The 12" iBook and PowerBook models are the exception as they are both based on the 12" iBook. You get a little more with the PowerBook version but not much. They should have had a 13" widescrren PowerBook a long time ago. Since Apple no longer discloses sales data for individual product lines it probably doesn't matter if the gap between the iBooks and PowerBooks has narrowed. All they have to say now is "We sold X number of laptops".
I hope they don't make the 12" powerbook any larger. I am waiting for the revision as I want as much power as I can in the smallest enclosure. Using a 12" powerbook between work and home and connecting to a 17" lcd at either location would be great!

No chance of a $399 Mac mini. That's too bad. It's overpriced at $699 no matter what the configuration.

Do you guys think the 12 inch ibook will have spanning? Or at least allow for higher resolution when connecting to an LCD? I want to make a switch but I woiuld hate to have 1028 res hooked up to my 19inch lcd.

I disagree. If the new $699 model is has more features skewed towards media center usage (eg. digital audio in/out) I think it would be money well spent.

so I just literally opened up my new mini yesterday (ordered last week), am I pretty much screwed assuming this rumor is true? What are apple's policies on something new coming out this close to a purchase of an older product?

Well, Apple has not done anything in the 3 or so years to stop the iBook/iMac spanning hack. I think that while it won't be supported by Apple to keep some difference from the PowerBook line, it should still be there.

Yeah, but the PowerBooks still look better. ;). The WOW factor of a PowerBook has not been beaten by any manufacturer.

Powerbooks are now outdated and will be as long as they have that old G4 chip in them.

Hurry up, Apple! Now that IBM has succeeded in producing lower power 970 chips, make the move to the G5 so we can see a respectable pro-end laptop again!

You have 10 days between when you bought it and when Apple releases a new model. They either credit you the difference, or you can upgrade to a new model. I think you could return the model you have otherwise (I've heard up to 15 days), but you have to pay a 15% restocking fee. It's on their site somewhere, Google it.

So where's Mood in all this? Did his head just explode or what? Maybe he bought that Dell or whatever and he's busy kicking himself. :p

You know they're moving to Intel right?

Well, yes, but right now, I think a lot of current Mac users would like a new machine but are hesitant to invest BIG $$$ in a new machine (especially with an integrated display like the iMac G5) before the x86 machines are released. A slightly more powerful Mac Mini would certainly fill that gap well.

I had three Macs prior to the x86 announcement. I unloaded my iMac G5 and 12" iBook on eBay (at a profit, I might add) and standardized on my Mac Mini while in 'wait and see' mode.

you did this because of the intel announcement :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
talk about the sky is falling. if i needed a machine i would by a G5 in a heart beat. i'd even buy the current ibook. these are great machines and would last an easy five years. the ibook is for general computing anyway, so its not like i would need to wait for the best processor to hit the ibook line. in short, if someone needs a computer, buy buy buy. if you dont and are buying a new system not for necessity but for novelty, then i would wait.

still, good move since its what you want and you made a profit.

You are not "screwed" - this is the natural way that things work in the computer world. Enjoy your new machine completely, even if one 5 times as nice comes out tomorrow for the same price.

Why must we always compare? It's strange how comparison keeps us from enjoying things like we should...

In any case, mini updates have been anticipated for a few weeks now, although it has been hard to say how long it would be, as the product is in its first incarnation.

oh I realize i'm not screwed,...but i actually waited about a month before deciding a new mini was not forthcoming anytime soon,...and the day after I receive it, the announcement of a potential "newer" mini has me a bit disappointed...

the main thing that would kind of suck for me is if the newer version has a 64mb graphics card, dual display support, and supports more ram, those are probably the main things i'd want most...I don't suspect any small increase in hd speed or cpu speed would make that huge of a difference...so we'll have to see...

sorry for the use of "screwed",...i'm not that upset or anything, i'm actually very happy right now with my purchase :)

No, really? Fill me in...

But in all seriousness, why do you believe this would prevent the G5 PB from coming out? In case you haven't heard, the first Macs with Intel processors won't be out until 2006, and I highly doubt that Apple will leave a G4 in the PB that long, especially when the "consumer-level" iMacs have had a G5 for nearly a year.

The G5 Powerbook has been long designed (probably over a year ago) and has been waiting for a lower power chip. I doubt that they would throw away all that investment of energy now.

Yes, Apple is moving to Intel, but the G5 is not going away any time soon.

I'm glad someone mentioned this. The same applies to the iBook. A 13" model isn't necessarily an improvement. It's a trade off in some ways.

Also, in the iBook vrs Powerbook comparison, the 12" Powerbook is about 10 or 15% smaller than the iBook, and lighter. A lot of people miss that in the comparison, but it's pretty noticable if you put them side by side.

I like the suggestion of "good" and "better" 13" widescreen models; that'd be a really nice pair of choices.

A co-worker of mine is seriously in the market for a new iBook in the next week or two, so I've advised him to hold off a bit hoping that this rumor, which sounds solid, is true. Considering that he was ready to buy the current lineup, he should be happy to see any kind of boost in features.

In fact, that'll make the 2nd iBook switcher I know this year, and the 3rd person I work with to switch from a PC to an Apple laptop in the last year or so. Only four to go...

Think Secret sux. It's become so unreliable as of late. Same with Apple Insider.
Huh? In what way? The only "mistakes" I've seen Think Secret make this year are jumping the gun a bit on the release date of 10.4.2 (though their reports were otherwise accurate) and predicting the iTMS Phone for June several moths back, which seems to have been unexpectedly held up.

Really, if Think Secret predicts hardware configurations, they're pretty much always right--they most recently called the PM, iMac, and eMac revisions dead-on. They certainly have a better track record than most rumor sites.

You guys need to stop bitching about iBook and PowerBook updates

Why? Because we aren't lackeys who get down on hands and knees worshiping everything Apple does or in this case doesn't do? Apple deserves to be kicked in the pants for where there mobile solutions are right now. I will sing prase to what Apple does right. I will bitch about what they do wrong.
