"Flower Key" forever!!! :D:D:D:D

FLOWER KEY? Ummm, ok ....

I still call it an "Apple" Key ... and probably always will. I catch myself explaining to PC users in the office how do do something with "Apple+(insert key here)" or worse yet, "Open-Apple + ???" and am greeted with quizzical looks ...

Stoopid "Command Key" :p

A "controlled leak" to gauge public reaction to a potential major redesign?

That's what focus groups and NDA's are for. If apple listened to the people that read these forums they'd release mid-towers, osx to run on regular pcs, and a G5 powerbook next Tuesday.

Ooooh, boy!
I made some laudable efforts trying to refrain from posting...
I'm still vexed as to why am I doing it. It may be because I am currently studying ID so you may consider me a passional 'lad'...
In regard to recent opinions posted here that were meant only to shout out faintly deliberated verdicts regarding ergonomy, esthetics and the like I only have to say one thing: "think!"...

My personal reflections on the apple keyboard are rich in both pros and cons. On the pros side:

*this new 'anatomy' will allow for a much easier cleaning process... I hate how fast my keyboard gets all smudgy with filth...
*visual clutter is something I have a spite for... The current keys are a 'tad' too tall for my taste, and the gaps between the columns of keys are becoming annoying too..
*the newly shaped keys will (hopefully) tune down the sound of some "not so apt keystrokers" like myself... Typing on the current apple keyboard at 3am in the morning is a sure bet on nightmares.
*finally they thought about newcomers and actually wrote "option" on that 'alt' key instead of that bewildering detour sign... and on the same note I couldn't help not to notice how pretty the arrow keys have gotten. *Delete and Delete(backwards) make more sense now.
*about the choice of color and materials: since when did 'bronze' aluminum and white rubber have become a 'pariah' combination? I actually love anything that resembles copper and unless you are a 4 year old pokemon freak keys should be either white or black or grey and that's that.
*if (and I hope so) it should be smaller in length compared to this one, that would mean more ergonomy in terms of desk space... And on top of that, hopefully it would get to be a lot lighter than the current one, sparing me of sore shoulders on my long train journeys (I sure hope they consider taking 1kg or 2 off the current imac model)
...
About the cons:

*I admit... those function keys seem pretty hard to press instinctively...
*the way in which they repositioned the eject and volume buttons in something to laugh at to say the least... they were perfect the way they were before...

That's about it... I should also add that if you want an ultra-ergonomical keyboard then probably the apple keyboard won't cut it for you... So, just like you buy a higher resolution mouse with a million functions on it, you should probably consider putting out some cash for a keyboard *especially* designed to aid your acheing hands during afterhours on ichat or YM and so on. People who are looking for some media oriented keyboard should probably look somewhere else... This keyboard is designed to satisfy great masses of simple home users... And to do that it takes, well, a great deal of simplicity...

Moshi Keyboard from Aevoe

I'm beginning to think this might be a photoshop job of this keyboard. I saw it today at Microcenter and thought it was the iMac Keyboard shown at the top of this thread.

Here's the link to their site:

I don't know, I smell a fake. I don't like how the keys are smaller in comparison to the standard keyboards now utilized. Plus, something tells me there is less of a tactile feel with this new keyboard, and while I like my Mac Book, I like my Mac Pro's keyboard for the ability to hear and feel what I'm typing.

Geez, this thread grew several pages while I was reading it.:p

I'll just say I think it looks fugly. Not to say that I won't buy it, but I just don't like it....especially the removal of the Apple from the Command key. 'Apple' is much more simple and easy to identify. 'Command' sounds like some obscure reference to some PC keyboard. Plus, it is in the same place as a Windows key is, so newbies don't get as confused as when they see 'Command'.

I'll buy it just for the sake of buying it.....but I want that aluminum bottom painted white. Or black.

It's not command, it's not apple, it's "flower"!

Another Moshi view

The keylayout is identical to the one being touted as the iMac Keyboard with the "possible" photoshopped function keys. The lack of an :apple: key on the keyboard is a bit suspicious to me but not outside the realm of possibilities that Apple would remove it. I think it's just a hold over from the Apple ][ days more than anything else and removing it from the keyboard would certainly make it more "acceptable" to switchers I guess.

Where is all this "flower key" stuff coming from???

I've never seen a flower that looks ANYTHING like that command-key doodle.

It looks more like a square with 4 party balloons tied to the corners.

(Edit: Or maybe a turtle with it's head retracted. You could call it a "turtle key" and be just as likely for people to know which one you mean.)

I've always called it the flower key. Maybe because the computer I was raised on was an original Macintosh 128k.

Well, looks like the photos on Flickr got taken down.

I wonder how "flexy" it would be. Low profile/laptop keyboards always have too much bend when they arent supported in a laptop.

The term "Command" was never used until the PowerPC days, and it was used by the new-comers who didn't know or understand the power of the "Open-Apple" Key.

I realize that you are exaggerating but, in case it's not clear to someone, it has been called the command key since the early days of the mac. Here's a usenet post from 1986 to back that up. (PowerPC macs weren't manufactured until 1994.)

Some newbies did call it the apple key, but the only people who called it open apple were those who had previously used the Apple ][ series of computers (and those infected by Apple ][ people--lots of that happened in the U.S. public schools).

btw, I think people should be able to call it whatever they want to. I often call it the quincunx key (and have since at least 1993 because I think it's my fault it got included in this slightly-amusing post).

I had a Franklin clone of the Apple ][ back in the 80s, and have been an Apple fanatic ever since. You're the first person I've ever encountered to call it "flower." Normal people call it either "Apple" or "Command."

No Apple on the Command Key?

Does anyone else think it odd that there is no Apple symbol :apple: on the command key? Makes me wonder if this might not be a 3rd party keyboard.

It's amazing how the cable looks exactly like the USB iPod cable, down to the clip-on plug cap. By which I mean I doubt that it's real.

Why would glass match that? It seems like it would already match the entire mac line (except the black macbook) very well. It's a white and aluminum keyboard. All apple's machines are white and aluminum. What am I missing here??

Yes, apple's machines are white and aluminum, but not both colors/materials on the same machine... Can you imagine the Mac Book Pro or Mac Pro with a big hunk of white plastic on it?

And glass, yeah I misspoke, I meant clear plastic, like on the existing keyboard. (White + clear plastic.)
