Have to check these out. It's almost winter and I don't want to use my Powerbeats or Sony 1000XMs in pouring rain. For $50 might be worth a try to see how much rain they can take.

My concern was that the page on Apple's site didn't say anything at all about water or sweat resistance. Usually, Apple puts that pretty prominently in the specs, so until something specific comes out I wouldn't assume these are for heavy outdoor/workout use.

BeatsX are horrible products. 3 of them down the drain. Same crap... just decided to stop working, flashing red/white light of death. They don’t last and are not worth the price of admission.
Same here. Purchased one, stopped working, replaced under warranty and before long it stopped working again with that dreaded red and white flash.

That was me.
I keep hearing how a cheap pair of $20 wired earbuds sound better than the Airpods (don't have Airpods myself).
I once bought wired JVC Xtreme earbuds on sale for $10 and they sounded amazing. Hoping these will be similar.

The BeatsX were not exactly a paragon of neutrality but offer up some V-shaped fun. I appreciated them for that and they worked well for commuting. walking around and conference calls. Hope this Flex model work out for you!

Thats a good price. I had the BeatsX but I wasnt too fond of the cable. It would always require me to readjust it or it would be downright annoying when doing things like the bench press.

Ended up getting a pair of the Powerbeats Pro and have been really enjoying them.

Bought Beats X on day one and got about 3 years of life out of them before they flaked out a few months ago. I've been teetering on getting AirPods Pro to replace them, but they are so expensive for someone like me who doesn't actually need noise cancelling, etc. These Beats Flex are an instabuy for me.
$50 is a really great price for these if they sound anything like the BeatsX. I went through two pairs of those before giving up because of the poor quality in the cabling system leading to audio disconnects and inactive buttons. If the build quality is improved and audio quality is good or better, this is indeed a steal.

Someone asked if these sound better than AirPods. YES. These and the BeatsX can create a tight seal for sound isolation and better bass response. AirPods are not designed to provide that kind of experience while AirPod Pros are. IMO AirPods outright SUCK for music in comparison. I've been using in-ear, sealed earphones for over 20 years and they are the only style of earphone I can actually enjoy (along with over-ear open headphones). However, many people don't like in-ears so prefer AirPods and the like.
For active sports where I worry about losing AirPods, BeatsX are perfect. Mostly listen to podcasts so quality of audio isn't a huge deal either.

I will say BeatsX break constantly. I go through about a pair a year, but at this new price point that makes it much better. Hopefully the build quality of the new 'Flex' model is better than the older X version.

Heck yes, agreed with all of you fellas. The BeatsX where my favorites, especially for sports, even if constantly breaking between 6months to a year of use (would squeeze out warranty until it would be over, not only X, had the same issue with Powerbeats).
That is until the AirPods Pro appeared (agreed with the in-ear silicon seal, can’t do the plastic ones like the EarPods) which I never take off except for quick charges here and there. The excuse was that connectivity and no cable hassle is pretty much improved, but if the BeatsX has all of the benefits except still keeping a cord between earphones, I find them to be a steal for $50 if I’m honest. Might just even get one as a backup plan.

I know it's still W1. I was expressing surprise rather than seeking clarification. I'm surprised because the W1 is a very old chip and I thought they would've at least upgraded it to an H1 like the rest of their bluetooth headphone lineup.

why does it matter?

I think part of the reason that it uses a type-c, is because, they don't want to pay for MFi certification (if they want to use lightning port).

Interestingly, I asked via the Apple Store app chat function if Beats Flex would be available with AppleCare. Unfortunately, they are not offering AppleCare for them.

I asked because I went through two pairs of Beats X that failed after a little over a year of use, each. At the $49 price point I’m willing to take a gamble. It might be better to wait for these to be available at resellers like Best Buy if you want an extended warranty option for quick replacement.

I loved the BeatsX, lasted 2.5 years of heavy use until it went finally started going crazy with blinking white/red lights. The Beats Flex looks like a proper upgrade with lots of new features and at just 50 bucks its great.

Yes, although only as regular Bluetooth headphones, the easy pairing features won’t work and you’ll have to pair them the old fashioned way.

Thanks, yeah I don't care about any of the extra features, just tired of the wired earbuds being ripped out of my ear while doing yardwork. So that means the features like pause when taking the earbuds out won't work, right? And that goes for changing volume via the earbuds too?

The inline volume and play / pause controls should work as I believe they are part of the standard bluetooth audio featureset. The auto pause I'm not so sure about, it may depend how it has been implemented as the sensors may be in the earbuds themselves and emulate the standard pause control but I'm just guessing a bit here.

Exactly what DaveMcM76 said. The physical controls on the earbuds should work normally. Don't know if it will pause when you remove them from your ears or not though.

edit- I forgot about the 12 hour battery life! I believe beatsX was 8 hours, so that’s a dramatic increase. That’s almost as perplexing as the dramatically decreased price. These headphones perplex me, in a mostly good way.

I wish I ever got 8 hours out of my £129 BeatsX. Probably the most is 3 hours.

I’d agree with jbaby, your pair must have been defective. I got pretty close to 8 hours in the beginning. After a couple years it was down to probably around 5.

I definitely got the advertised 8 hours for the first year or more. Then it slowly dropped to 7 and 6 towards the end. Calls would cause very fast drops in battery, music was never a problem

You had a defective pair.

I thought they might be defective but (when they they will still in the warranty period) I did some research and found a lot of people reporting poor battery life.

YMMV, I’ve read wildly varying opinions too, my experience thankfully was great. Still I believe at just 50 bucks it’s good deal and like any product they’d have ironed out any issues for the second gen.
