So I should bank on them announcing SOMETHING on June 6th? Mind you, here's my situation...Im jumping at a new iBook because of 1) my education discount and 2) the rebate for students, on TOP of the student discount. Otherwise, I wouldn't be upgrading. Apple says they HAVE to recieve the rebate and process it by the 24th, otherwise, that is invalid and void. My worry is that they announce newer iBooks, everyone rushes out to upgrade, my apple retail store doesnt stock them and then I have to order one, by which time My rebate form doesnt get sent out and I miss it entirely. Get my point? Trust me, coming from a 2002 iBook G3 700 to a brand spankin new 1.2 ghz G4 and Tiger will be a big enough jump for me. If I have to wait, it better be worth it.

Thats a tough call...whats the discount worth?

I expect a price drop and of course the current models will become discounted as well...

Does anyone think this might give any indication of future updates or are they talking only of supplying current iBooks? Would they supply schools with a model that's out of production by the time the programme starts?

http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2005/may/02cobb.html

(Sorry if this is a stupid question, I am not an expert on the update thing!)

Anyway, I'm in the waiting camp too, I actually wouldn't mind getting the current iBook 14" right now. I have an old secondhand PB G3 firewire whose sound board, battery and keyboard have been replaced already and whose screen has been slowly deteriorating, sometimes it flickers, the hinges are not even holding it upright properly anymore, and I'm using sellotape in one corner (!!) to keep it together, not to mention the clunky cd drive that is as slow as an old floppy disk, sooo, you can imagine for me upgrading to even the most modest current model would be a huge leap forward!

I'm going to take advantage of educational discounts, which I can do anytime even later this year; thing is, there is another promotion here, only until the end of May, to finance the purchase of an iBook at zero interests for 10 months. I'd like to take advantage of that too, so I don't really know if I should bother waiting for an update that may not come, or not soon enough, or be significant enough to justify missing the zero interests promotion...

I don't need any special video card features, I don't play games, I don't do heavy graphics, so, I guess the current iBook would be good enough. Someone mentioned video issues? As in, the display clarity, or performance, or both? Or something that would only be an issue for those who have higher requirements?

I am eye-balling the combo drive 12" ibook, the one that is slightly above the $999 at their site. Combo drive and Airport built in..I can get that one for $949, AND I take off the extra $100, so it's only $849 for an iBook that should cost $1100 or so.

And if they drop prices, I could always price adjust.

How long are you going to hang onto the iBook? If its more than a few years then the better graphics card will make a bit of a difference.

If its an immediate cash issue then I guess you can play it safe and buy now but quite a few people got burnt on the new iMac, apparently suprised that it appeared and how good - and cheaper - it was. My guess is that the new iBook will have a similiar reception by those who buy an iBook but really would have eben happy to wait and even pay more for the better specs...

ThinkSecret is the place to review and watch

ibook knock on effect

i am unsure which i will buy - ibook or powerbook.
unless the next update for the ibook is a significant one I will probably get a powerbook.

can anyone tell me if the powerbook prices will be affected by an ibook upgrade - will they drop and/or will the ibook's increase?

Apple ain't increasing iBook prices. Powerbook prices might fall, but eh... I'd put the chances at 20%. Of course, in almost every PB update, the prices of one of the models drops. But there isn't much room on the 17 or super-15. However, if Apple doesn't get double-layer Superdrives in the Powerbooks and goes with a ****** G4 update, I wouldn't be all that surprised if Apple drops the super-12 and super-15 and makes superdrives standard features.

Keep in mind that if Apple does another cruddy G4 update, the chips are going to run at 1.67 and 1.833, which, percentage-wise is an even smaller margin than between 1.5 and 1.67. This would be especially true if Apple, as they are prone to do - considering their penchant for minimalism - lists a 1.833 as 1.8.

Would enough people want to upgrade to 1.8 from 1.67? Especially if both have superdrives? Eh... you'd have to have dual layer on the super-15. However, those in the know will realize that the 1.8 is really 1.833 so who knows.

On the other hand, if Apple upgrades to the newer 200 bus G4, you might actually see a drop (!) in speeds such that the models are 1.6 and 1.8 even. This chip would be a better chip, no doubt, but lots of people will complain given the strange step back from 1.67 to 1.6. Knowing Apple, if they are going to switch G4's, they are doing everything they can to get the speeds at 1.8 and 2.0. And that would be a pretty tight upgrade, as far as I'm concerned.

I think iBook and Powerbook prices will both drop. The iBook is struggling to compete with the cut-price peecee laptops and, if they're going to drop the price of the iBook, then they're likely to also drop the price of the Powerbook so that the cheaper iBooks don't affect the sales of Powerbooks.

My question is:

Why have we not even heard a peep yet? WWDC is only a little over 3 weeks away, and no word yet? I swear I remember hearing rumors of new iBooks weeks before the 600/700 G3's came out. I don't know...an update is needed, but Why NO news?

I'm thinking about updating my ancient clamshell and i enjoyed this thread - so thanks contributors. I'm going to wait now.

I posted this on another forum somewhere, but here goes again...
i predict they're gonna get a form makeover based on ipod mini styles to target market for the 'halo effect'.

because apple sues anyone who spreads rumours about their latest secrets!

macrumours got into trouble, now their only news articles are obvious ones that anyone could tell you.

ok, i just went to apple.com and read all about their open GL, core image/video, and core audio. I also wacthed the quicktime video with the 'dashboard ripple effect'...while all this stuff seems cool and slightly impressive... i dont NEED any of it. bluetooth? wont use it. more ram? i can buy it. faster cpu? don't care much about that either.

i think i'll buy in a week or so, so that IF they announce new books, i can price adjust

ibook firmware updates perhaps? making the 9200 "ripple effect" compatible? i mean if it can be done in world book encyclopedia, can't it be done in the os level?

You might not need it now, but if you are going to keep your iBook longer than two years, I'd wait. Core Image will become more and more prevalent in the future and will do a lot more than simply ripple your screen. For the longevity of a computer, A 64 MB GPU is a necessity.

That hasn't stopped ThinkSecret and AppleInsider from calling a lot of the recent updates to PowerMacs, iMacs and eMacs. ThinkSecret's shown zero fear in reporting rumors...don't know why they'd suddenly stop, shaking in their boots, sitting on an iBook rumor.

That doesn't make any sense.

I think Apple is being unpredictable, and that in this case, the buyers guide is not the be-all, end-all when it comes to telling the future of the iBook line. The PBs are standing in front of an iBook update...and until the PBs become hot for an update...I wouldn't be holding my breath for an iBook update.

Just my humble opinion.

WWDC - they need to update PowerBooks as well or someone can get a 14" iBook cheaper than a 12" powerbook and get the same features - and an iBook wont have a 1.5 G4 any time soon...

When did MacRumors get in trouble. I was unaware this site was ever attacked by Apple legal.

And there is my dilemma. I can't just sit around and wait for Apple to announce something. I mean, if they don't announce it at WWDC, what if it isn't until fall? That would suck to wait so long! I NEED a laptop to do school stuff from. I'd feel foolish waiting for so long, you know?

Current iBooks are an excellent value. Don't feel foolish about buying now, if you need one.

I wonder how credible these rumours are?

PowerBook G5
The new PowerBooks are to be shown at Jobs keynote on 6th June at WWDC. Currently at Dual Core 867MHz G5, they are expected to be released at 1GHz, 1.2GHz and 1.5GHz Dual Core G5. They currently are 1.7" thick with a large G5 type grill on the bottom to increase airflow into the unit. There is a secondary shield inside, to prevent particles from entering the inside system board. The new PowerBooks will only be released in 15" and 17" sizes. The 12" PowerBook will be replaced by a souped up iBook.

Update: Due to engineering problems within Apple, they will now not be showcasing the PowerBooks. Currently, the "Hardware Engineering" team has only managed a 867MHz Dual Core G5, which is slower than the current top of the line 1.64GHz G4. Also the battery life is roughly only at 1hr 45 minutes. Next dates now, point to MacWorld 2006.

iBook G4
Expected to include a return to colors, the new iBooks are set to be the funnest and fasted yet. Soon to be available in 12", 14" and a new widescreen 15" display. The iBooks will take the specs of the late PowerBook G4 line, and include 1.5 and 1.64GHz G4 processors. They (may) be unvieled at WWDC, but more likely at the Paris Expo, in time to ship for the back-to-school term. The new cases haven't been 100% chosen upon yet, as Apple is devoting 99% of their time to the new PowerBooks. They may be released as a translucent case, with white accents. Bluetooth 2.0 and Airport Extreme will feature in all iBooks.

Special Edition Laptops
Apple may release "All Black" versions of the new iBook and PowerBook line. They will be bundled with the U2 iPod and a new "Tiger" protective sleeve.

iTunes 5
To be released soon with the new iPods, iTunes 5 represents a major stepping stone for Apple. Featuring a new Music Store which will support new international stores and a new "Maintenance Agreement". Pay $2.99 (to-be determined) a month, and if you accidently delete a song you purchased from iTunes, you can re-download it. The delay in iTunes 4.8/5 is due to both the iPhone being late, and also a few problems with record companies in the new international stores.

Mac OS 10.6
Where'd the 10.5 go you say? Well Apple is skipping it out to make this look like a bigger update, when really, it isn't. Set to include the leftovers of Tiger that were never completed on time, the current list of new features include...

* A clone of Windows "Active Desktop".
* A new dock.
* "Dock Switch" - Ability to load multiple docks.

10.6 will be called "Mac OS Lion", because it is the last of the 10.x releases, and a Lion is the top cat. The first developer builds are currently estimated to arrive shortly before next years WWDC, with the GM in 2007 ready for an April 29th release again. Let's hope they don't force another $129.99 out of us...

Mac OS 11
Set to be the "real" next-generation OS from Apple. It will include several 3D features. Work on Mac OS 10.6 and Mac OS 11 are being done at the same time. Very little work has been done on this. At the moment, a few coded features include...

* 3D finder windows - They "flip" when you navigate.
* A 3D dock.
* G5-only support - All product lines (should) will be updated by then.

iWork '06
Apple is busy porting over old AppleWorks modules and improving them. Currently iDraw, iChart and iWord are being developed. A database module is currently last on Apple's list. iWork '06 will not be a free upgrade for iWork '05 users.

The forgotten iPod
Folks wishing on update iPod shuffles will be sad to hear that the Shuffle is known inside Apple as "the forgotten iPod". No one really cares about it, it was just a device to attract buyers to the Music Store and the Mac. But the other iPods, well that's a different story...

5th Generation iPods
Apple is phasing all Mono screened iPods for a complete Color lineup. Featuring a brand new interface deeply inspired from Mac OS's Aqua. Expected in 40GB+ capacity only. Your little iPod will now be able have...

* A dock - featuring access to various "apps"

The iPod photo is being phased out for something a little "bigger"...

Apple "iPal"
Following on the "huge" success of the iPod photo, Apple is taking it to the next level. The iPod will only play music, so here comes the iPal. To be released in 3 specifications...

* No camera (built-in card reader) - for use in camera-forbidden workplaces.
* 0.6MP camera.
* 1.2MP camera.

Using the same new interface as the iPod 5th Generation, but with an extra app in it's dock, iPhoto. iPhoto Mobile will let users navigate through the photos and view them, or take new ones. No editing features. Apple is working on making a "lite" OS X that will instantly load from the Flash RAM, but currently they're having problems. It will be available in silver.

Motorola "iPhone"
With the release of iTunes 4.8/5, along with the new features listed further up the page a few extra ones specifically for the Motorola "iPhone" will be added. One of the features, is the "Address Book Contact Sync". The code is currently embedded in iSync 2 in Tiger, but not usable. "ApplePhoneconduit.syndevice" is the name of the file, go look if you want. The delay in iTunes 4.8/5 is due to both the iPhone being late, and also a few problems with record companies in the new international stores.

Update Peripherals
Updated "Wireless Keyboards" and "Wireless Mouse", no not a 2-buttoned one! They just feature better battery support, which plague the current ones. Your meant to turn off your keyboard and mouse when you go away! To help the lazy people (myself included) Apple are adding a better AutoSleep that actually works. So you don't have to worry about new batterys every few days. The iSight 2, which will be released at WWDC (and given to all Keynote viewers) feature an upgraded camera designed to give you faster frame rates and support for Tigers h.264 codec. Also you can use it with QuickTime Streaming Server.

No, they certainly dont seem to be credible.

Like thats a very thick powerbook!

I'd be really happy, for the 12inch, to get a bump to 1.33, 512ram, 64vram and 60gig HD plus a small price cut.

That would be a decent upgrade...and then I'd buy one.

If they upgraded to 512 standard (soldered onto the main board?) then I'd spend my money on a 512 stick to bump it to 1 gig.

Nevertheless, it was good while it lasted... a good dose of suspended disbelief and for a few moments I was transported into the future, experiencing first hand what apple will bring us... the come down is terrible, rumor-crack that's what macshrine.com's tag line should be. ;)
