An Examiner post claims that Apple is planning on finally releasing the iPod Touch 3G with Camera this spring.
We have heard from an inside source who claims the camera version of the iPod Touch 3G will be released this Spring. The source confirms to us that the iPod Touch 3G with camera had actually been planned for release this past September, but had problems passing quality control. Unlike Samsung, Apple actually has a Quality Control department.
Supposedly, the new iPod Touch will share the same video-only camera of the iPod Nano.

The Examiner's article was posted by one of their freelance contributors who are encouraged to write on their specialized topics. In this case, it comes from the "Gadgets" examiner. These are essentially a collection of blogs in which the authors are compensated more based on variables like page views and unique visitors. Given that and no particular track record for this author, we'd place the reliability of the information in line with any other unknown "guy-with-blog".

Also I believe that a video only camera is a stupid idea.

I find a need to take a picture more often then I find a need to have a video.

I agree, the video-only camera is basically useless. I rarely say "I'd love to have a video of this" over a picture... I was thinking of actually just not renewing any iPhone, and just getting the Touch and some cheap Virgin Mobile phone, but now, that odd thought makes even less sense, and enough to make me just not want that route at all anymore.

And I'm an unknown "guy-with-blog"... ;) Do I have street cred? I did break Asphalt 4 and the Walmart iPhone ad, both of which I still feel special for.

"MEH" says it all. Unless my Touch takes a dump, I'll be fine with simply continuing to use my 2nd gen. It won't last forever, but I'm sure I can skip this minor upgrade. Maybe the Touch model that comes out after the upcoming one, will make my heart beat a little faster, but I think the one mentioned would be more appealing to someone who doesn't yet own a Touch. Come to think of it, IS THERE ANYONE WHO DOESN'T YET HAVE A TOUCH???? :)

Somebody tell Jobs he needs to up his game.

Why would Apple release an iPod outside of the others? I know it's been done before, but with the iPod line pretty much set now, I wouldn't expect any updates until September again.

However, we all know that Apple doesn't answer to schedules and I wouldn't be surprised if new iPod touches were released sooner than expected.

I guess my point is, time will tell.

I'm not upgrading from my nano till it gets a STILL camera. I have a VGA camera on my phone, and it's horrible. anyway, how often would I need a video camera over a still?

I wouldn't mind a camera on the iPod Touch, since I use it way more than my 5 year old Nokia. However, I would really like it to take STILL images, not just video. How come a camera that can record multiple frames can't record single frames? That doesn't make sense. How come the original iPhone could take STILL photos and not videos? What is this limitation that allows either one or the other, but not both? I think they could easily use the camera from the original iPhone in the new iPod Touch...

I would be more interested in GPS and a magnetometer though!

the iPod nano camera inside the iPod touch creates an ocean of problems, so apple scrapped that idea, until september 2010 when the iPhone camera is more compact - then you will see iPod touch with camera

nintendo DSi is a 'games machine', like the touch, but the DSi has two cameras too.

Video only? Cut the she-it.

Apple loves being behind everyone else then introducing a feature, that is years old, as innovation. Apple workers, do you actually use the products you produce? (/rant. sorry, rough week.)

What other portable media player has a camera in it exactly, video or still? I'm definitely interested in the new touch, be a 1G touch owner, and the idea of video only isn't too terrible to me. I have lots of options for a still camera already. I carry my cell camera with me all the time of course, and I bring my dSLR if I think I am going to take photos. But bringing a video camera on top of that can be a pain, so having a very small video cam wouldn't be bad. Of course, doing both would be nice, but of the two, if I had to pick it would be video, oddly.

Stick a stills camera in it and I'll be first in line. I don't carry my digital SLR everywhere I go so this would be useful, and my RAZR doesn't exactly take viewable photos. The 2.5G jump was okay but I'm still waiting for a camera.

Video only? Unless the price drops i'd rather get the non-camera third gen.

I"M not really interested in the video-only camera. Like others, my phone takes crappy pics and I actually have some issues with my dSLR right now.

So one with a still camera would be welcomed, but i've decided to not wait it out.

But the iPod touch is not a phone, so whats your point?

Valid point when comparing to the iPhone 3GS, but not on the touch.

Phones don't always have cameras too so my point I guess is if you're going to put one in, why hamper it software-wise to not let it take photos?

Should I wait?

I'm planning on buying an iPod Touch very soon. I don't care for the camera mentioned in this rumor but is it possible that if such an update were to occur, that Apple would drop the 8GB model and replace it with a 16GB model with the faster processor found in the current 32GB and 64GB models? I suppose that this will probably happen eventually but I'd much rather hear about such an update from a more reliable source.

Perhaps Apple has decided to update iPods earlier in the year so as not to interfere with the spotlight of the rumored tablet due for the second half of 2010? If this is the case, should I wait for Spring?

The camera in the touch will be identical to the one in the 3GS.

Having disassembled both, I can positively assure you that this is impossible. The camera module in the 3GS is deeper than the entire iPod touch - it would not fit without a significant re-design. When did Apple ever make a device thicker?

The sensor in the Nano is only having a 0.3 megapixels (VGA) resolution and there is no AF - who would really use it for stills? If absolutely needed, extracting a frame from the video will do.

What may make more sense is to give the touch a front-facing camera for video chats, the Nano module with VGA resolution would be more than good enough for this.

The camera in the touch will be identical to the one in the 3GS.

It actually won't. The Autofocus camera found in the iPhone 3GS is quite a bit thicker than the space the iPod Touch 3G left for the camera.
The iPod Nano Camera fits in that space perfectly.

EDIT: I was beaten to it.

When they added a camera to the iPod Nano.
