You sure about that? I'm pretty sure I just dragged and dropped the MP3 file of my desired ringtone into a GB track. Then I edited, set up the loop and created a ringtone.

I'm pretty sure I initially created an MP3 file and used that as my source.

It doesn't let you import an MP3 from the desktop, I never tried dragging one from iTunes.

So...

iLife doesn't have features you want = You didn't buy it
iLife adds a feature you want = You still don't want to buy it

So not adding features you want AND adding features you want has no affect on you either way. What motivation does Apple have to do anything for you, then?

You call adding iPhone ringtone exporting a feature of the new iLife? That's laughable. I don't recall Apple marketing that as a feature when iLife '08 was released.

I purchased an iPhone already. There's no reason why a feature such as custom ringtones should only be limited to purchasers of iLife '08. I'd feel the same way if I didn't have a Mac and only used Windows.

That's like restricting a feature on iPod's to only Mac users with iLife '08. iLife has nothing do with the iPod/iPhone and the two shouldn't be tied together.

Ultimately, it's not that big of a deal but I am a little miffed.

maybe its just a liitle bonus for those who have got it??
and I have LOL

Why the hell would we pay an extra dollar if apple just gave us a free solution?
It's only a free solution if you already own an unprotected copy of the song (say, from the CDs you ripped). If you don't own the song and the only copy available is a protected AAC version at the iTunes Music Store, you're going to have to buy the song and then pay for the ringtone.

And there will always be a lot of people who will be willing to pay extra for the ability to do it in one easy step, along with people who will never bother to learn about this feature of GarageBand.

Will these custom ringtones sync with cell phones other than the iphone?

If your phone will support MP3's, you can. Instead of choosing Send Ringtone to Itunes, choose Send song to Itunes. In the next box that comes up, choose MP3 encoder from the "compress using" list. Now comes getting it onto your phone. My phone has Bluetooth and I can use the Browse Device option on the Bluetooth menu on my Mac, using that I navigate to where my phone stores ringtones, hit send, then browse to my iTunes library and find the file I want. Oh, and I did find a way to use protected songs, but I'm not telling!!! :D

What can Windows user do?
Switch to Mac?

Naturally. I think its rather amusing, but I'm pretty sure theres going to be a few people flaming Apple about this soon. Then again, the Zune doesnt work with Macs

My current ringtone I made myself in Garageband.... about a year ago? Just put it onto my phone, selected it as my ringtone... funky eh?

Getting lost in all of this... is that fact that simply RENAMING your .m4a file to .m4r and double-clicking on it, now adds it to your ringtones again as of firmware 1.1.2 and iTunes 7.5. Make sure its under 40 seconds, and you're probably golden. GarageBand's announcement simply cements support for the method, and dispells all doubt that this will be a'changing anytime soon.
I take it this only works with 1.1.2?
A thousand times yes.
Does this require 1.1.2?
:( Upgrade... your... phone.

Read the ****ing thread.

And I lol'd @ all those whining Windows users. Can I say "too ****ing bad"? Well, I just did.

yea, I've upgraded to 1.1.2 a while ago and I'm using Windows... not a big deal really, but after MacWorld things will be different :)

Wow, I was so excited to see this. It's about time they finally realized that this whole game was stupid. Plus now it gives people another reason to update to iLife '08 if they hadn't already. :D

Smart move Apple! Feel my love.

this means that I can put the theme song from Buffy the vampile slayer on my iphone! Sweetness ( you can even buy it from itunes)

:)

Or if you're like me, you can make ringtones from the entire Nerf Herder catalogue!

Nerf Herder Rocks.

This isn't an iphone feature. it is a garageband feature. therefore, if you want the newest feature of garageband... you must have the newest version of garageband.

It isn't limited to iLife '08, this just automates the process. If you do a forum search you'll find a number of posts detailing how to edit out a section of a song, convert to m4a, rename to m4r and put onto the 'phone. You can edit the song with any number of free tools like Audacity. Easy, and works on Windows too for those stuck on the dark side....

I figured they would go to something like this eventually. Does anyone know if it works with any song or just with stuff created with GarageBand?
