De ja vous?

Hello,
Been chatting in the chatroom today and as a first timer I have to say it was pretty cool to exchange views on the new imac. Most people take comments like this as a crititism, it's not.

Looking at it it kind of reminds me of the mac se.

I knocked ths up quickly, does anyone agree?

Clarify question on iMac G5

HEY ALL. I JUST SWITCHED AND TODAY BOUGHT A 20" iMAC G5. 3-4 WEEKS SHIPPING  BUT AS A STUDENT, I WANTED TO CLARIFY SOMETHING ABOUT THE SOFTWARE. DO ALL MACS COME INSTALLED WITH WORD PROCESSING AND ALL THAT GOOD STUFF? I SAW AN OPTION FOR AN OSX STUDENT EDITION, BUT I DIDN'T HAVE THE MOOLAH. CAN I STILL DO THAT ESSENTIAL STUDENT STUFF RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX?

thanks

meh, not bad

Not terribly exciting but pretty good. The bottom looks funny, a little wide. I still say the Imac g4 is the best thing they've done, design wise. I would've been fine with them modifying their previous design. I'd be suprised if this sold better than the predecessor, although I'm sure it will sell well intially....it just doesn't have the "wow" factor, IMHO. Having said that I was sort of ambivalent about the new displays, and then I saw them in person and loved them. Hopefully the same thing will happen with the imac, but right now I'm not terribly excited.

Where there/are there going to be any other announcements at the expo....new software or something?

I like this design. It is the smallest all-in-one desktop since the Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh eight years ago.

There is one thing; a pair of PC users were monitoring #applerumors yesterday and are under the firm belief that all Mac users hate this machine, and have used their observations to flame Apple at another message board. Once again, Windows junkies' desperation wind up with distrust and dishonor abound.

Honestly, it still looks good to me...

I'm probably in the vast minority here, but I didn't like the look of the G4 iMac. Not that it wasn't very functional, and very cute, but the rounded design didn't do it for me.

The G5 looks spectacular to me. It's got almost 0 footprint! Who cares what it looks like, as long as it runs my programs? Well, that would probably be most other people. As far as functionality goes, it's a winner. Everything is right there in front of you, and it's portable.

I bought a DP2.0 for the very reasons that I like upgradability and higher performance -- but I'm really just a regular consumer. I've been running an iBook 500 (256MB RAM, OSX.3) for the last four years, and it's still chugging along. It chokes up a bit here and there, and I'm not playing any Halo on it, but it still does 90% of everything I want to do with a computer. If I got even the lowest end iMac G5, I'd be blown out of my socks. It'll run videos, edit photos, play music, and let me balance my checkbook. The average consumer user won't do much else with their computer anyways.

Apple's designed a machine that will serve most users quite nicely. For users like me who need (or just want) some more muscle, the PowerMacs aren't that much more expensive.

Included software:
Life (includes iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD and GarageBand), AppleWorks, Quicken 2004 for Mac, World Book 2004 Edition, Nanosaur 2, Marble Blast Gold, Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Test Drive and Apple Hardware Test
AppleWorks will do the essential stuff, but I'd buy Office or see if one of the freeware suites will work better for you.

Salvaging Body Parts

Well, anybody ever find those black marketeers that can sell of a kidney, maybe my left testicle. I need to update my iMac now, and save for the 60gig iPod sure to come soon.

Nice ports :D
So I'm guessing this will keep most of your external devices on the right side of the desk, or behind the LCD?

One thing I noticed. If you go to the Online Apple Store you have the option to upgrade your keyboard and mouse to a wireless set that come with the bluetooth adapter for $99. My question is are you now able to setup a bluetooth mouse and keyboard when wanting to reinstall your software, how does the computer know that they are there. Don't you have to run a setup and link them to the computer???

That would be a great BTO option!

In some ways it reminds me of the auto companies. They offer limited options till the consumers speak loud and clear. Sort of the new the 92-x offering a sunroof, while the Imprenza wagon doesn't.

Sorry if someone has posted this yet though but...

Wheres the Power Button?
It's nuclear. Truly break-through pricing!

Actually, it's on the back, below all the ports.

Edit: I think it's actually under the plug. Not sure.

How apple managed the price cut?

It sure is cr#p.

The only things less than 18 months old in this machine are the G5 and the RAM speed. The rest of it is not available for sale anymore.

It seems apple waits for the left-overs from the chinese PC factory fire sales and builds computers with what they find!!

Sure those who worship this once cutting edge computer company who now uses parts the 3rd world no longer have use for......can NEVER take an objective view at the real deal.

Welcome to the Mac and congratulations. I see that you are excited! :)

If you need to use Word/Excel, etc. I would look at the discount you may be able to get at your school. Sometimes this is pretty good. If not, the student edition from apple is your best bet.

If you don't need word, the iMac comes with TextEdit and Appleworks, both which can read, write and save basic MS word documents.

Enjoy.

Oh, and I am also surprised and impressed that Apple managed to somehow engineer a G5 into such a confined space. Perhaps the G5 PowerBooks aren’t as far off as I have predicted. Nah, I won’t back down – I stand by my claim of no G5 PowerBooks until MWSF ’05, with shipping dates a few months afterwards… (especially just for you, Squire...) :p ;)

Hmmmm. As I recall you said I will not have a PB G5 before June 05 in my hands. We will see if Apple can beat that. :D

Sunflower Lives!

The swing-arm iMac is not dead. Here's a VESA swing-arm pic from the Apple store's accessories page:

The arm's non-Apple, just an example of what can be done (looks like one that clamps to the back edge of a table). The VESA adapter is $29 ($26 edu), same price as for the Cinema displays. (But it's a different part--available for order in October).

I can't wait to see what people do--swinging out sideways from a wall, suspended from the ceiling, or with a detachable VESA mount that has brackets waiting in multiple rooms.

So... where's a good place to browse VESA hardware? :)

Like the design, not sure wether or not it beats the old one but anyways it says on the website that its going to be able to play " World of Warcraft and Doom III" just fine.
But im not sure, the graphics card is not THAT good...
One thing it helps to understand is that people tend to vastly overestimate the amount of GPU they will need for games or otherwise. It's based mostly on a continuing "mine's bigger" contest rather than reality.

Two small questions....

Personally I like the design really very much and it fits well to my needs, but two things are not yet clear to me:

1. Noise levels. It seems to be a quit design, but has anybody actually heard one of these in Paris and reported on the noise levels? Quiteness is really important to me.

2. Responsetime of the display. Is this the new 16 ms or the old 25 ms, anybody know? I can live hapilly with the FX 5200, but 25 ms would be a big disappointment. I could not read it on the apple site, which worries me a bit.

Thanks for any help on these questions. :)

Thanks for the pic! See, I'm liking it more already! Now how about a front shot? :)

Excellent price point, congrats Apple. Very tempting.

Anyone any idea on : what the quality of the speakers will be like? I know its difficult to tell on a machine no one has seen or used but do'ya reckon they will be like the speakers on the G3 imac? Or have a bit more power like emac?

Also - OK we take the back off to fit RAM but on my first glance at the pics peeps have posted I couldn't see the RAM anywhere. Maybe I am not looking hard enough, but its gonna be easy to fit, yeah?

Overall preliminary rating: one fine piece of machine. Can't wait to try it

2005 upgrade is the one I'll get

The next iteration should have Tiger, a decent graphics card and 2GHz. I think I can hold out with my G3 iMac till then.

See picture here. The RAM's on the lower right, next to the G5.

superdrive speed

so, I haven't seen any specs yet that state if the superdrive is 4x or 8x....anyone spot anything?
