The first one was a bit over the head of the typical consumer...I doubt most people know what GUI stands for, let alone what C++ is.

The last was definatley best; the skate stickers and emo comment totally made it. It was funny for teens who are like "hey theres a guy covered in stickers" and it was funny for the parents who laugh at their children's emo music. Sucess!

Could be a good thing. Perhaps it will associate "GUI" and "C++" with difficulty since most people may not know what that means, and relate that to a PC....?

heh, I thought I heard "PC" say that, but wasn't sure. :p

The gift exchange one was pretty funny to me, but the other's weren't so much. I didn't even know what C++ GUI was clearly. I knew it was some tedious Windows thing, but I didn't know for sure.

I saw one last week where they were both in a box wrapped as a Christmas present. I don't remember the details but I think they were talking about being given as gifts. As PC guy is talking, Mac guy is loaded onto a hand truck by a delivery guy and hauled away to be shipped to someone.

I saw this one too! Why is it not on the Apple site? I think it was better than all 3 of these... by the way, I think the "delivery man" was Santa's elf, as far as I can remember... It was funny. :)

Good job Apple! Focus on the consumer/youth market. Because of the iPod this is where they are going to see the most success right now.

Tell the parents this is what their kids want (most likely the kids do want an Apple if they have an iPod). Get the college students to get macs.

Everyday I see so many people with new macbooks on campus. (and people with their massive brick pc laptops they have to plug in during lecture just to keep the battery from dying  )

There is no sense targeting the professional market right now. That market has a much slower turnover than the consumer market. Old tech people are pretty much locked into the systems they are using. When the new fresh IT people are hired fresh out of college and they own macs..they will at least consider macs for new, future systems.

Anyways, enough of my opinion, I think these are just some more great ads from Apple.

Sooooo....all those nay-sayers I have been hearing on podcasts....stating that people see Justin Long as a smug typical-Apple person.....and stating that they arent surprised that Apple dropped him from their ad campaigns....

Need some salt for that crow pie? *chuckles*

Just saw another new ad not too long ago. Just cought the tail end of it though. I only saw the "PC" talking about going to listen to emo music & had weird sitckers from tons of emo bands all over his suit. Haven't seen mention of this on any other site though

He had about 3 emo band stickers on him, only Anarchy Skates logo.
It was pretty good, but the normal ones are better.

Apple seems to be really pushing the iLife suite of apps. It gets a quick mention in word, but unless you've used it before, it won't stick in the minds with general consumers.

The declining PC sales bit is not really typical Apple, but there's nothing like suggesting it to get momentum rolling for Mac sales. :)

luv ya bunches! xoxoxox

I was able to view the Gift Exchange ad on Apple's site, but the other two cause my IE7 (PC) to crash. :( Something about a problem with a plug-in.

I'll try again on my MBP when I get home.

games

Perhaps PC should start talking games and see what apple says. The ultimate gaming system is what those "kids" have. Let's see apple do that for a change.

Unlisted Get a Mac ad

My wife keeps telling me about the ad with both of them in Christmas boxes with bows on them. Her description to me was "Ok they are both inside boxes for Christmas and they are talking back and forth and someone comes and takes the Mac box and the PC box is still talking like the Mac is still there". Does anyone have a link to this one?

I saw meant for work as a jab at the Zune. I liked all 3, but probably gift exchange the best. "I've been eying that myself" was a hilarious line.

You can work out C++ and GUI from the context of the advert.

Basic message:

PC: "Nerdy"
Macs: "Cool"

Although they went about it in a more subtle manner.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but emo kids (i.e. the "tortured artists") are the ones using Macs the most out of a particular music demographic.

At least where I'm from, the Mac is becoming more of an artsy trend... which pisses me off because the artsy whiners piss me off.

Either way, I saw it as a sort of backwards market alienation.

Not good

I wanted to reply on the ads a long time ago, since i wanted to buy a mac and while i 'look kinda' like the mac guy. i thought these ads were awesome. But i use windows since 3.1 and do i look like a dull office worker? NO
In the meanwhile i got a mac, and seeing the new ads its just not clear to me.
While i already did alot of reseach about the macs, it was easy to understand the windows vs mac virus ad.
My question is: whats apples target audience??
If they want to make windows users switch to mac, it might work. But people that are relatively new to pc's, dont know terms like spyware, c++, etc etc.
Apple should concentrate on ads promoting MAC, and not by bashing windows.
I keep calling it windows because thats what this is about. its not pc vs mac. a mac is a pc, a personal computer, a computer for your own. macs dont work on the G3 G4 etc processors so the only differents are the OS and design.
What i hate is that they keep ****** with windows like it can't do photoshop, or listen to music, and only consist of work work work! what crap is that! i love my windowspc its stable, im creative and yes programms do crash once in a while.. but so does stuff on my macbook.
I know there a lot of kids out there that love mac, and suddenly hate windows because mac is cool. Thinking oh, its from apple so lets not bash it.
Bashing windows in there ads were oke in the first round. Now lets move on!

Agree with the above poster. Yet again new ads don't tell anything new about Mac to the consumer, same old bashing of the windows platform. The difference is that less and less people having issues with Windows based PCs and these kind of ads look like desperate attempts to discredit another platform, rather than a commercial about Mac.

Take the very last one: kids bother PC with the creative staff, while Mac is there waiting with the iLife for them. Maybe you can reinforce a pipe dream of a Mac addict, but reality is that kids can do a lot more on a PC than they can ever do on Mac. Actually, today's Mac geared more towards work applications, like Photoshop, while home PCs are geared for play and creative staff.

I owned a G5 PowerMac, and now a MacBook. My brother, who's a CGI animation major, couldn't use my Mac cause it wouldn't run 3DMax. I actually sold off PowerMac because I couldn't play any of the latest games, and when walking into CompUSA I'm surprised how little there creative applications such as Home Modeling, Cooking etc for my MacBook compared to the PC - so it leaves me with a pretty Mac OS and iLife to look at - which is fine for what I do on a notebook...

Obviously part of Apple's target audience is the next generation; the Mac guy is hip, young, and down to earth (PC guy tends to position himself more straight and awkward). But I think a big part of it too is the home user base; people who post to this forum are generally at least saavy enough to get around their machines (and use creative programs like Photoshop), but I've seen a lot of people who recoil like they've been burned if their computer gives them an error message. Obviously, Macs aren't perfect, but having built-in options/software for making your own photo books, music, and movies makes it much simpler for these people. Also, a huge chunk of windows market share comes from offices and corporations; there, a computer is meant for work, and the OS is tied to it. I think Apple's plug at PC=Work is tied to this notion, more than just that pcs are boring/uncreative. I know when I come home from work, the last thing I want is something else to remind me of it; a mac computer could be a nice change after a day on the PC. That said, I love some of the ads (the gift was good, others not so much), but I think it's a creative marketing scheme.

...less and less people having issues with Windows based PCs

That's because Windows XP has grown up. Yes, the bionic abomination of past OSes, service packs and other last-minute add-ons has *FINALLY* matured to a more stable state. Unfortunately, Microsoft is releasing Vista in a few weeks (or a couple days for businesses).

Tell me in 3 months that people aren't having issues with their Vista PCs.

If it wasn't for the age-old "playskool" interface and lack of an intuitive user-experience, I'd recommend Windows users not to upgrade. I still won't until Vista Service Pack 1 rolls out.

Do the commercials say that Macs can't be used for programming?
Some viewers might conclude that, but anybody actually interested in programming probably knows better, and the impression that PCs are too complicated is the bigger message.

Some programmers of course do indeed do GUI development in C++ on their Macs, and the ad was actually more accurate than if it had been a C# book, which Mr. PC would probably have been more interested in. But that's not the point of the ad.

I also doubt anybody will conclude that you can't balance your checkbook on a Mac -- although there have been problems with Calculator.app!

I could do without those ads but i don't really think they were AWFUL. The reason why Apple doesn't advertise to the high-tech market like those who would run IT departments, business computer needs, etc, is not only so that Apple doesn't scare away the core market, but many of those people already have formed opinions about Apple. With the ads they are trying to bring in a larger consumer market, but that doesn't make the programming base or whatever any more forgotten. They know about the products and/or know what to look for spec. wise whereas a consumer may not, thus more ad focus is on them.
