I personally wouldnt buy the 2400, if you are used to PVA/IPS monitors you will notice issues right away.

My only question is, is it worth buying the 2407 for 100$ cheaper?

Has anyone will the 2407 run into the ghosting bug? I havent seen it in person but I dont want to buy a monitor with a known flaw.

Thanks
Dave

Well, I'm not sure that a $100 savings (equals a 13% discount??) is a good enough discount to buy last generation's technology.

As for the 30" Dell's, they are selling the old 3007 for $1050, compared to $1999 for the 3008. That's QUITE a difference, and may be enough savings to compensate for buying the older technology.

(FYI, I currently use the 2407, but have nothing to add about the ghosting issue as I use it for applications, not games or video playback.)

Like said above I decided to not buy old technology, no matter how good it still is.

I am waiting to hear back about a 15% off coupon and then will order the 2408. Hopefully after tax and shipping (coupon too) it will be just over 600$

where would I go to find out more about 15% off
also
does anyone think the 2408 will have ghosting on games/high action movies?

You are definitely looking at some trade-offs. First of all, a TN based monitor would be fairly bad for photoshop. Having a 6bit panel, it doesn't have the color range of other 8bit ones. That means you won't be able to work with and look at your photos correctly.

Now, what the TN does offer is faster response time, which is generally better for games. However, that depends on how discerning your eyes are. I've been playing games on older panels with much longer response times than the new PVA/IPSs and I've not had a problem. I would say unless you're a competitive gamer, you don't have to worry about response time too much.

Plus consider that the TN panels colors make your games/movies look worse too. They often crush blacks (less detail in darker games).

As long as the monitors have the inputs you need (in this case DVI and HDMI), and you can afford it, I would always go for the non-TN based panel.

I personally have the 24" BenQ that support 1080P output (forgot the exact model - at work and cannot check). Haven't hooked up to my new Mac Pro yet, but I have excellent results from hooking it up to my Windows system and PS3. Back when it first came out, I paid like $1000 for it, but it should be cheaper now. Tons of connection options (component, composite, etc.), way better than the old Dell 30", which only support DVI (dual-link, of course).

I thought the ghosting was only an issue with the HC model, not the regular model?!

Is this intended to replace the regular or the HC model?

The 24" HC is still listed on the site. Admitedly it's at a discount (les 100), but I don't necessarily read that as meaning the 2408 is the replacement.

I think the 22" Ultrasharp may still be the best buy: 2208WFP .

I believe i read the ghosting issue was because of the chips in the monitor. I also read that this monitor is somewhat earlier than expected. So my guess is that they wanted to get rid of the 2407 and its ghosting issues before anymore go out.

the 15% off coupon is for small/medium business and i found one on a certain bidding website :D ~3$ after "shipping"

There is also a regular 10% off for home.

i just ordered the 2407WFP-HC this morning! i ordered it from the Home & Home Office section rather than the Small & Medium Business section. Now i see there is a $100 discount on the Small & Medium Business page.

If I call and bring this up, will they ask me if I am a business and for proof or something?

Wow. I can't wait to read the reviews of the new 2408. Since I'll need something a bit more adequate for my Mac Pro than two 19" LCDs, the 2408 may just fit the bill. Of course I won't pay Dell $700.00 for a 24" monitor. I'll wait for price drops and specials.

The monitor you are referring to is the Dell low end 24" (E248WFP) - it has a TN panel. The US also has the low end 24". The 2407WFP and 2407WFP-HC are the higher end 24"s with PVA/S-PVA panels. 2408WFP is this years replacement for the 2407.

Is the 24 inch monitor advertised on the UK site different than that on the US site - it has a different model number so I assume it is but just wanted to check:

thanks for this. i do like to play games at a competitive level, but havent been doing so much latley(thus getting a mac)

but what about high action movies? fast moving just like a game.
is the panel on this dell okay for that? or do we have to wait untill there are reviews/ people that have tell us.

Not a gamer

I have a 2407WFP-HC which seems pretty nice but shadow density changes drastically if you move your head even slightly. I have read IPS panels are better in this regard. Might not be an issue if you are a gamer but I wanted it for Photoshop and am somewhat disappointed.

What are you implying with those rolling eyes? Please don't go on a diatribe about how the 30" ACD is superior in every facet to the new 3008. This could be entertaining.

LOL

Just rolling my eyes because I was expecting Apple to update the ACDs. IMHO, these ACDs are overpriced considering how long they have been in the market and the lack of bells and whistles compared with the 3008.

Let's just put it this way: the response times in consumer LCD HDTVs (tvs, not monitors) are probably waaay higher than in this monitor, and so far there hasn't been a major uproar from all the people watching Die Hard on them :)

No, not the same as the 3008 - going to the US website, the E248WFP is listed as a cheaper model, for US$375.

Quite right - we're all waiting for the next generation of ACD's. Curious what the specs will be compared to the competition...

I have no idea how many companies make the screens for these 30"ers, but the specs on the new NEC 30" look quite similar to the Eizo FlexScan SX3031W-H specs (both should cost about $2200-2500). I'm curious if they are the same monitor, and if the next generation ACD's will be similar.

If I can get a better gamut for a 20-30% premium over the cheaper new 30" monitors, I'd spend that cash in a minute.

Just a small update on the 2408.

After ordering I received the order acknowledgment email but no order # etc..

I called and they can not find the order information, they transfered me to someone to re-order. They couldnt even find the 2408 to order, I am waiting for a call back to see whats going on..

Who knows.

I just want Dell to bring out the "2708". I want a bigger physical screen for enjoying games and movies, even if the resolution can be handled on a smaller monitor.

I have the 27" samsung and I can say that it's a nice difference from a 24."

I actually prefer bigger pixels, especially with Aperture and it's 1:1 being the maximum zoom issue.

you shouldn't need to use OSX's "zoom" handicap accessible feature just to see your photo's pixels clearly (blurrily but bigger).

For that reason I prefer the 27" to the 30" displays for photo editing. For page layout and general working, though, having all of those pixels is nicer.

thanks for the update. keep them comming as this might be my next monitor as well.

UPDATE: I gave in and ordered the 2407. They have no idea whats going on with the 2408. I figure if they come out with the 2408 in the next month I can always return it and get that one.

Who knows
