New form 13" widescreen ibook, one size only
New mini package with bluetooth keyboard/mouse and airport included

mini will also get a speed bump to 1.5, and 512mb standard

One size only? That would completely bum me out. If that happens, I'll be sticking with my 14" for quite a while.

He apparently missed the announcement. Psttt. There aren't going to be any G5 PowerBooks....pass it on.

so then enlighten us. where in the keynote does steve say that the PBs WONT get upgraded to a G5? apparently your confusing reality with whats in your head. steve basically pointed out that IBM hasnt offered them a solution and showed a big picture of a PB with a question mark with it. this, to me, means that apple cant wait for the slow pace of IBMs progress. it doesnt mean that G5s wont be in the PB as an absolute.

Why would anyone want a 1024x655 display over a 1024x768 display?

I understand the aesthetic argument for a wide screen, but like others on here have pointed out, if it's just a loss of pixels, it's a really bad idea.

IMO, that would be the worst thing ever. Make the current iBook *larger* and *reduce* the resolution.

I'm no expert on the LCD's, but I thought the 13" widescreens had much better resolution.

Ah crap I just purchased a mac mini today and get home and see this WHY ME WHY ME....... Should I take it back??????

Powerbooks are getting slammed thus far in this thread.

I just bought a new 1.5GHz 15" PB, and this thing kicks so much ass.

I bought a Rev A 12" PB a week before the move to Rev B and never regretted not waiting, because that laptop did exactly what I needed it to do for two years. Likewise, if Apple bumps the base model to 1.67GHz at the same price next week, I could care less. It doesn't lessen what my PB can do right now.

When the Rev B Intel books come around, I'll be upgrading. Until then, for my work presentations, photos, family vids, and more; this PB will serve me quite well; I have little doubt.

New models don't make old ones obsolete. I don't understand why such a simple truth is lost so easily.

It makes no sense is why people are saying it won't happen.

You've basically got one upgrade coming on the laptops before the move to Intel (conventional wisdom). You can totally redesign your system for the new G5's and then totally redesign it for the Intel's. Or you can do a speedbump (which they probably have all worked out and ready to put into production) and a total redesign for the Intel chips.

I'm sure the engineers are currently working on the Intel laptops as we speak. I'm sure they have all the parts they need and are working out all the kinks. I don't think they want to be currently messing with fitting a G5 in, and then rushing to do Intel chips.

I don't know much about laptops/ computers... but if the iBook was 13" would it's weight be roughly inbetween the weight of the 12" and the 14" models? Or would it lean toward the heavier side?

Oh and w/ some of the previous posts of possible specs; would any of those specs significantly alter the overall weight of the iBooks?

Wouldn't you think that they would make the 12" PowerBook a widescreen before they made the iBooks widescreen?

Just a thought.

Powerbook...

Hello all,

I just put in an order for a Powerbook 17" top of the range, etc etc etc. It is in limbo status at the moment, and I have the option to cancel it within the next few days. Im wondering if you guys believe the powerbooks will be getting a significant upgrade anytime soon.

I ask because Im not the iBook type, as I like the high end features of the PBook, but if something dramatic is coming out soon I'd rather hold off. Im not a big fan of the aging G4 chip, but I do realize the Powerbooks will not see a G5 for a number of reasons. Which leaves intel out there on the horizon somewhere. I had really put some strong consideration into the iMac G5, but would prefer a mobile system at the moment.

So, anything significant Powerbook wise before intel or do you think I should just go ahead with my purchase?

No reliable rumors so far, but it is very likely. I upgraded last week anyway, because the current models do what I need and want. If you're concerned abouyt getting burned, and don't need a new laptop now, you should wait.

Not necessarily... My 14" iBook has an optimal resolution of 1024x768, the same as the 12" iBook. This has long been a bitch of people about the 14". The screen has a bit of a "fuzzed" look compared to the 12" in its native resolution.

And I'm just guessitmating on the res on the 13.1" anyways.

you did this because of the intel announcement :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
talk about the sky is falling. if i needed a machine i would by a G5 in a heart beat. i'd even buy the current ibook. these are great machines and would last an easy five years. the ibook is for general computing anyway, so its not like i would need to wait for the best processor to hit the ibook line. in short, if someone needs a computer, buy buy buy. if you dont and are buying a new system not for necessity but for novelty, then i would wait.

still, good move since its what you want and you made a profit.

Well, I already had the my Mini, I have a bad habit of always wanting the latest greatest thing, and resale on eBay make it SOOOO enticing to upgrade. If the new Mac Mini is compelling enough, I'll probably upgrade to it. My nephew may even get my current Mac Mini as an early Christmas present.

Its a tough situation. Currently, I'm on an '01 Dull that can't do anything except for what youd absolutly need a computer for (ie: word processing, email, etc). The absolute NEED for a computer isnt there, but the desire for a modern computer that is portable is strong, and will develop into need shortly. Both the media drives on my Dull have crapped at this point, so the need is becoming apparent.

I did have the opportunity to demo a new G4 powerbook and it was rather nice. It did move a bit slower than i would have expected, but also surpassed my expectations in other areas. For example, it was able to play KOTOR with all features maxed without too much trouble...however I have heard there are issues later in the game. So then, it would seem it is adequate for what I need it for. Its a damn nice machine.

I realize updates to the PBook are inevitable within the next few months, but how significant they are is where Im stuck. For example, if the next revision was, lets say, a speed bump to 1.8 GHz or something like that, I wouldnt lose any sleep over it. But if it was a semi major revision, like dual core G4 or even :::gasp::: G5, Id crap myself.

My issue is the fact that the current book is super swell, but could be snappier. If a revision came with a sick new CPU or GPU, I wouldnt be pleased. Conversly, if there were only minor speed bumps until intel I wouldnt mind, cause I intend to ebay this thing at intel and pick myself up one of them.

Well the Powerbook will be hitting the average on August 2. I don't need to by my computer right now. I am waiting till early September to buy my PB. That gives Apple an additional 30 days to upgrade the Powerbook past the average. Even if they don't update, the current 12" is perfect for my needs.

the $699 mac mini better have a good processor... maybe dual tri-core g4's @ 1.7 ghz each.... or maybe I'll settle for a bigger hd and some more RAM... ;)

Yeah, but the PowerBooks still look better. ;). The WOW factor of a PowerBook has not been beaten by any manufacturer.

aussie_geek

I think it would be nice to build a place to put a block of ice on the bottom of the Powerbook. Geez!... this thing is hot 124 degrees!

Most here would say "it is the same good computer as when you bought it a few hours ago." That is true, however, it is also natural to want something that might be only days away.

Should you return it? That depends on how much you'd lose on restocking fees? If you paid with AMEX or certain other cards, they might even reimburse your restocking fees.

I have been reading these forums for several years now and I don't think anything can stop those "...... Next Tuesday" threads.
