finalcoolman,

I just realised you're the creator of this thread. How does it feel to have created such a monster?

With any luck though, it will be able to be put to rest in a couple of weeks.

Well for a brand new member, very good. In fact the reason I joined here was because of this whole iBook shenanigan. And I guess the thread title that never becomes outdated helps too :p

But ya, I just want to put this to rest. My G3 is about to die, and although my VAIO desktop is a beautiful setup (for a PC), the lack of mobility in order to accomplish anything useful is getting at me.

I'm exactly the same. I arrived with the mission of finding out about iBooks and I've now learned heaps and have also waited many months. Ah well, the journey is half the fun. Well, it's not but I'm trying to remain positive.

"However, sources close to Apple say it is only a matter of weeks before the company begins to introduce its summer hardware line, which is expected to include updates to at least one family of iPods."

This line in a recent AppleInsider article gives me hope for an iBook update by the end of June/start of July. Apart from the iPods, there is not much they can update apart from the iBooks, (and maybe the PowerMacs.)

I can't wait for iBook update!

Really hope the update could be just in a few days time, Friday?
i went to a local shop (Singapore) a few days ago, the sales lady there strongly recommended me not to make any purchase of iBook cos "people whom I know from Apple told met that the iBook product line is due to update, the new model could be out in anytime, latest in early July probably because Apple needs to give its Apple Centres (distributors) time to clear stock". Anyway, there is a current iBook promotion going on here for students and educators until 25 June to sale iBook at education price (no extra topping); almost all Mac shops are giving one type or another promotions like free ram or free voucher for all portables to redeem ANYTHING from its shop, incl. games!! Haha..

This is the info from the S.E. Asia.. let's all pray together!

:)

The resellers probably know just as much as we know on these forums, Apple wouldn't forewarn them on a future update. They are probably saying this as they have cleared most of their stock and don't want angry customers bringing iBooks back only a few weeks after purchasing, saying they feel cheated and wanting the update.

The customers also can't do anything about it. I don't think they have refund and return policy here in Singapore.

BTW, I was ALMOST one of those who bought my iBook during the sale. My credit card transaction amazingly was not honoured by the machine and I do not have enough balance to make the second purchase while I was at the sale. Now, I am very glad that I am following this thread!!! :) :) :)

Signs are good! Let's pray! I especially have to remember to mention Jobs to God if I ever happen to pray to hurry things up. I'm currently on librarys Internet machine because my P4 got severe hard-disk failure and has begun to overheat when running even the most basic applications...

my steph-father said that if my upcoming iBook has a decent unix underneath, iMac will be replacing our f*ckd up pentium. i'm glad he won't be disappointed. :D

Is anyone running tiger on a current ibook? How's it going?

I just bought an iBook yesterday, and put Tiger on it last night.

It runs REALLY smooth - even at 256mb of ram, its much more responsive than I thought it would be (as a computer, not with Tiger).

Tiger on an iBook is really nice.

The day that someone says
Oh My GOD! iBooks have been updated!
i bet several people will have heart attacks! go on, tell me, how many of you look at this thread at least once a day? i know i do!

im sorry if someone was skim reading! they must have had a short moment of happiness folowed by extream hatred for me!

Haha.. I was given a shock! (How if it was REAL?) Anyway, I do follow this thread closely... in fact, extremely close. It's already 2 am in Singapore and I am still waiting for people in the USA to load this thread with interesting rumours and personal opinions.

I think I shall go study my biology first, I'll be back later! Promise! (Macinsane!!!)

:D

I was all set to purchase a ibook from bestbuy here in canada. Anyway i went to go check it out and the sales person (ahem, not the most informed individual) explain that all the ibooks they had, only had panther on them, and in 2 weeks they will recieve their new shipment( that was two days ago). Don't know of it makes a differencem, but hey, might be worth something.

p.s. i posted this somewhere else, but never got a response. Does the Canadian apple store on-line offer refurbished computers like they do on the US one?...thanks.

Ibook stocks low?

I saw an apple rep in Manchester (england) today and he told me that it was unlikely that there would be an ibook update soon as 'they' had loads of stock.
I didn't really beleive him - maybe I didn't want to. Maybe he'd smelt my credit card that's been burning my pocket for nearly three months waiting for a new ibook!

So I did a bit of checking...

www.macwarehouse.co.uk seem to have taken a big shipment of ibooks this week.

But John Lewis are carrying very few (3 each model at last count)
- and have just discounted a model...

http://www.johnlewis.com/Shopping/P...T=Computers&PRT=Laptops&Type=SKU&Id=230206469

BTW. If you aren't claiming any educational discount and don't want any updgrades, john lewis do carry a 2 year guarantee as standard.

:)

The very least...

'so and so' update?

I think the VERY least they could do is increase the memory (it's dropped in price on the applestore in the last few weeks). Tiger really needs 256mb to run - and it's been a while since I used a mac that could only open one application (OS6 and before).

and of course the graphics card needs a bump - if only to show the ripple effect of widgets! Wouldn't you think even the base model of a product range would show off OSX's gimmicks?

Prediction.
- Slight increase in speed (don't want to upset the powerbook community any more... their g and 5 keys must be worn out by now!)
- 512mb of ram as standard
- better memory card

Of course we'd all like to see a tablet or a widescreen ibook - but I don't think any of that's going to happen now until the intel arrives.

What do apple do with all that spare stock if they bring out a new ibook?
Hand some of it out to students at a conference perhaps?

What price drop are you talking about?

Apple G4 iBook 1.2GHz Combo with 12 Inch Display
Reduced from £749 to £699
Free delivery and 2 year guarantee

OK it's the same price as APPLESTORE now, but you do get that extra year.

Well, i was thisclose to just breaking down and buying the 12" powerbook instead of waiting for the iBook update. i really thought i'd do it, and had my credit card out and everything. then PRIDE kicked in AGAIN. i gotta wait out this upgrade business. the only question is...what do we do with our time when it finally occurs? which threads will get obsessed about then? will we be like red sox fans after they won the world series, dazed with joy yet feeling the empty ache for a new curse? :p

what about a minor speed, hard drive, and ram increase now and by christmas once more, and centrino for ibooks and powerbooks by june of next year?

lightweight, fast, and very high battery times

if we are lucky, maybe we can get those centrino ibooks and powerbooks by january of 2006 for macworld sf...i would wait

what i am excited about is not the speed increase, because i don't think it will be that much, but by the fact that i know apple could make it run cool and get 7-8 hours on a single charge in sub-5 pound notebooks

the entry level ibook and powerbook could be 3.5 lbs and have 12" inch lcd screens and be perfect for students and business travelers...panasonic, fujitsu, and sony do it will intel processors so i know apple can

i think they can make a 4.9 lb powerbook with a 16" inch lcd but time will tell and i don't picture apple making something unglamorous like hp and dell who manage to have heavy weight centrino laptops with boring designs

I just hope when the update occurs I don't get cold feet and go "No, maybe a Powerbook. Okay, time to wait for a Powerbook update."

Think we will see mac mini updates on the 21st and iBook updates on the 28th.....Seems to make sense,

ShaDOW
