    Hi-

Just opened up my new BTO iMac and have discovered this iMac does NOT like playing certain games. Lego Star Wars (Force Awakens) set at 5120 res and also Battlefront Pacific-both purchased from App Store-make the computer shut down or, worse-make a LOUD popping sound from the back of the machine tonight. It sounded like a circuit breaker popping and the computer rebooted itself.

Can anyone help me? I DO have AppleCare+

Try download cinebench and run some test. It could be a problem of the game only.
Is 16gb all from apple or did you add 8gb yourself?

The 16GB was factory installed. Steam works fine w/TF2 & Portal 2...which is why the behavior w/LSWFA is so weird.

The pop could easily be the speakers popping as the system crashes. You sure it wasn’t that?

No, it was a loud metal pop from the back of the iMac. The system is in for repair at Apple & they are replacing the motherboard. The iMac crashed right in front of the Genius. It sucks that a brand-new system needs a motherboard replacement but hey I have AppleCare+ and if the problem continues it'll be fully documented.

That does suck. Any reason you didn’t just order a new one and send this back for a full refund?

Yes I purchased it in a tax-free state with my flight benefits and don't want to have to fly back there to bring another one back. If it has problems after this repair I'll explore my options.

Well its official-Apple said they can't repair it and are getting me another BTO identical to what I originally ordered. The loud POP I heard definitely meant something was wrong with it after all. They don't have an estimate on the date the new one will be available as it IS a BTO and another one has to be built and shipped to me.

My friend who was an Apple Store Genius told me this is why he never recommends BTO systems-but the off the shelf systems all have the Fusion drive which I refused to purchase. SSD all the way and I will say w/SSD the system was SO fast. Just hope the new one comes quick and works right.
