Not sure about the camera but if a fingerprint sensor will function under a screen then why not an ambient light sensor!

Because the fingerprint reader is supposed to use ultrasound so can sense through a thin solid object. An ambient light sensor needs to see the outside world so can't be behind something that isn't transparent. It could potentially be on the side I guess

Same deal with front facing camera - don't see any alternative for that

Speaker you could possibly have in the top edge which would still be close to your ear, or vibrate the screen near the top (Sony's new OLED TV does this).

Proximity sensor maybe could be under the screen

I imagine they'll continue to work on embedding or moving front facing sensors to reduce that top lip, but they have to start somewhere

Do they sit around every year thinking of new ways to make the camera even uglier? :p

hehe.. I'm pretty sure this cam is for 3d/AR.. Good cams bulge, thats life :) samsung, and everyone else, is in the same boat
Gosh, if that's accurate, that camera bump is UGLY! iPhones are too thin anyway, so why not just make it thick enough not to have an ugly bump? I'm sure the vast majority of users would love the extended battery life. Someone needs to put Ive into some kind of tech-anorexia recovery program.

The new iPhone 8 will already be thicker.. it will be a brick, compared to the competition, if they make it thicker - especially compared to S8, which is they main competition.

Why does it look like an iPhone 7? Is it because the leaks only have dimensions and the fakers are assuming the design language won't change dramatically? All the mock ups just seem to look like an iPhone 6/7 with a bumper on which is pretty ugly

Speaking of which - what'll we do for screen protectors if there is no bezel and the glass is curved again? Won't be able to cover the active area fully. And how about cases without covering part of the screen?

Once again, what do people want? It's a rectangle with a screen. You want a foldable triangle or what? This is as far as it's going to go with phones.
Fold-out/clap out designs have been around for 5 years now.
Indestructable and self-repairing materials also.
There are thousands and thousands of patents lying around, unused, defensive, to obstruct smaller companies from innovating. That's how mammoth companies divide the market and incapsulate your imagination into their walled garden of slowed-innovation.
Thanks for cooperating on behalf of them

The clunky comes from the poor computer imaging. He didn't design this well. It looks as if there's a case on it that has lips around the screen.

I don't mark random people's words. Especially when they have no backing behind their insane idea.

Mobile phone market is saturated. That's why nobody is really innovating.
You dont mark other peoples words? What does that mean?

I'm intruiged by this notion that Apple has declined since Steve's passing. Sales of phones and laptops have increased dramatically; the share price has gone through the roof; almost every metric has carried on improving except perception.

Phones are stagnating a little; you can only design a rectangular bit of metal and glass in so many ways; the biggest advances will now be in software and capabilities. AR kit is a perfect example.

And how would a VR phone work exactly?
The share price and the iphone sales are increasing due to one factor. Increase in population. Or rather, increase in accesibility to a larger number of population. Ie india and china.

The reason they have a large number of consumers to begin with is because the iphone users become sticky customers. By sticky i mean they get sucked into the apple ecosystem. This is first and foremost due to the terrific marketing and advertising of apple, and almost nothing to do with the iphones themselves.

The camera bulge is really annoying.

You put on a case and you barely notice it.
Honestly I don't really care about the look of the phone anymore. I used to run my iPhone 5 "naked" it felt and looked great, but since iPhone 6 I've been using cases because of the camera and the round edges. A case has more grip, protects the phone and makes it flat so I don't have to bother about the protruding camera.
What I do care about the phone are specs, battery life, and price. So if they can improve battery life keeping the phone thin (and that leads to the protruding camera) I'm fine with that. Currently I'm not happy with my 6s battery life, so let's see if iPhone 8 will have a battery life similar to the 7 or the 7+ (good)

i wish they'd differentiate themselves more and not be in the same league as the galaxy. mature tech or not, its possible.
see the mac vs pc 'race' back in mid 2000s.

i genuinely 'wanted' a mac...even though id been using computers for legit a decade already back then. and it surely wasnt because the mac had the best screen ratio, or the best processors for the price.

Differentiate other than how they already do how? The Galaxy and iPhone are similar but there are also stark differences. There is no confusing an iPhone with a Galaxy or vice versa. Consumers have made their choice as to which OS/ecosystem they prefer. Whichever they picked most are not changing. Ultimately both are handsets and functionary. What major features do you want exactly in a smartphone that isn't being offered now or that the rumored 8 won't bring?

Nearly fell asleep watching that video. Is it over? :D

so less attractive than the s8 and the essential phone..........shame
At this stage, seems that this will be very close to the final production version. Hate to say it but I agree with you 100%. Not very inspiring and the design, while new, seems stale. The industrial design of the latest Galaxy just looks sleeker and more refined.

A dollar to a donut says that's not what it will look like.
I'm suspecting the same.

I could be mistaken, but I want to recall that every iPhone release goes like this:
Rumors trickle in about some hardware aspect. That increases to aspects. Plural. A schematic releases, some case manufacturers start showing case designs, then someone releases a 3D rendering. Another few renderings surface. They all start to look similar. Then someone makes a physical mockup that seems pretty legit - based on the well- documented rumor mill. And then the Keynote comes and the actual device looks a bit different (if not quite different) than the mock ups.

Seems like that's the pretty standard release cadence. If I recall.

Looks great! It does look kind of chunky though.

Especially with iPhone 6 being 6.9mm, and 6S being 7.1mm. This one being 7.5mm...

Until battery tech improves drastically, chunky means a larger battery which is all good for me – I'd be happy if it went even thicker than it is.

My eyes and hands say a bigger screen in pretty much the same footprint as the 4.7" is a very big deal . . .

I agree, I think that's a brilliant upgrade.

I don't want to be carrying around a mini tablet in my pocket.

I agree this is one of the best designs we are going to get at the moment, but it's not, "as far as it's going to go".

A phone at folds out into a mini tablet would be the next evolution.

That requires both advances in foldable screen technology and better, slimmer battery tech.

At this point, Apple should just hold a keynote now to release the dang phone. Why wait? Over the years, the leaks all line up to be consistently accurate.

Although this has been true that the leaks have been proven pretty accurate over the last few years, the problem which may still delay the release seems to be more about how to implement the under screen fingerprint sensor

I agree, if they go with this it's essentially just keeping the iphone 6 design, which was boring from the beginning.

But, if you look at Apple designs since the iPhone 4, they've all sort of been duds if you ask me.
IPhone 5 was way better looking than 4 and lighter too

Every time one of these "dummy" phones come out before the launch... Tim Cook walks out expecting to surprise us with nothing more than exactly what we have already seen for months. I can't wait for it to happen yet again. There is literally zero surprise and delight anymore.
There never has been...
Remember iPhone 4 being lost in a bar. There's been leaks every year. Nothing new

So most of the rumours seem to indicate that the iPhone X will have a glass front and back and a steel band around the edge (of similar construction to the iPhone 4/4S but with rounded edges).

I can't tell from the video whether the back in this dummy model is in fact glass or aluminium in Jet Black.

If it is glass, I think this will be close to, if not exactly, the design of the release.

Reason being that wireless charging is easier through glass.
