My take:

New iMac specs - great

New iMac design - I don't like it

If glossy screen is the only option, it's not for me.

Numbers - finally

Core 2 Mac mini - finally

Fantastic!

Beautiful! Can't wait to try out the new Bluetooth keyboard, too. Although I could never quite get used to the keyboard on the MacBook. Too used to the PowerBook/MacBook Pro keyboard. Guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks after all. . . Ah well, I can probably adapt!

Don't forget about Leopard...

You've got to imagine the new iMac running Leopard, with that green-leaf-and-dew background and the transclucent top bar and dock (the transclucent bar with the 'classic' blue background looks crap imho). Then you will be able to see why the black and aluminium work so well wiith the green and how it will all make a lovely thing of loveliness to behold.

However, I still think the white iMacs looked better.

And the eMacs look the best.

If it's any consolation, I think the new iMac's kinda fugly, too. Anodized aluminum makes me think of cookware, not computers. This looks more like some blinged-out toaster oven from Oster than a cutting edge consumer PC.

The glossy screen and the graphics card both suck, and I'm surprised they're still shipping with only a gig of RAM. I'm worried about heat issues with that horrid Radeon chipset, not to mention the faster processor. I want a quiet machine, not a noisemaker.

I far prefer the look of the old model. In fact, I'm considering trying to pick one up cheap. Maybe the new iMac looks better in person . . .

I would have to agree with you - I think that the old model was a more beautiful and distinctive design. Something about this just doesn't look like an Apple (I can't quite put my finger on it, but something about the design seems a little off - perhaps it's the glossy black on brushed aluminum?) and the black border / glossy screen doesn't seem like something that Apple would do.

In any case, not a bad design, but - in my humble opinion - a step down from the last design, which aged surprisingly well.

I think that I too will now be looking for a 24" white iMac on the cheap... but with the new keyboard, which is hands-down beautiful.

i want that new keyboard!! i really like the macbook style keyboard, but am in no rush to buy a macbook when i have my mbp.

its just so pricey at 50 for the wired version!!!

ahh what to do..

*lol at the whole argument in the first few pages.. i kinda figured that there would be a wireless replacement as well, which would be the compact version, not to mention there were to different shapes of keyboards shown on screen...*

You can get the keyboard for $30 and the mouse for $20 (both wireless) when ordering with the new system - but they're ridiculously increased shipping times.

Question is to get the keyboard/mouse seperately to have the computer ship faster, or to wait and save the $110...

Anyone know if they'll be carrying the 2.8 Ghz model in store or is it BTO only?

My father is getting one and we plan on taking a road trip to visit my cousin and the Christiana mall in DE on Saturday.

The memory upgrade prices are comical. Add $850 for 4GB.

Or ... you could pay $232 to OWC and unscrew one screw yourself. Tough call.

The mouse is still white. . .?

So. . .the mouse has not been updated to match the aluminum finish of the computer and the keyboard? Don't like this. . .

That keyboard, whilst OKish for laptops, sucks for desktop.

Personally, I can't stand the MacBook keyboard, and that new iMac keyboard, obviously takes after the MacBook.

Whats with the giant spacing between each key anyway?

I love the design, but I will hate it if they get shticky like the mb

Whats with the giant spacing between each key anyway?
It's a standard size keyboard. The spacing between each key landing is the same as on any other keyboard. These new keyboards just eliminate the beveled edges of each key. The "space" on the keyboard is an illusion.
I was also looking at the smaller chin and noticed that if you take the black bezel into account as part of the chin then it really may not be significantly smaller than the old chin.
That's part of the function of the black bezel. Obviously, they wanted a smaller chin, but getting rid of it entirely is both undesirable and not possible. The black bezel gives the appearance of a smaller space by breaking it up. It also hides the camera lens and provides a clear break at the end of the display area (same reason movie theater screens have black borders).

I would appreciate any advice on my upcoming decision to buy the new imac from all the Mac gurus out there.

I am trying to decide between the low end and middle 20" imac?

I will be getting it upgraded with the 500 GB hard drive and have the education discount. The price is $1,283 for the low end and $1,489 for the middle 20".

Is the $206 difference worth getting a 2.4 GHz processor (versus 2 GHz) and the Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256 (versus Radeon HD 2400 XT with 128MB memory)?

Of course money is an important consideration, but also is value and longevity.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, and nearly all DX9-class GPUs, given appropriate driver support are fully OpenGL 2.0 compliant. At the present time, there's no benefit from a DX10-class, unified shader GPU in an OS which doesn't support DX10 other than performance benefits a new generation of GPU may have over the previous one. Sadly, the 2400XT is not faster than the X1600...

I agree dude. What a load of crap the new iMac is. Flashy processor with a graphics card that can't even run year old games properly. Very disappointing. I'm going to go and buy a PC!

Yeah, seriously. That's very un-Steve. I can handle the chin, but the
5 o'clock shadow is killliiing me.

Yes, the more I look at that black border, the more I am mystified by what looks like such a bad design decision. Hopefully it will look better in person. :(

I'm sorry -- It looks like a Samsung LCD TV.

This is too bad. Gone with the old iMac is the last bastion of *truly* minimalist, discreet, understated design (=elegance). There is a hint of kitchiness in the new design, and unfortunately also in Leopard (e.g. reflective dock, transparent menu bar). I'm getting worried.

I actually like the black border and think it will come in handy when watching movies.
