WWDC or bust!

I agree. Whatever the powerbook offerings at WWDC, that's what I will be getting. Waiting till Paris is out of the question, since I will be needing a Powerbook for college, and the expo is even later than it usually is.

well no sign of new ibooks this tuesday does everyone think that its either WWDC or we will haev to wait until the paris expo in sep. cannt imagine having to wait that long

Using inference clues and the almighty buyer's guide ;) we assume all things point to WWDC. I would expect rumors to fly about in the next 15 days if they will come out. If not, we'd have ALOT of people including myself who will be very angry for waiting so long. Stay tuned.

true that i hope they don't @#$@ up!!! If so i will have to get Powerbook..

I just love this thread's title. Every Tuesday it's wrong but hopefully it will soon be correct!

I would be amazed if the update doesn't happen during the WWDC. But that's mainly because I want that to be true!

Personally, I think that Apple will soon want to inject the novelty factor back into the iBook, and I don't really think that WWDC is an appropriate forum to do that.

My prediction is that we will have to wait until MacWorld Paris, at which time we should see a new form factor, with a handful of improvements to the specs such as a CPU speedbump, 512Mb of RAM, and an improved GPU.

Considering how long the existing model has been on the market, Apple would be pushing their luck a bit by dragging this out until September, but a price drop in the meantime should buy them some time.

When the rumours were around about new iMacs and eMacs, a couple of the reports said that iBook updates were thought to be very soon, (in early may.) This obviously hasn't happened but why would they suddenly be shunted back to september? I think we will see them on the week of WWDC, if not sooner.

This is probably colored by wishful thinking, but isn't Paris too late for the education market? If apple wants to sell to college students, it had better announce new ibooks before Sept. 20-24. I would think that they'd be extra eager to get them out at the beginning of Summer, particularly in light of last year's imac fiasco (none available to buy all summer). I have to think we'll get the updates in June.

I expect a iBook update to come at WWDC. After seeing what Apple did with the iMac, I am very hopeful. The PowerBooks will still have a few things to differenciate them from the iBooks: widescreen, FW800, PC card slots, ect. As long as PowerBooks have widescreen, there is going to be a difference between them. I expect 64mb VRAM, Bluetooth, scrolling touch pad, bigger hard drive, more RAM. Sure it puts it right into PowerBook range, but I don't think Apple has a problem with that. Look at what they did to the iMac.

Except for the 12" PowerBook (which I bought last week). NOT widescreen, NO FireWire 800, NO PC Card slot... And GeForce FX 5200 Go/64MB... Can't wait to see the 12" iBook. :(

I agree. I'm going to uni in september and am waiting to buy my iBook until it is next updated. Although I have been converted enought to wait for the update, many wouldn't be and will see other PC laptops getting better and better as the iBook stands still.

[...]every spec on the PB is higher than the iBook. Plus there are the extras like the ones already mentioned (widescreen, PC card, FW800), the Sudden Motion Sensor, backlit keyboards, scrolling trackpads and dual monitor support without hacks, extra software, etc. Plus I prefer the metal to the plastic, in terms of look and feel :)

No backlit keyboard on the 12" PowerBook either...

I'm a bit dissapointed because all the features that people keep pointing as being "PowerBook only" aren't even in the 12" PowerBook. This means the 12" PowerBook is more like an iBook, features-wise.

The thing is, I wanted a small laptop but SuperDrive isn't offered on the 12" iBook. I'm happy with the 12" PowerBook, but I'm wondering if I should've bought a 12" iBook anyway, considering most of the "PowerBook" features (backlit keyboard, FireWire 800, widescreen display, built-in S-Video out, PC card slot) are NOT included in the 12" PowerBook.

Granted, I do have a faster CPU, better GPU, twice as much VRAM, faster HD (5400RPM), dual screen support, scrollpad, audio-in and built-in BT, but I'm missing on all the other "PowerBook" features and that's what's bugging me. Of course, given its size, I guess there's some stuff that just couldn't be crammed in there, and I understand.

I'll simply hope the next 12" iBook rev. doesn't put it too close to the 12" PowerBook if only to keep the best resale value of the PowerBook for as long as possible.

All in all, I'm quite happy with my purchase. I just didn't realize there was so many PowerBook features missing in the 12" model.

Well, I just sold my iBook on eBay for $541. This money goes towards a new iBook, woo! WWDC is exactly 21 days away. 3 weeks exactly. Let's hope something comes of it!

I'm interested to see what happens with the ibooks, but I still doubt I would go for anything less than a PB even if it was close. Just that extra something.

No matter what happens, the current machines will still be just as good as they are now and aren't going to break the minute new ones are out. Be thankful it's not wintel, that's all I can say.

I'm getting a PB right after WWDC, updates or not.

Has anyone considered the good possibility of iBook updates at D: All Things Digital?

That’s an interesting possibility however since its not an all Apple even like WWDC I do not think they would make a major announcement like new ibooks at that particular time.

Maybe Apple is stuck in the iBook Tuesday Paradox.

That is, Steve says "hey, I want to release new iBooks in 2005 on such a Tuesday that no one will *ever* be able to guess which one it will be." Somebody else then chimes in and says "OK sounds good, but it can't be on the last Tuesday of the year, because if it's a week before the last Tuesday and we still haven't released new iBooks, everyone will know which Tuesday they will be released on." A third person stands up and says "Since it can't be the last Tuesday of the year, it can't be the second to last Tuesday either, since everyone knows it can't be the last Tuesday and so if it's the week before the second to last Tuesday and we still haven't released new iBooks, everyone will know which Tuesday they will be released on."...This continued for several hours before Steve, not wanting to just announce the release date way ahead of time, decides that it's not worth releasing new iBooks at all this year since it's impossible for him to surprise everyone.
