A 3.2MP camera (which is all you really need anyway) with a 3.5 inch LCD screen, quick and easy transfer facilities to your home computer, or Facebook via Wi-Fi, video capabilities with simple and easy to use video editing software, effectively for free in a device that is already fantastic to begin with? Seriously, who wouldn't want a camera in their iPod? It's Apple who is making the software, so it'll be great! I'll never be out somewhere without a camera again!

I think the camera is enough to convince me to trade up from my 2G iPod, but if it has a GPS in it, then it'll be everything I could ever want.

Well, except for the phone bit, removing yet another necessary object from my pocket, but I'd rather save $500+ and keep my cheap phone than spend it for one extra tiny little 50 cent silicon shard to make my iPod an iPhone.

Sigh, pity I have to wait for Friday to see if the new iPod Touch has what I want it to have. If so, I'll take a 32GB one thanks Apple!

IDK,I dont see them adding video capabilites. I see that as being the next thing they add in the 4g

The reason the holes are so big on the cases is because of the microphone, which is needed for video. There is no way Apple will not include it considering how easy to use and upload it is on the 3GS.

Next year will be GPS/Compass and anything major they add to the iPhone next year.

From what I understand, the mic on the 3G and 3GS are near the headphone jack. I could be wrong however.

How bad, why just apple makes the ipod touch an i phone, one way or the other the ipod touch will be the sam than an iphone.

That's true, which is why Apple would need to add a space for the microphone since the Touch and Nano do not have one.

Okay, am I the only one who doesn't particularly want a camera in their iPod?

I just don't get it. Seriously, how many people don't have a camera in their phone already (iPhone or otherwise)? You can get camera phones, admittedly not very good ones, for £20 these days on PAYG, so why would anyone need one in their iPod? The way I see it is this, most people who want music on the go carry around one of the following combinations:

well its simple.

  1. Many already own a cell phone and dont want a new one
  2. many don't like ATT
  3. Many do not want to pay for a 2 year contract.
see?

nano

I want to buy the new Nano online, I did this last time because my daughter wanted the exclusive red chrome colour with engraving. Delivery was prompt.

Its my son's birthday on Sep 10 and he wants the "new" nano. If it means waiting weeks, then I'll just get him an "old" nano, if there are any left

My question is: how soon after the Sep 9 media event will products become available to buy from the online apple :apple: shop (Australia) ??

Thanks!

Not sure about Australia, but i know in the USA, most of the time the iPods are available right away.

now if the iPods wont be in the local stores till the 10th or 11th, you could consider it a late birthday present

Sorry for coming so late into the discussion, but...

I think it's really interesting what they're doing with the iPod Touch. With every update it seems to be that they double the hard drive space so hopefully it'll be a 64GB. I'm totally stoked about the camera and I think the probability of placing the mic next to the lens is reasonable and pretty wicked.

But have you guys noticed within the last year or so, how big portable/mini video recorders are getting? I mean there's the Flip Mino/Ultra/HD and Kodak, Creative, etc. and more are running towards this market (btw, I'm not saying that Flip or any of the other companies made/started the original portable/mini vid recorders) Perhaps Apple is interested in joining the market.

As far as I'm concerned, the iPod touch may compete with devices like the Flip UltraHD or other HD mini-camcorders. Not sure if it's possible but maybe it'll have a camera that can record 720p video? Sure that's not HD but that's still pretty damn good for a handheld camera. And the iPod Nano will either be just a photo camera or be a low-end camcorder that can shoot VGA(or similar) resolution. Flash for those lenses may be a possibility but I think it's more likely that a mic will be there instead,

As much as I'd love to have native GPS functionality on my iPod touch, I highly doubt it. Mainly because of the fact that TomTom is making a dock for the iPhone and iPod touch that already has a gps receiver chip inside it. With that in mind, you really can't believe that Apple would even bother to put something in the iPod touch that the iPhone doesn't have (other than HD Space) But if I'm wrong, I'll be a very happy man. Unless if it's similar to the iPhone in which case, forget about it!

Oh, I almost forgot. I, obviously, am planning on getting one of these babies. I just hope that Speck, SwitchEasy, and a couple other companies will have some pretty rad cases for it. BTW, does anyone know of a good matte-finished screen protector for the iPod Touch (at least for 2nd Gen, I doubt they'll change the dimensions of the 3rd Gen iPod Touch from the 2nd Gen)?

INot sure if it's possible but maybe it'll have a camera that can record 720p video? Sure that's not HD but that's still pretty damn good for a handheld camera.

Technically, 720p is High Definition. 1080p is Full High Definition. It's silly, I know. What are they going to call the next step? "Overly Gorged High Definition"? "Oh My God I Need My Stomach Pumped High Definition"?

As much as I'd love to have native GPS functionality on my iPod touch, I highly doubt it.

I still retain hope due to the camera (geotagging) and the fact it's a teensy 50c part that won't affect battery life in the slightest, so why not?

Hello poster #393040540 who believes Apple designs their devices for YOU and YOU ALONE.

What a nasty post. Honestly, if you don't have anything nice to say...

If you read my post, you'll see that I was clearly asking why OTHER people would need a camera in their iPod because from my point of view I couldn't see the benefit. I was asking for the opinions of other people because I was curious as to whether there was a benefit which I'd missed from having a camera in an iPod. Isn't that the point of a forum? Certainly, I'd say it was more useful input to a forum than nasty little messages from nasty little people*.

Anyway, rant aside, thanks to everyone else who replied. I guess I'm getting on a bit now, and it's hard for us old-timers to think of an iPod as anything more than a media player. The new functionality (if it appears as people have suggested) could be very cool, it's just something outside my sphere of experience. Whether I'll use any of it or not remains to be seen.

Either way, since my poor iPod 5G got injured in a buttock-related incident, I'm excited to see what's going to happen to the Classic. If it gets a camera and App Store support - which I suspect will require a redesign for screen size and format - with no hit on price, I'll be a happy fellow. If it stays as a pure (or pure-ish) media player, then I'll still be happy! :)

Looking forward to the 9th... :D

* ...and oh my God, it looks like you took out an account on MacRumors just to post this. Sad.

Skimmed through this thread and saw that a number of people are scratching their heads over why Apple would put a camera in an iPod. For the iPod touch, the obvious reason to my mind would be games, clearly the biggest marketing angle for this device. There is now a new generation of games that incorporate camera input, so of course Apple wouldn't want their gaming device to miss this boat.

Then add to that all of the points already mentioned (Facebook, etc.), and it makes perfect sense that Apple would see the camera as a necessity.

@Alexknibb

The reason why they added cameras to the Touch and Nano is because they want to make more money and enter into different markets. It's as simple as that. Let me remind you that Apple is not some technological philanthropic organization, it's a business. And like all businesses, they're looking to grow and expand... Even if Apple is a giant. So for that reason, Apple is bringing their A-game (hopefully) to the handheld mini-camcorders market where Flip reigns.

That's right, Apple is planning to dethrone the King that is Flip Mino/Ultra and claim himself(or herself) AS KING!!!!

Ooh, I'd not heard of that Flip thingy before. That's pretty darn sweet, isn't it? I always thought the free engraving on iPods was cool (although I could never settle on a suitable song lyric for mine), but the level of customisation on those Flips is astonishing. Now, if THAT came along for the iPods and you could put your own picture on, I'd be hoiking out my credit card in a New York minute! :D

Having said that, Apple's too anally retentive about their design ethos, so I guess it'll never happen. :(

Thanks for the link. Another gadget for me to lust over!

In regards to the availability of the 5G iPod nano, 3G iPod touch and possibly 7G iPod classic: probably by 12 September in the retail Apple Stores, and one week later at other retail outlets.
