTW!)

Enough about American carriers already.........

Agreed. I can understand Americans' debacle though. It's such a shame. CDMA is an old dead technology that most of the world has moved away from, and if it weren't for AT&T sucking so much in the U.S., no one would care and Android would have an imprint like WP7.

Unfortunately, the U.S. doesn't have a competitive GSM market and AT&T hasn't cut it with network coverage for a lot of people. Still, seems a lot of Verizon fanboys don't appreciate the limitations of their network, let alone voice + data at the same time. Download speed comparisons anyone? It seems like all their options kinda suck.

The fact that they're squabbling over this crap via dueling iPhone ads is kind of sad. It's like two parents taking shots at each other over a custody battle.

Bottom line,

AT&T and iPhone: network connectivity less reliable, more network features

Verizon and iPhone: network connectivity more reliable, less network features

It happens everytime, the most perfect example is been navigating using Google maps turn by turn navigation in your car and having the ability to pick up a call while navigating. I'm able to pick up my call and not get my google maps interrupted in anyway and still be able to get to my destination while taking a call.

Att>verizon.

Honestly, I rarely actually call people I mostly text, but when I do I often have to search for something at the same time, and AT&T is much much faster. And verizon doesn't work at my house, so I might be a bit biased.

Incorrect, completely. I've been in areas where this is true but to generalize with a statement like that is just stupid. I my area AT&T has much better coverage then Verizon. I never have dropped calls and side by side mine phone verses a friends (Verizon), I've have better speeds on edge then he gets on 3g. And since they have expanded their 3g coverage in the area to most places AT&T wins here hands down. Is this true in every market? No.

higher speed > surf while talking

I'm just not impressed with ATT right now... They need to figure it out.

On Verizon if your surfing on your phone and someone calls you does the call take priority or do they get an engaged tone?

So its nice to have voice and data at the same time, once a year, if you're stupid enough not to remember your own anniversary?

Not completely true

If you happen to be in an area not covered by AT&T's 3G you'll be in the same boat as the Verizon folks. EDGE and GPRS is also data or voice, not both simultaneously. Have a weak 3G signal and get dropped down to EDGE? There goes your data connection!

There's a number of apps that require voice and data at the same time and as others have said, you might need to look something up while on the phone.
