That's the thing. Every phone more or less has made it a point to be in s big single button on the front at the bottom, it's exactly where we all expect the new Ines behind the screens to be!
Sticking it on the back in the middle is bad enough and unfamiliar, sticking it next to the camera is lazy and cheap and useless.
We'll have to see if AR takes off, it hasn't yet. VR is still dead too, people don't like these things I guess we don't see them as useful, like 3D with it's huge push from the manufactures, tons of TVs with it, now because no one cares or likes it they are making less and less and shifting to 4K or HDR etc.

So it's by no means a guaranteed success. And I still suspect people would prefer better photos and videos then AR. I slo don't believe many use iris scanners, because finger print sensors have been so dominant. But Samsung have put it in a few phones now so some must like it?

Not sure why you're repeating what I'm saying. Yes it's better to have the fingerprint sensor on the front.

I said nothing about VR.

There's no indication that 3D cameras would result in lower video/picture quality. The cameras would still work as normal cameras.

If the iPhone 8 rumors are true, it'll be more technologically advance than the S8 by a long shot. That's not even taking the A11 into account. It'll have the power of an iPad Pro in your pocket.

Disappointing. It looks like every other Android phone from the past 10 years. I guess theres really not much else you can do with a black monolith. oh well.

As someone who expects this to be pretty close to the final design, I can't understand why so many people are putting it down.

It's the first ever near enough full screen iPhone, hopefully with an under screen fingerprint sensor.

I think that's pretty impressive myself and I'm looking forward to purchasing one.

Some of the comments saying that this looks like an iPhone 7, or that it's boring I just can't comprehend.

Until we have the next major evolution with folding screens etc, this is near as good as it's going to get.

Apple shoud do something about its tenure - the iPhone 6 cloning philosophy is not only getting boring, but upright appalling.
We simply don't want those slippery round edges anymore, whether this industry lives from screens being smattered or not.
Jony Ive, come out of your sleeping hole and make that single, completely new design every 6 years.
If too much to ask, just duplicate the S8 design (big deal, as the OLED is already copied)
NO: that's not an suggestion towards stealing: it's market is now mature and ready to be globally leveraged and the Koreans should feel flattered that their design is chosen to create something "only Apple could do"

I wonder what new design people want, when the phone is just one big screen?

Apples philosophy is that good design, is design that doesn't get in the way. Now that our technology is so much better than back in the old bulky iMac CRT days, it's easier to reach that goal. When the camera technology is good enough, it will also get designed away.

I don't like the uncentered front or rear cameras and never will, they need to be centered.

. . . We simply don't want those slippery round edges anymore, whether this industry lives from screens being shattered or not. . .

Whilst I agree, I don't think the industry gives a toss about phone durability any more – unless you buy a specialised "tough phone" marketed at the construction industry etc

If they did, they would have edges made of rubber which would not only make them more "grippy" but would add to the durability.

You can also make rubber look attractive in an electronic device if you take the time to do so.

They would also have invested more time and effort in perfecting minimal/non-scratch plastic screens, again for durability.

I'll be shocked if either of these things happen any time soon.

I'm afraid you're right.
Which then again seems to add to my earlier suspicion that there is no real competition between the big behemoth companies, but merely an unnamed, cooperative non-agression pact.
In case of real competition, one of them would come out with a model that has the better/durable grip that you describe to obtain competitive advantage.

I do not understand, they are all the same and all more and more expensive. In short, nothing new! But people love iPhones!
