thanks
Good suggestions on the compressor and filter settings, this should help users who have trouble getting their ringtones to sound right on the tiny iPhone speaker. Summing the stereo to mono helps as well (but do this before compression and eq)

Oh wow! We can finally use mp3s as ringtones! Something I've been able to do on virtually ALL of my other cell phones for two frickin years! Oh wait, with Apple you have to use their proprietary crapware in order to "process" the music file and then import it into the locked down wonder of toy phones known as the iphone. Well golly gee! In all my other phones, all you have to do is upload a mp3 on a microSD card or on the phones memory and you can automatically just assign it as a ringtone. Really now, who really buys this locked down toy phone other than people who want to torture themselves? LOL. Not many if you look at the Q3 sales numbers by handset manufacturer.

Can't import MP3 into GB

I used to be able to drag homeripped MP3s directly into GB, but now I can't. What DID work, however, was converting an MP3 into an AIFF file in QT Pro. That file then imported easily into GB. Maybe it's a Tiger (10.4.11) thing? Hope to join the Leopard club soon (hopefully for xmas)... :)

I just don't get Apple nowadays.

Either this was poorly planned releasing this feature after tons of bad will was built-up in the base and the youger folks.

Or, this was their plan all along, and Apple care more about the media companies than us.
Or AT&T forced Apple to do this in the first place, and has finally relented (at least for Mac users). Remember, Steve said you'd be able to turn ANY song on your iPod/iPhone into a ringtone at MacWorld last year. AT&T must have put the keibash on that and demanded they charge for it. I think Apple somehow has convinced them to allow this for Mac users since we are such a "small" percent of the market. It's good to be small. ;)

thanks for the feedback guys. i never thought of converting to mono, ill try it out.

Draythor, if you wanted to you could use GarageBand to create ringtones then move them to a windows box. Use the Edit:Split command to split the mp3 into only the section you want for the ringtone (30s). Delete the excess sections then use Share:Export Song to Disk... command to export the ringtone to a file. Then rename the exported m4a to m4r. You can then send this to anyone. All they have to do is double click it and it will add to iTunes as a ringtone.

Alternatively you could just create your own ringtones in iTunes for Windows. Check this: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=439

Don't know what's up with that, but I am running 10.4.11 and I can drag MP3s straight into Garageband, from iTunes or the finder.

logic

anyone know if Logic Pro 8 has this function ? Someone who has Logic installed probably wouldnt install Garageband as well.

Still confused about why phone crap ends up on the "Mac" news page. Isn't there a forum for phone crap?

Or is this just to get ready for Apple going "all gadgets" and dropping support for computers?

You don't need to use any software at all. And I have been putting my own ringtones on the iPhone since the week after iDay. Maybe if you did your research you would not be so frustrated by features that already exist. Knowledge can go a long way to helping with your frustration.

GrageBand 3?

Well... this is a step in the right direction, but I don't think it's complete yet. I'm still stuck with Garageband 3 for the moment, so I'm out of luck with this I suppose, not to mention all of the Windows-using-iPhone owners out there who are out of luck on this. What Apple really needs to do is implement a free ringtone making feature into iTunes for either OS that can make a ringtone out of any audio file. Essentially the same thing but it works for a larger audience and makes it yet again a little more convenient.

I think this one was on the front page because it deals with a new realease of an iLife app on Macs whose most discussed new feature is import Ringtones to iTunes.

Next week: Apple offers .50 cent gift cards to the Apple Store for early ringtone buyers!

hahahahahhahahha

so our windows friends will have to pay .99 cents while mac users get free ringtones on their iphone?? I smell lawsuit coming quickly, and Apple isn't going to win

Sorry to dissapoint you my friend...I am still quite able to create the same FREE ringtones that you are. With the use of Audacity and ripping my CD's or in this case recording my daughters voice...I can create the same free ringtones that you can and do not have to wait for a GB update.

Ha ha, I was waiting for this. I have been reading and reading waiting to see a Windows user whine. Well, wake up, Apple has been too cordial for long enough giving Windows users the exact same experience with the iPhone and iPod and iTunes as they do the Mac users. Apple should implement more Mac only features for their products, this would give people more compelling reasons to buy a Mac and actually use it as a "Mac".

And before anybody (especially Windows users call flame me) Mac users are burned year after year with Windows only features in MS Office, MS Messenger and virtually anything MS makes for the Mac.

Sorry to burst your ego inflated bubble but I have been able to do this long before and while you were still whining about third party apps for your Mac. I can do the exact same thing you do with Garage Band with my Audacity which I've been using for years. Apple will never completely lock down their systems to all platform users, the same as the rest of the world will maintain some simblance of compatability with each other. Oh gee...is that parallels you have installed on your computer so that you can game and use windows apps?

Oh you thought I was teasing? Nope, not at all, just informing. But stay tuned after Macworld there will be much more Mac only stuff to come for Apple's products, they will make certain there are many more reasons to switch to the Mac, believe me, Apple will make sure you move off of Windows one way or another. :D

You are so dreaming and really you should treat all computer users the same...each platform has its merits and its problems. One is not better then the other, only in parts. I seem to recall most recently a 7.3.1 QT update that is doing alot of serious damage to Mac users only so don't go into the Mac is better...they all have problems. And in NO WAY am I saying windows is better either...it deffinetly has its shortfalls and I won't even consider Vista until its fixed, but XP is awesome and I have no issues what so ever.

Is it possible to create a custom ringtone and port it to a windows machine?

Draythor...it is very possible to create your own ringtones.

1) You will need Audacity (its free) or similiar software that you may already have that will allow you to make clips of songs.
2) Find any song or sound that you like (i recorded my daughter's voice saying "Daddy You Have a Phone Call") and clip it to 30 seconds or less and save in the MP3 format.
3) Drag to iTunes and convert your sound clip to the .AAC format.
4) Drag to your desktop, make sure that you can view file extensions and change the .m4a to .m4r extension and drag and drop back into iTunes in the ringtone folder.
5) Sync your phone and bingo....new ringtone

The only thing different between this and GB is it now automatically sends it to iTunes for Syncing for you...."IF" you can update to the new GB

Good Luck to ALL platform users and enjoy your new FREE Ringtones

That's funny. I couldn't do this with my Samsung A900, sanyo VM4500, sidekick v1, and I don't remember being able to do it on my Treo 600 or Treo 300.

Read below!

EDIT: HAHAHA, looking at your previous posts, that's all you do is troll these forums!! You've been doing it constantly for over a year! Wow kid, get a life!

hey, can anyone point me in the direction of a good website to get short audio clips from? like from tv, movies, radio etc?

thanks

Not working for me.

Not working. Help? I know Garageband. I'm using 4.1.1. I record myself saying "RING," set the cycle, then Send to iTunes (7.5). Song pops up in iTunes, plays. I hit sync on my 1.1.1 phone and get a notice telling me the ringtone wasn't copied as it wasn't playable on that iPhone. iPHone is unmolested at this point.

Thoughts?

The requirements are that you have iPhone with software version 1.1.2 or later.

God I'm dim. Thanks. Either time for me to molest my 1.1.1 phone or commit to 1.1.2 (yeah I know there's a rollback as well).

I don't get it.

I've tried many times to create a ringtone in garage band, but when I export it to itunes, instead of being of lenght of 40 seconds, it gets chopped to only 7 seconds. What am I doing wrong?

There's little yellow bars at the top when you bring the track into GB. They are the markers that control the length of the clip you then export.

There is a workaround for those on 1.1.1. Export the ringtones from GB as usual then just convert them to MP3 and then put them in your iTunes as a playlist and sync it with your iPhone. Then use Send song off the Installer to set them as ringtones.

Wont Export as a ringtone!>?

I'd appreciate it if someone could help me out with....

After I've changed my song into the length I want my ringtone to be---and i try to export---It exports as a SONG into my LIBRARY as an .aif file i believe---I've looked at a few tutorials that have the option to share>Send RINGTONE to itunes.......

I have the latest updates of both itunes and garage band..

it creates a playlist titled with me as the artist puts the tracks on them....

any ideas?
thanks....
