I'm just waiting for them to add some ridiculously good graphics card. I am gonna be so pissed if they do.

I'm here again to give you some more facts.

Penryn processors using the 266 MHz multiplier
1066 MHz Front Side Bus
DDR2-667, DDR2-800, DDR3-800 and DDR3-1066 SO-DIMM RAM support
DisplayPort
GMA X4500/HD

All true, but I was speaking specifically as it applies to the iMac. :)

The iMac is not going to use the GMAX4500 since it has a dedicated ATI GPU. And DDR3 memory is unlikely because of the cost and performance. And DisplayPort is also unlikely since the ACDs do not support it so Apple would stick with mini-DVI.

I will spot you the 1066MHz FSB, however. :D

i still don't fully understand why apple can't use Wolfdale desktop processors instead of the mobile Penryn processors... anyone have any real conclusions other than it apparently being too hot?

One more question.

If apple uses the mobile processor in the iMac, how much faster is the identical desk to processor. IE 2.4 MHZ Mobile verses a 2.4 Desk top Processor?

Thanks

i bet if this comes true that there wont be anymore imac updates untill august 15th , why august15th ? because its the imacs 10 year anniversary, or birthday as i like to call it.

I work for a retailer that sells Apple. We never know when or the details of why, but 5 years later you start to get the swing of Apple's logic (product cycles). We had our current ALU 20"s cut a while back, now the 24"s as well. I literally sold the last of our ALU 20s last night as it seems Apple's plan is to freshen most of their line with Penryn. We have zero 20's and two 24's left.

There's no doubt the refresh is upon us. My question is: in looking back across all iMac upgrades (the complete iMac history) from the most minimal to complete overhauls... will this small jump to Penryn + HDD increase officialy be the most insignificant upgrade ever? To my knowledge it is. Seems its more of a benefit for the Apple/Intel relationship than the buyer.

Thoughts? Thank you ahead

No. We have had minor speed bumps/capacity upgrades in the past. At least this one adds new tech to the CPU.

Interesting thoughts, KGB. It would seem that it will be a minor bump, unless they add blu ray, which seems a tad early. Maybe they have a surprise or two in store??? (not holding breath)

I mostly agree, but I don't wouldn't call Apple's simplified product line pointless. On some level, it is quite smart to offer a simple product line, but I believe Apple takes it way too far. There's room in their lineup for one at least more Mac - the midrange tower.

Let's look at this from the perspective of a savvy potential PC->Mac switcher. Your choices for a desktop Mac include:

1. Mac Mini.
2. iMac.
3. Mac Pro.

Keeping our potential switcher in mind...

1. Essentially a headless laptop. Weak, out of date, and surprisingly expensive. Made for people whose needs don't exceed email and web surfing or maybe a cheap file server. Not going to appeal to the more savvy PC users.

2. An all-in-one. Our savvy switchers very well might have a nice LCD which they want to bring to their Mac, so this won't do. Also, it lacks a video input, so you won't be connecting your PC, PS3, or 360 to it.

3. Mac Pro - not overpriced considering what you get, but it's very expensive and more powerful than what most people would ever need.

Assuming you have your own monitor or don't otherwise want an all-in-one, where does that leave you? There's a $1500 price difference between the most expensive Mini and the least expensive Pro - and that difference reflects a ridiculously large gap in performance.

I think Apple should condense the Mini into one SKU and drop the 4-core Mac Pro, leaving ample room for a 4-core minitower at maybe $1800. They still get a simple product line and lots of PC and Mac users get a hell of a usable machine. I quite like the iMac, but one-size does not fit all.

BTW, I'm an Apple user since the Apple IIe and I have a budget for a new Mac, but Apple doesn't leave me with much choice - I don't want to buy a Mac Pro because it's more money/power than I want, I don't want an anemic Mini, and I can't use my consoles with an iMac. So it's not just switchers whom Apple is leaving in the cold with their sparse product line. Why can't they at least put an HDCP-capable DVI and/or HDMI input on the iMac?
this is EXACTLY the posiiton I'm in at the moment. To the point of thinking about getting the iMAC and if it doesn't work out, just giving it to the wife / kids. As a person wanting to switch from PC to Apple, I'd never even considered the Mini. But then I thought what will I do with my current display if I get an iMac? Anway, I guess all will be revealed soon enough or June.

Yep I totally agree with you on this one.. I'm coming from the PC market but I don't think of my self as a Mac switcher. In fact if it wasn't for the fact I need a Apple to work with one specific program there is no way in hell I'd even think of buying one.

Why is that? Quite simply the low end machines mini and iMac are for the most part useless to me. The high end machines are expensive as hell and are still somewhat useless to me compared to a PC.

I'm going with a iMac not really by choice but because it's the least expensive option I have with Apple (the mini just wont do). the Mac Pro would be nice for what I want to do, bu I'm not paying $3k for a machine that is no where close to what I could build in relation to a PC. Much less I use my computer for work but I'm also a gamer, so I always built a high end PC that I can both work and have fun with.

I hate the idea of buying a all in one unit that I can't replace parts on if something goes bad, but I've decided I will sell it soon as the warranty is up and replace it.

In all honestly the only market I can see Apple doing well in, is the "trendy" market, none of their machines are even comparable to what you could buy on the PC side for the same money other than maybe the laptops. The "only" thing Apple has going for them is they aren't using windows and their OS is the only other viable solution for the average user who doesn't want to use windows.

If they sold a nice 4 core tower in the $1700 to $2k range it would go a long way towards bridging the gap. I think Apple is just shooting for the "trendy" market hence the reason you always see Apple's in movies and so on. So in short I don't think they aren't after power users, gamers or even PC savey users. Just users who think it's cool to own a Apple or think the iMac is "cute".

On the professional side.. I just can't see any corporations buying overpriced hardware when they can get so much more bang for the buck out of a PC. I don't even think the majority of design/3D/graphics work is done on Apples anymore.

next Tuesday is the anniversary of the FIRST iMac EVER!!! It's OBVIOUS that an update will be introduced!!! :D

Cool, i'm using one right now after my eMac decided to leave me.

What's left to say here, i'm awaiting an iMac, too. I really don't care about the monitor or Blu-Ray, but some more graphic and proz' power should be in .. otherwise i'll have to switch to the dark side.

No 30-day price guarantee,

While there's not a 30-day price guarantee, there is a 14-day price guarantee. Same link as noted earlier by mhnajjar.:D

I'm heading off to the local Apple Store today - tax-free holiday in Tennessee. We're gonna check out the 20" and are hoping there are updates next week. We'll just keep it boxed and wait for the 14 days. So if not this Tuesday, then maybe the next Tuesday. :)

i still believe it's going to be quite a major and unexpected upgrade.. it's in less than 100 hours, let's see!!!

What kind of major upgrade are you expecting? Quad-Core is not ready yet. And if there is a case redesign, they will debut it at an Apple Event, like always.

All signs point to a mediocre, but welcome update. The only way something great will happen is if Apple was able to persuade Intel to let them have Montevina early.

I'm just not sure what a tower brings to "switchers", honestly.

When it comes to switching, I expect you're either going to first "experiment" or you're going to "commit" from the start.

If you want to "experiment", the Mac Mini is a great choice because it allows you to leverage your existing keyboard, mouse and monitor all for the cost of a KVM. If Apple was really serious about getting folks to "experiment", they could knock $100-150 off the price.

And if you are going to "commit" (as I did), then the iMac (my current choice) or the Mac Pro (my next) are your options. You can keep your keyboard and mouse if you want, and even your monitor if you want to go dual-display. It has more power and more storage and is enough to do most tasks - even more "pro" ones like photo and video editing (though not with the power of the Pro).

The main thing I see from folks who want the "mini tower" is they want the 8800GT card, but they want to save $500 vs. a 4-core Mac Pro. If the iMac had the 8800GT - or the 4-core Mac Pro was $1800 instead of $2300 - I expect many, if not most, of them would be satisfied with it as an option.

I know this has been mentioned previously in the thread BUT...
Why would apple wait till a month before the Montevina launch to update the imacs???
Either apple has special privileges with the new platform (like the MBA) or they're being right B*STARDS
I'd like to think they had special privileges but my suspicion is that montevina would come in august (as usual) UNLESS there's a BIG update planned for august
thoughts?

I can't see a case redesign... The new one only launched about 8 months ago! Case modification maybe - thinner; mag attachment for remote. I can't even see a matt screen option

Unfortunately the EyeTV doesn't support 1080p and that's half the reason I want a 24" monitor - to play my console games in full HD. Apple's way-out-of-date ACDs not only lack the second input, but also lack HDCP support.

It's like SJ hates gamers - the Mac is a lousy gaming platform and he'll do nothing to accommodate those who wish to supplement their Mac experience with a gaming console.

it is too bad that Elgato doesn't YET support component inputs... i actually wrote them recently inquiring just that... none of their devices support component, but it could happen on their end before it's supported on the mac natively... it's only a special chipset for Elgato devices afterall... and i'd be all over that if it's released.

i'm not sure if steve jobs hates gamers... he use to work for Atari pre apple, and actually helped create "Break Out"... i agree that Apple's welcoming game development for the mac (circa WWDC '07) is a little late, but to be fair, i'm happy i have an iPod instead of an updated Apple Pippin... besides, the Wii would have crushed it hard like it has all the other consoles :p

i still believe it's going to be quite a major and unexpected upgrade.. it's in less than 100 hours, let's see!!!

i COMPLETELY agree... Penryn+Santa Rosa does not scream 10th Anniversary iMac. although the iMac was only announced in May of '98 and later shipped in August of '98, it would be seriously douchey of Apple to do a boring speed bump now, only to do a major upgrade in 3 months...

i'm expecting AT LEAST desktop Wolfdale processors, or an exclusive early use of Penryn+Montivina... or maybe a 30" model... but just SOMETHING other than speed bump and bigger HDD, which would be a total yawn...

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet but I have insider info that's going to blow you guys away. I can't openly say it so I'll leave you with this... C****s! I'm 90% sure I'm right on this!
