The problem with attachments was a fairly specific problem - namely that there were quite a few attachments on the first page of one of the threads linked from several main site articles. That thread got considerable traffic - once I worked that out and removed those attachments it was fine.

I'll probably be looking at some way to improve it generally, but if nothing else, we just have to watch out when publicising threads like that :)

Little gripe/question/comment: The avatars.
The system is set to collect all the data for the changes every 3 hours and then apply them at that time, right? It makes sense but it doesn't seem to be working, at least not for me. I changed my avatar 12 hours ago and it shows in my profile but not on the pages I post. I did it again for the heck of it a while back too, no change.

It's not a big deal but it's slightly annoying and I wondered what was up with it.

I won't bore you with the technical details (unless you really want me to :p) but it's known issue during the very high load times (i.e. >4k users online). Will be working on that problem later, but for now they should be updating on the 3 hour schedule again.

I didn't expect them to hold up that well with that many users online, they loaded faster than I can usually get them to load, so congratulations.

P.S. is there any way to easily tell how many posts there were yesterday?

There were 8143 posts yesterday which is probably the record. We had 7398 posts on January 9th (Macworld SF 2007 - when the iphone was announced).

"Normal" posts per day appears to be somewhere around 2000-4000 on average, but this week its been much higher.

Well I do <3 techy talk but I won't pester ya for that, I know you're a busy man, especially lately.

Thanks for that. It's a small thing but it made me wonder and then I figured, 'hey, maybe they don't know it's behaving like that' so I posted. All sorted now, as it were. :)
