if i were you all, just get the powerbooks. a couple hundred more, but these computers are nicer, better keyboards, sexier, modern.
I'm about to get an iBook. What's the difference between the iBook and PowerBook keyboards?

(I notice the Technical Specifications for the iBook lists "77 (U.S.) or 78 (ISO) keys, including 12 function keys, 4 arrow keys", while the PowerBook lists "78 (U.S.) or 79 (ISO) keys". What's the missing key?)

There is a lot of speculation today that the Powerbook could go to a G5 with this processor story from Japan. If the PB does go to G5, would this create enough room between the ibook and the powerbook so that the Ibooks could be updated as well? Forgive me, but I am nearly illiterate when it comes to computers

ixnay on the owerbookpay gee-ivefay
MacRumors will never hear the end of *that*, but I think we all know *it* will never happen...
(You have just made reference to the most talked about Mac rumor of the past few *years*. Please don't ever mention *it* again  )

The PowerBooks have an F12 key and an Eject Key, while the iBook have one key that doubles as an F12 key and an Eject Key.

Yep, the extra dedicated eject key. However, I understand that the keyboards on the Powerbooks are much better than the iBook, according to others on this and other Mac forums. I'd go to an Apple store and see for myself.

If you plan to depend on wireless connectivity extensively (Airport/Bluetooth), you may want to stick with the iBook. iBook also has better battery life. Like someone else said somewhere else, the iBook's 90% the computer for 50% the price. I try to keep that in mind as I try to wait for the iBook update and not set my sights on a PB 12 incher.

at the current posting frequency in this thread i bet on at least 2000 postings..

This thread looks like it has Rachel Hunter legs that just won't quit. If 5,000 postings is still open in the guessing pool, I'm good for ten bucks on it. :)

I just noticed that the very lowest end iBook (the one with only the CD drive; no ComboDrive) is no longer being offered at the online Apple store. Has anyone else noticed this? You can still find it if you try to order online using an educational discount, but without the discount, there are now only 3 versions of the iBook for sale.

I have never seen the CD only version only on the site. I have always just seen the same 3 (12" Combo, 14" Combo, 14" SD).

This is a worst case scenario, but if the new iBooks waited until the Paris keynote, (which is on 20th Sept according to the website,) when would they be available and start shipping.
Between immediately and three weeks, depending on initial demand.

Will the buyer's guide policy change once all Apple Notebooks have been on "Don't buy - updates soon" for half a year or so? Perhaps it should be simply changed to "Don't buy."?
I don't pay any attention to that Buyer's Guide. It is unreliable at this point.

I'll bet you anything you want that the PB never sees a G5. The only way the PB will see a G5 is if Apple decides to not go Intel afterall.

I just checked at bestbuy and they haven't unloaded any of the shipments yet. However, they are selling the 12'' model open box for 60 bucks off.... 60 bucks, who cares about 60 bucks when you're about to drop over a grand....jeez, who knows whose greasy little paws got all over it. bad deal. so no update today, i'm just moving to the pb, if you're spending the cash, you may as well really spend it.

The PowerBook will not go to a G5 CPU. Apple will not spend the R&D money to create two new form factors in less than two years. Do you know how expensive those PowerBooks would be?

The new PowerPC 970MP chips will probably only get into the Xserve, the Power Mac, and maybe the iMac.

The PowerBook G4 will hopefully see another speed bump or two, yet the next new PowerBook form factor will be for the Intel CPU.

Was the "media event" just a rumor of was it confirmed? If so when/was it?

I'm guessing 1500 posts untill a new iBook...
It was never a confirmed event, just an report that a French newspaper received an email from Apple. Kind of shady from the start.

Definitely not immediately. I'm pretty certain it would be just after the Student Union expires, which makes it about a week after.

I think it has only ever been offered at the education sites.

True. The buyer's guide is based on historical information and, because development of the G4 is running out of steam and the Intel switch is on the way, I don't think that historical information is as relevant as it used to be with respect to the portables.

Anyone know why Apple Care is more for the Powerbook than the Ibook? Also, is it necessary to purchase Apple Care at the time I purchase my notebook, or is it possible to buy it later?

PowerBooks (15" and 17") have backlit keyboards.

The missing key must be the "Power" key. ;)
Or the key to life, iLife. :p

Hmm, seems the PowerBook keyboard is larger than the iBook keyboard also. :p ;)

Seriously, on the iBook F12 and eject share the same keycap, on the PowerBook F12 and eject are two separate keys. :)

Japenese sites are reporting on the "Power Everywhere Forum 2005" conference which takes place today in Japan. IBM's presentation provides official details on the PowerPC 970MP processor which has been long rumored. The specs appear to include (presentation slide):

970MP
Dual core
1.4-2.5GHz
Each core has 1MB L2 cache
One core can be swiched off for low power mode

Also low power 970FX processors were described:

1.2GHz at 13W
1.4GHz at 13W
1.6GHz at 16W
Hellooo there! Dual-core, low-power processors?! Could this mean...?

No, I'm all too optimistic. :(

This is fairly self-explanatory. The PowerBook is a more expensive machine, with more expensive parts (display), that costs more to repair or replace.

It is not necessary to purchase AppleCare at the time of purchase of the computer or iPod. AppleCare may be purchased anytime within the first year (365 days) after purchase.

HTH.
The 12" iBook and 12" PowerBook have the exact same screen.

Press Release

Wasn't there suppose to be some big press release today? Did I miss something? What was all the hoobla about?

We should start a game where everyone guesses how many posts will be in this thread at the time the ibook actually gets updated. We have had about 200 posts in the last 2 days, so it could go as high as 2000, 3000, maybe even 5000. What does everyone think it will get to? My guess is on 2,354.
