you are obviously biased and a fanboy for hating on a line of highly recommended monitors simply because of the brand name

Yeah, I hope we are not treating people the same way we treat name brands. Sheesh, so what its a Dell, they are better at making displays anyway.

RE:
"It's a Dell. Why would someone buy Dell?"

I've been a Mac user exclusively since 1987 (and an Apple // user before that!).

My Dell UltraSharp 1905FP is, without a doubt, the BEST display I've ever owned. Its quality BEATS my white Intel iMac hands down.

Obviously, you've never seen a Dell UltraSharp with a Mac, properly set up.

My question in return to you is, "why would anyone waste all that money on an Apple display, when you can get equal quality and three times the warranty protection from Dell?"

my point exactly

I look at it this way, if the extra funds are not an issue and you like your display to look as good off as it does on get the Apple display. If function over form is your thing get the U2410. Sure the aluminum case of the Apple is nicer looking but all the connectivity and adjustability with the Dell is very nice as well. Check out the beginning of this YouTube of the U2410, you can't do that with the Apple display. Both are very nice monitors

I've been using my Dell W2300 LCD TV for about 5 years now with no problem. I had intended to buy the 2408WFP as my next monitor and then I saw this yesterday. The panel on this is clearly better than the previous model, however I prefer the looks and stand on the previous model. Also, while not a big deal, I'm a little puzzled that they didn't go LED with this model.

Please be on the lookout for any new coupon codes for this one. Unfortunately, I missed out on the last round. Can get a 7% epp, but would really like to get the price the folks got last week.

Me too. I would love a coupon code for this amazing display! I wish I saw this deal sooner :(

It's a Dell. Why would someone buy Dell?

To join the piling-upon; I disagree, and I owned a Ultrasharp. Awesome LCD, still awesome even though I bought it back in 2003. The new ones keep looking better and better! Personally I would buy a Dell Ultrasharp instead of an Apple display. Same, if not better, quality, WAY more ports, and saves me hundreds? IN!

2410

I was looking at buying an Apple refurbished 24" for $599. I just don't know if I could work with the glassy display. I have used a Apple 20" ACD (acrylic type) since they were released in 2003, so I know how good IPS displays look. I also have a Dell 19" Widescreen which is nice considering the price.

The other consideration is that I have a decked out Mac mini that, eventually, I want to drive 2 matching 24" displays. I can't do that without 2 MiniDisplayPorts, since the Mac mini only has one, and in Apple's short sightedness, that's the only input on the 24" ACD. I don't feel like buying a Mac Pro at this time, especially just to run 2 Apple 24" ACDs. I'd rather spend the money on a new MBP.

Another consideration is price. The Dell is $599 list, the Apple is $899. I can get the Apple for $799 but that's a lot for an 24" LCD without calibration software/hardware, which would make it worth $999 to me.

Profit- Apple is selling the refurbs for $599. Apple makes profit on most of their refurbs, so that means that they are making over $300 profit on the retail priced 24" LCD. Way too greedy for my tastes.

So I bit the bullet and got the U2410 for $479.20 plus tax and shipping. I thought about buying 2, but decided just to get one for now, to test it out. If they are really as good as they should be, then I can buy a second one later and they should calibrate close each other.

I do plan on going to the Apple Store and checking out the 24" ACD again, after I have spent time with the Dell U2410, but within the return period.
I'm setting up a new home office, so I have to see how the glassy would work in the new environment.

Also the warranties are polar opposites:
Apple - 1 year, pixel policy, something like 7 bad pixels to get a replacement?
Dell - Ultrasharps, 3 year warranty, 1 bad pixel (stuck bright, not dead) gets a replacement.
It seems Dell has higher confidence in the quality of their Ultrasharps.

Any suggestions for testing the U2410, I just got it from FedEx.
I've used SuperCal in the past. I'll post pics and a review after I have used it for a couple of days

Anybody remember the days when the first Apple 22" ACD (1600x1024) cost $3999?

You bought an Apple machine for a reason even though it was more expensive. Why should you compromise for a cheaper uglier Dell monitor.

My workplace:

100% Apple laptops. iBooks, Macbooks, and and Air.

100% Dell Ultrasharps. 2408FPW, 2007PFW x2, 2209WA

The iBooks are slowly dying off as they are over 5 years old - two have died in the last 6 months but everything else is fine. The monitors are lovely.

this has probably been asked before...

As a Graphic Design student about to go into capestone next semester, what would benefit me more? the U2410 or the 24" ACD? Does the glass from the ACD take away from color accuracy?

Cheaper in price only. Uglier yes, but don't ignore the compromise of buying the ACD.
  • Fewer connection options
  • Documented issues with dust behind glass
  • No "zero pixel" warranty
  • Nowhere near as adjustable (height, pivot, tilt, vertical)

You're right, I bought an apple computer for a reason...It works really, really well. That's the very same reason I'm personally convinced that the Dell wins out in this particular scenario. I can certainly understand the desire to purchase the ACD, it is beautiful, but for me that's not the top of my list of purchase requirements.

macmonster your a fool we didnt buy macbooks bc they were just expensive we bought them for a reason such as reliability power and other reasons in noway is buying a dell inspiron notebook comparable to a macbook. on the other hand the u2410 has the same panel and same specs as the apple cinema display plus a tons of connection options and ergonomics as well as being way cheaper with an unreal warranty...anyone else who thinks just because its not apple it sucks is a huge fan boy

I don't think the biggest problem is colour accuracy. The glass is like a mirror in which you can see almost every reflection. That makes it really hard on the eyes causing all sorts of eye problems and even headaches but some people don't even notice. It an also be troublesome if the reflection prevents you from seeing whatever is behind it on the screen. Makes it a bit difficult for graphics/design. On the other hand, there are actually people who like the glossy screen and do not want to have a matte screen any more.

Dell laptops have the same specs and same parts as Apple laptops. Apple displays are expensive for a reason. They are better made, more reliable and have better design. Well worth paying the extra money over some cheap rubbish Dell.

Snowboarder, do you have some feedback and any more pictures?

What can I say, it's an awesome monitor. I still look at some websites and am surprised by how different the colours appear from my previous monitor.

The backlight and panel are so good that , in daylight, a fullscreen black wallpaper makes the monitor look like it's switched off.

Im gonna stop being lazy and post my review and further pics tomorrow morning.
