I really dont think that they are switching to the year-round format, I have seen this in other countries, but never in America.
Myabe there are a few schools around the nation doing this, but I doubt it will spread very fsat or very far......

Year round schools are usually for elementary ~ high school... universities still have long summer breaks..

Everything I have posted earlier about year-round schools is true. Just because it is not happening in your community does not mean that is is not happening. Most school districts in the states I mentioned have already switched or are switching to year-round format.

As I've posted elsewhere, I finally cracked, got a Powerbook and it arrived yesterday! Hurray! But I just got a message from a friend who's planning on making the switch to Apple with a laptop. I'll find out tomorrow if it's a Powerbook or iBook he wants. And if it's the latter, I don't know if I have the heart to tell him about updates. Why cause someone so much pain?! :D

True, but why let someone buy almost a year old hardware brand new?

Tell him that the PowerBook/iBook are going to be MOST LIKELY updated BY the MacExpo Paris.

The iBook is overdue, the PowerBook is reaching the end of a cycle, so updates are COMING for BOTH portables.

And that's the tricky thing. I hope when he comes round tomororw he'll see my Powerbook and decide to go with that. Because, and I'm not just saying this because I just got one, but an update with the Powerbook isn't going to be too dramatic. Not until the Macintels anyway. Whereas an iBook has the potential to be pretty impressive. I guess I'll find out tomorrow.....

Hey, let us know what he decides

*loves that more people are coming into the Mac community!*

Well, the past several product introductions Jobs has made, he ends the introduction with, "Oh yeah, and it's available immediately." I think that is how he wants it from now on. When he introduces a product at a keynote, he wants it available immediately for customers. So when he introduces it, then people can go out and immediately buy it.

The thing is, Apple chooses when the promo expires. Why not make it expire a few days earlier. I mean, these promos are to get rid of old inventory, not sell the brand new updated stuff.

I don't know if all the old promos had this wording, but the last two have said you must "take possession" by xx/xx/xxxx. As a business move, I think they would make the rebate expire just before the convention if it was going to be available. I don't know.

It would be very nice though if we could grab a brand new updated iBook a few days before the promo expires. Hell, maybe they'll update the iPod mini then too.

I see where you're coming from, but I must say that you've been posting in this thread a bit more than twice a day lately. And I am definitely not jealous. Where did you get that from?? But let's not let this get out of hand. I have come to talk about iBooks and that's what I intend to do!! :)
Correct, my explanation earlier was merely an example to explain you guys' accusations, and based on just two post counts per thread would be over forty in a couple hours for me. I post many more in many other threads. There are others who post far more than that. You all made post count the issue, I was merely giving a simple explanation.

Also, I have only talked about what others have brought up in the thread. I did not initiate any of the topics that took the thread off-topic, yet I did and will continue to respond to such comments in others' posts. I came here initially to find out about and talk about iBooks. You all started the accusations and attacks against me. For what reason, I do not know.

I apologize, are you referring to a specific promo expiration or promos in general?

You are right about promos for getting rid of older stuff, that is why they are trying to get rid of iPod minis right now. Yet that is still a good deal, heck, an iPod mini for free is a good deal, if one doesn't already have an iPod.

One can always sell the iPod mini and apply the money towards RAM or a second battery for an iBook.

Like you, I tend to think there will be no updates during this current promotion. I think they base the time of the promotion on two things:
1) to help move older inventory out, and
2) to expire before the new, updated products are released.

Apple has no reason to promo a newly introduced product. That is a promo in itself.

Yes, that is correct. I specifically referred to grade schools, so as there would be no confusion.

I think it looks like we wont be seeing the new iBook until august 30th at MacExpo Paris......

ShadOW :(
Isn't the MacExpo from 20th to 24th september?

Although it is hugely annoying, so long as they are shipping immediately after the update I will be OK. Just imagine if we have all waited for months for an update, it comes out and then we have to wait another month to get it.

One "promo" I have not seen mentioned in this thread (at least for a few weeks) is the Amazon rebates. The 12" ibook goes for $999 and has a $100 mail in rebate, and the 12" PB goes for $1499 with a $150 rebate. Not too shabby if you are not a student. Sales tax is also a consideration. I may pull the trigger on an ibook today; I'm tired of waiting.

Holy crap did anyone else notice? What happened to the 49 pages we had? Now we have what, 46, 47 pages? And we have much less posts too! OH I SEE! The mods cut out all of the fighting posts and - WOW - they banned sacear!!

And rightly so.

So... how many people who were part of this thread back in the beginning are still waiting? How many have cracked and bought either and iBook or Powerbook? And how many have given up and gone non-Mac?

Well, I've been following this thread since the beginning, but I didn't post in it until I believe page 12  . Although it's been really hard, I am still waiting and will continue to do so until we see an update. Hopefully that will be soon though.

still waiting....

But went to Best Buy yesterday to look at some PC laptops.

I really want an iBook so I will wait a little longer but as I'm moving soon, I am running out of time!

So all is pointing to no update until the Paris Expo. But that is mid-September, right? As far as I know, at least here in Florida, school starts late August/early Sept. And the iBooks are geared towards students. So the average person who is looking for a new computer will probably have bought theirs by the time Paris rolls around.

And that makes no sense.

I've been following the thread since day one too, although this is my first post in it. I have been ready to buy an iBook since then, but am now wavering and may use the money towards a new TV instead now

I've been here since the beginning, (about page 3 i think,) and haven't cracked yet. I'll be getting the 12" with a larger HD, BT (both of these will hopefully be included in the upgrade) and then will buy a 1GB stick of RAM from Crucial.

Ive been in the market for a new 'Book even before this thread began. There was a second or so during that time where i briefly considered a windows book, but prompty scolded myself. What I was really hoping for was an iBook with a substantial screen and better hardware. Oh well...

I have recently gotten wind of an excellent deal through my school on a fully loaded 17 powerbook. Apparently it was ordered for a staff member, they powered it on once and decided they didnt want it, and gave it back to the microcomputer order center. They saw I had a 17 on order and offered me this one for $2000. Not bad for a $4500 computer!

That being said, I would still be let down if a decent update came to the line at Paris. It goes against all my beliefs and buyer's savvy to pick up aging hardware. As I said, however, this is a truly excellent deal that I cant let fall through the cracks.

Yep... I've been looking at getting an iBook since early 2004.
I waited for the rev. in May 2004, but before it came, I found a great deal on a flat panel iMac. :D
When the rev. in October came (the current one) I thought to myself: "I'll be smart and wait for the rev. next May."
The "rev. next May" still hasn't come, and here I am.

Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia are still 9 month systems with long summer break.

The more I think about it, the more I realize that we will not be seeing an update until the Paris Expo. Only makes sense, why have an IBook + Ipod Mini promotion if there is the intention of an update half-way through. Promotions are used to clear stock, nothing more. I doubt they'd want to give away new products at a discount.

Bah, just to be safe I will wait until this coming Tuesday; but on the very same day I need to make a decision: Get an upgraded Ibook or go with a less expensive more value for the money PC Laptop. :/

I don't really see any reason that minor bump to the ibook line would come at an expo. Hardware releases at expos are generally major revisions (i.e. new form factors, new architecture, etc.). If the next ibook/powerbook revision is going to be a minor thing like the last few have been, it could be any time, and will probably be done with little fanfare.

If they are making a point of updating at Paris, I would expect something major like the first generation of intel processors.

iBook aint really that expensive when hardware is compared to PC-laptops, folks. Most of the low budget pc's come with shared video memory, and those which are equipped with proper vram cost more than 1100 euros. Plus they miss iLife & OSX..
