I don't want them to do a retina screen unless they are willing to put a pair of GPUs in SLI/Crossfire with a decent amount of Video Ram (say 2GB on the 21.5 and 4gb on the 27") to drive that many pixels.
Agreed. People are complaining about heat problems with the current model, and apparently Apple is hell bent on making it thinner (even more heat problems). It's simply not realistic to expect that they'd put in a 4K display with another 5 million pixels on top of the current 3.7 million.

"The iMac could potentially see up to 32 GB of RAM, although that assumes the machine will continue to offer four slots as on the current models. Considering rumors of a thinner profile, this may or may not be the case."

Apple's recent emphasis on thinner profiles taking priority over function (see the new iPod touch, etc). This could very well be what happens on the new iMacs and this would be an almost unnecessary trade-off in a non-mobile desktop.

I really hope Apple doesn't trade "case for space"

Given that Ivy Bridge only has 6 months left before Haswell is released, its small wonder Apple can "afford" not to raise prices. They are making a killing now selling outdated Sandy Bridge parts and last years GPUs and they will still be making a killing next week.

Haswell is a terrible name. When I read it I think has-been which may be completely a projection but people who are adamant Intel is on the wane may call it that too. Pricks.

After Haswell there should be Roswell. What geek would not want a CPU that has Roswell in it, if only in name? Alright, the ones with the tinfoil hats may have their doubts but for everyone else it would be very cool.

I'd settle for HD4000 integrated graphics.

You shouldn't ^^.

IF you run a couple of light games on it you see it's barely able to support them, if you want a machine that will keep offering an acceptable amount of performance for the next 3 years (no talking about games but all software and future OS) discreet graphics is the way to go still.

After Haswell we'll see but for the moment HD 4000 isn't enough.

Hopefully by Summer 2013

Hopefully by Summer 2013 which is when I plan to make my purchase they will come with next generation Haswell microarchitecture. That should add a significant boost to performance. I understand DD4 memory should be out by then. I expect updated GPUs too, then I again, I don't need overkill. But, if I can get the best bang for my buck, no problem. I plan on keeping this computer for the next 10 years. My 9 year old Dell Dimension 8300 died in June, so this iMac will be its successor.

If you're bitching about how these need retina displays or you wont buy it, you seriously need more things to invest your money in.

Its just a codename, you won't see that name anywhere in the final marketing product. It will likely be called 4th generation Core processors from Intel.

i thing the problem that I have with Apple in general is that I have the feeling that I will spend 2.000 and 1 one year after the definitive version will come, and then I will regret.

Then after the year, you realize that it did not happen, but you know that some day it will! and then you know that day is even closer, since you already waited 1 year.

So, now I cannot wait more, and I will buy either an iMac or MacPro. But I have the feeling that a big iMac release will be then in 2013, with the retina. All of us knows that will come, the question is when.

What a mess.

You mean throw another 16gb in ? (2x8gb sticks) , it already takes up to 4 4gb sticks for a max of 16gb,

Incorrect. The mid-2011 takes up to four 8GB sticks, for a max of 32GB. The limitation is dictated by the chipset used, nothing else -- it supports 32GB, and I can confirm it by having 32GB* in my mid-2011.

* I do database development, and tend to spin up VMs that require a huge memory footprint for testing.

No retina display, no sell. It's 2012, Apple, not the 1980's.

...

Kidding, I just wrote that to see what it feels like to be one of those entitlement douches.

Out of curiosity how does it make someone "an entitlement douche" if they're holding out of buying a product until it has a certain feature they want?

The nice thing about Thunderbolt is that you can opt for the low-end, integrated graphics and just add an external high-end video adapter whenever you decide you need it.

I think I read that somewhere...

ooo, tasty. Now to decide if I should get the new Mac Mini for my tv purposes or try to get an older version at a discount.

How does retaining current pricing necessarily preclude the addition of Retina displays? It's typically Apple's practice to keep prices constant while adding new features to new model revisions.

Prapare for ExternalDVDgate!

Because setting an external DVD drive most people never need on the foot-stand or to the side, or putting it in a drawer when not in use, is the end of the world, even if the new iMacs are enough better value to more than pay for the now-optional DVD hardware.

When you look at the iPad/iPhone yes. But the sizes of the display aren't the same between iPhone, iPads etc and iMac, Macbook.... Look at the rMBP, nice price increase ;)

This all sounds good news. Hopefully we'll also see a more realistic set of pricing on the bigger storage options - in particular, an option for a smaller SSD with a hard drive (128 GB is overkill for the OS and major apps if you have a drive for storage anyway...)

I love how all of these "reports" are conflicting and we actually know NOTHING about what's coming in a mere 5 days... I can't wait to place my order next week... new design or not, I need a new machine and will buy SOMETHING next week, whether it's the new model or last year's model with a price drop (finally)

Yeah.... Me thinks I too will be buying whatever comes up next week... Its a little hard to let go the fact that I would be buying old hardware... but an iMac nevertheless:D

Please, 4K resolution display for the new iMac :)

Why? Whats the point?

Seriously other than 'it looks cool' there's very little in the way of real-world use for "Retina" (aka resolution doubling) on desktop PC's.

It creates a bigger demand on the GPU, makes 'non-retina' graphics look pixelated (and that includes 99% of website images), etc.

Whilst it would be 'nice' its by far the most unneeded item on a desktop computer.

I thought rMBP was cheaper than some of the cMPB configurations.
