I am having a hard time finding a great use case for myself for this product at our house, but I can also see me wasting my money and buying it.

Since nobody (except Apple) knows what it is at this point, I'd be optimistic and wait until it's released before writing it off. Based on history I'm expecting to be positively surprised.

I can only think of three released products that really flopped. iPod Sox, iPod HiFi, and the PowerMac G4 Cube. But that was way back and occurred under different leadership.

I wonder how serious they are going to get about this and not half way down the line abandon this market.

Will be a great kitchen counter top TV if the OS isn't neutered.
Watching TV on a square display? Even 4:3 would require black bars or a cropped picture.

Touché

That said, and being serious, they could charge $149-299 for a "band"

It would be rightly seen as overpriced, but I'd give it a go honestly
Brace yourself for references to the iPod Shuffle and the jokes around it ;).

If anything, I might be interested in either a ring or a bracelet with a way bigger display than the Watch. A band without display to me would be like the worst of both worlds (display-less, yet „occupying“ a wrist).

No thank you, I’ll stick with Alexa
Good luck with that!

Rumor has it that Amazon is internally challenging its Alexa ecosystem, as it did not generate the expected uptick in sales and thus might be axed eventually. Alexa devices are said to be internally seen as Sales boosters, not a dedicated home automation platform.

Besides - I’m stupid enough to trust Apple more than Amazon when it comes to data privacy.

Depends how you define „flop“. The Cube was a huge hit for Apple’s design capabilities reputation. And afaik it is the only Apple product that never officially reached EOL (but instead had production suspended indefinitely).

That’s how you build that ever-so-subtle brand image of “being different”, which helps building a loyal followership and subsequently helps generating Sales.

Too bad that the current company lead seems far too sober to pull off a similar marketing trick these days.

DISCLAIMER: I still own a Cube and still like the design - both visually and mechanically.

Until Siri becomes great not buying any Siri product
I only use Siri to control smart home devices and timers. The average person isn’ trying to use it in ways most people online want to. I find Siri more reliable for my use case then Alexa and Google home.

I remember way back in 2010 when Steve Jobs introduced iPad. And many people characterized it as "Just a big iPhone. Who asked for that?"
I thought it was unfortunate that the iPhone released before the iPad, looking back. Because if it was the other way around, people would have been astounded at the brand new touch tablet ideal for casual content consumption, then later been ecstatic that it could be miniaturized as a small phone to take everywhere.
Eventually people did warm up to the iPad after the mocking died down. But since then I think large phones supplanted what iPads were supposed to be, but that’s another whole thing.
Point being I think this illustrates how our opinions as humans are incredibly fickle and easily swayed by what we see first rather than thoughtfully and objectively observing the bigger picture.

Im really excited about the security cameras on the outside of the house , with window sensors included. Im tired of paying Vivint $40 per month.
How will a screen on a homepod work and noy interfere with sound.

If you’re beating a dead horse, you are.? Too each their own

“It’s our best HomePod ever and we think you’re gonna love. It will be available from just 1,999$”

I would love to have a HomePod in my kitchen while cooking if it had the functionality of doing video calls and watching movies while offering superior sound quality. For the first, it should not be restricted to FaceTime, for the latter it should offer Netflix or Plex. So finally we end up with an AppStore - without the possibility of installing 3rd party apps the display would be largely useless.

I disagree. Everyone has agency in their lives, and with that the power to choose better tech from better companies at will.

If Samsung/HP/LG/etc develops tech and an ecosystem that better meets my needs, I'd drop Apple instantly. So far I haven't seen that. All of my Apple products are outstanding and work very well together.
In fact they have better offerings. The problem is that Apple doesn’t allow them to integrate into Apple’s lock in system. Luckily the EU is looking into that and may force Apple to play nicely with others 😊

I’d love to have something like this, I won’t buy an Echo show for my bedroom because of privacy concerns. I had one a few years back and it would randomly play music in the night. Also something where I can view my photos from the photos app taken on my iPhone (like a photo frame) would be great.

Are you saying Samsung et al would prefer to be integrated into the Apple Ecosystem? What is wrong with Android?

Apple have complied with EU regulations. Why would the EU want Apple to make iOS open source?

It is unclear how much the screen-equipped HomePod would cost, but Apple is seemingly aiming for a reasonable price.

Lol at Apple’s definition of reasonable price.
Given the device will have just a 6" square screen, it's intended use case, and deliberately limited tile-like home utility OS, expect it to be "cheap" for an Apple product, as basically no one who gets one gets one without adding on two, three, or more cameras and maybe a speaker option too. Some will buy a few for their home, two on walls (hall entrance, and one centrally located) and one for the kitchen or bedroom with a speaker with a few cameras peppered around. That adds up!

Expect the display device by itself to cost max $269. It's severely limited, but deliberately so.
