This was one of the most wished-for features back in the Napster days, considered a Holy Grail of music search once upon a time. I can't stand Google, and their Cyberdynesque tendencies, but every now and then they give us something useful in return for all our privacy and metadata. Next up -> The Rosetta Stone universal translator that several companies are working on.

Or Apple. People seem to forget about Apple.

Google and Facebook will be multiple times worse.

Although I prefer Shazam, SoundHound had this feature quite a few years ago. I was wondering why they got rid of it. But I doubt it has anything to do with Google because it was truly that long ago. Back then I was especially impressed with the technology.

I'm not a big google fan, but this is another reason why Apple Siri will never catch up to google assistant and their variants.
really? You do realize for years you have been able to ask Siri what Song is playing, then a few years ago the added asking with a few lyrics of the song. Google’s assistant could not do this. Remember even playing a song or opening apps by voice came years later on Android. They were just standard features to us. Heck my first Mac from 2001 could open files and do task by voice.

So all of you who can only hum in French, you're screwed.

Seriously?

The results are in English. And obviously the actual songs that are returned would reflect the region.

I finally managed to get it to work.
It's a dam hard song to do with your mouth due to the speed.
Humming it is a non starter, and whistling likewise.

I managed to get it to guess the right song by kinda singing, da da da da, da da da da, da, da, da, da, da, da etc, and it got it finally.

As stated in the article, you have to hum.

Yeah SoundHound was pretty amazing at it, hummed the Axel Foley theme pretty badly and it still got it. This was like in 2017 or 2018. Good to see others doing it too.

Modimi or whatever it was called used have a feature like this, and then soundhound bought them out about 6 or 8 years ago and messed up the app. The feature doesn't seem to work as well as it used, but maybe that's my rose tinted memory. I just seem to recall it being more accurate. Hmm..
Even better than Shazam.
I sometimes found myself listening to a song and unable to shazam it now, I just need to remember the drive of the song to find it later, dope

Doesn't Sound Hound, Shazam and any sound search app need the same access?
SoundHound has had this function for years. If Shazam is supposed to, I’ve never been able to get a hit using it. Too bad that’s the one Apple bought.

Everyone’s playing catch up. I could hum to my iPhone 4 when it came out, with Sound Hound and it was pretty accurate. I’m actually surprised it took Google this long to implement this feature.

It’d probably work fine - that’s a pretty distinct song. It has no lyrics so it’s dependent on the melody being unique.

Soundhound did this forever ago.

What I’ve always wanted is an app where you hum to it, and then it doesn’t just identify the song, but it starts playing the song, fading in in sync with exactly where you are. This would be a magical feeling party trick - movies and TV shows have done it many times so it’s not like it’s an original thought on my part - I’m just surprised nobody has done it yet.
Pitch it to SoundHound! They’ve had the humming/whistling feature for literally years. I bet they could implement Apple Music even deeper into their app to do just that!

I know I’ve always been in the minority (and it doesn’t bother me to just ignore these apps) but I’ve never found myself in a situation that a song is playing or that I recalled a tune that I wasn’t able to conjure up some of the lyrics. Then a quick google search always works.

Now, I understand some music doesn’t have lyrics, and while I listen to a lot of classical and instrumental music myself, I’ve never wanted to play a particular song in that genre (Or if I do it’s because I know it very well and therefore know the name) Usually it’s more of a feeling or tempo I’m looking for in that case...

🤷‍♂️

this sounds good
