Meanwhile, three new Mac mini configurations are also listed - priced at $499, $599, and $699. As noted by ThinkSecret, Apple does not presently offer a $699 Mac mini model.

My geek sense is tingling. I think I'm about to get my first Apple since my ][e. Dang. I just wish my $150 Microsoft settlement check would come in the mail. I don't think there would be anything sweeter then putting money from MS into an Apple purchase. hehehe. :D I can't wait to hook a Mac mini up to my new 24" widescreen 2405. :D :D

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO if this rumor is true i think that apple should have gone with an even CHEAPER version of the mini rather than a more expensive one. or offer the ones they do now, but at a SUB 500 level

mini with more ram at current price range, airport and extreme included at higher price point. i hope i hope i hope. i want the cheaper one with more ram, i might have to buy it!!!

how obsolete are the powerbooks gonna be?

as obsolete as they are now. Nothing gained nothing lost. why hold back other products on a product that is in the pipeline to get updated next year anyways. Face it guys PowerBooks in '05 are a lost cause.

Ok, faster CPU, faster FSB, faster RAM, higher RPM HD, more standard RAM, possible superdrive, better GPU, mini-DVI (dual monitor setup, not simply mirroring). The 12 inch PB still is a better buy. We could also make the assumption that when the new PBs come out they will either have the features that it's bigger brothers have, especially if we are going to make the assumption that the new iBooks are going to be better then the current PB.

WOW new iBooks. I'm for sure getting one now!...wait...Maybe not..I don't like the white -- too girly.

too bad they're not black (same material though)

Agreed. That would completely kick ass.

Dude you can't get any cheaper then what they have in the Mini without hitting performance. As it stands the mini is cutting corners it shouldn't be. I mean a 4800 drive vs. a 5400? That's almost criminal.

With all due respect iEric, are you nuts? Black is for dime-a-dozen pc's.

"Is that an hp or a dell or a sony...or is that an apple?" I SHUDDER at the thought!

New part numbers (for new models) doesn't necessarily mean the existing model(s) couldn't be reduced in price does it?

If you all want a cheaper computer, get some cheap PC. Well no, actually, don't; just pay $500 for the low end mini. You are buying a Mac, you know it won't be as inexpensive as you want it to be...

...There's no way the 12" model gets replaced by a 14" model. I can see the 12" getting replaced with some sort of 13" widescreen or something, but there's no way they bump the larger 14" models down (IMO) and get rid of the more portable unit.

Agreed. Some of the other threads have noted that the 12" ibook outsells the 14" by a huge margin. Apple won't punt on the 12", unless (possibly) its for a 13" widescreen.

I can't see a glossy black iBook with the glowing Apple logo ever being mistaken for Dell or Sony crap.

why get a widescreen powerbook when the ibooks are just as good for a few hundred cheaper...

The powerbooks will be quite obsolete for a short period my guess is that they will not be updated untill macworld paris but when they are updated it is possible that they will be getting G5!! I imagine that after IBM's recent anouncement of a dual core chip and of a low power high efficiency low power chip aka portable G5 that apple could finally be getting the powerbook G5 this is of course assuming that apple's contract with IBM allows them a supply of the new chips because they certainly wont be allowing apple any if they arent being held by an existing contract.

no.
new products have new product codes.. /a /b /c on the end of the model code is a revision letter.. for bug fixes and alike

Our day has come!!!

I knew there was a reason I've waited for months!

Ok, but seriously, I'm just glad they are updated with something, it doesn't really matter what they put in it, I'll just be happy that it isn't the same thing I could have gotten last fall

Now what my new 12" (or 13" wide screen) will be
1.33 G4
512 RAM (256 on board)
40 GB HD
BT and AE
Ripple capable GFX

I think that'll do

the (Optimistic) waiting begins

Yeah, but the PowerBooks still look better. ;). The WOW factor of a PowerBook has not been beaten by any manufacturer.

The 12" iBook and PowerBook models are the exception as they are both based on the 12" iBook. You get a little more with the PowerBook version but not much. They should have had a 13" widescrren PowerBook a long time ago. Since Apple no longer discloses sales data for individual product lines it probably doesn't matter if the gap between the iBooks and PowerBooks has narrowed. All they have to say now is "We sold X number of laptops".

What a disasterous outcome that would be...

No wonder the 12 inch is more popular - I think the 14 inch is possibly the ugliest, most ungainly laptop Apple has ever produced. I need a new iBook, but if that became the only iBook - that would be the end of 20+ years of Macs for me.

Please, please, please, a totally new 13 inch widescreen is what I need.

Think Secret sux. It's become so unreliable as of late. Same with Apple Insider.

I don't agree-- there have not been many rumors, thats for sure-- but Think Secret has still been right on the updates that have come this year. Appleinsider has always had less info, but what it has had has been correct. The "ibook is coming" rumors they have had have been correct as well-- ie "in the next few months," etc.

Good, then there's still a chance (albeit a very slight one) of the existing low-end Mac Mini configuration going to $399 or $449.

One thing to consider, is that wasn't the initial hope of the Mac mini to be for switchers? I'm guessing most soon-to-be switchers (including myself) won't spend $699 on a Mac for their first one.

If true, I bet it's in response to Mac mini demand from current Apple users for a more powerful model.
