Maybe I liked the old iMac too much - so clean and white, almost other-worldly and like nothing anyone else was doing. The back of this new model looks like a Dell display (great displays but it's not a compliment on the appearance) and the front - sans logo - looks something like Sony might come up with in copying the old iMac. My love of the old design conflicts with a good Apple goal in these - to use less plastic, which I am glad they've done. It seems to be getting a very good reaction in the forum though, so it looks like I'd be in the minority of an Apple focus group.

I wonder if apple still sells the yesterday's version of iMac. I would buy it. New video really sucks. All the reviews and tests show how bad it is. Why Apple used it? I think it is politics and we, the consumers, suffer.

Chin + That keyboard + A black border.

Not to my taste unfortunately.

Aluminum is a big improvement though.

I simply love the new design. When I first saw the new iMac on Engadget's live coverage, I wasn't quite sure if I liked the black back and the glass screen. After seeing some close-ups, I really like the design. I can't wait to have it on my desk. :)

I can't believe the 24" iMac, after nearly a year, decided to downgrade from a 7600GT to a HD2600 Pro. Words can't describe how sad I am...how on earth can I rationalize paying for that?? How on earth did Apple rationalize paying for that?? Did Apple make some sort of "Well no one else is going to buy your cards, so you're going to give them to us for free" deal with ATI? What about the heat issues?

Oh my science, this is confusing.

I seriously hate that black border around the screen, and the black on the back, seriously, is the golden age of apple design over so soon?

I like my white imac better. A lot of gushing over this not so great design.

I thought it would be silver in the back too, with the "imac" or apple logo, that would have looked MUCH nicer.

Ideally, the imac would look like the back of your ipod/iphone with silver and the reflective silver apple. Now THAT would be worth gushing over, this new imac has nothing over other manufacturers designs now where it used to stand head and shoulders above it.

^^ Totally agree. I think I'll be saving the money from the 2.8GHz C2E and go with the 2.4GHz, pay $100 to crucial to go to 2GB ram, and buy my PS3. I'll be console gaming here for a while. (My norm, but I was still hoping to do some on my Mac). Argh.

Looks pretty nice (especially the keyboard), but then... why did they have to put that black border? It just doesn't seem to jive from a design point of view...

Anyone else feel the same way?

Unfortunately, I was really ready to jump on this thing but (once again) I'm incredibly disappointed in Apple's choice of video cards. To pick one of the absolute worst cards available right now... *sigh*. I thought Apple was finally showing some foresight with the relatively good card in the Macbook Pro.

And yes, I know it's a "consumer" machine. But to not even have the OPTION to upgrade the card on the $2499 model (which has some tremendously beefy hardware besides) is ludicrous. "Consumers" play games. "Consumers" do a lot of stuff with graphics. Why put a $90 card in a $2500 machine?

As it stands, I will probably buy one -- but not for myself, my mom. She needs a spare machine and the $1200 model is enticing (and an excellent bang for the buck).

But for goodness sake's, Apple. You've captured the youth demographic with the iPod. People like my brother heading to college need new machines. Why do you need to give them an excuse not to consider your Macs? "Dude, it doesn't play games well? Forget it." Really quite a shame -- awesome hardware otherwise.

Unless someone can justify the price for the upped CPU to me.

Anyone have any idea how the 2.4 C2E compares to the X7900 (2.8 C2E)?

any other store sightings? Mine still isn't answering the phone and I'm not driving 40 minutes to be disappointed.

You know, Apple is probably just holding back on supplying better cards JUST to provide it for their next update. That way, it makes the update look better to those waiting, while also getting the sales with the low-end cards for those wanting the new iMac at its release. Maybe in January updated cards will be out. That way, there also won't be a ~335 day wait for an update, too.

Only you are going to be able to do that, if you are going to be doing alot of processing for hours daily, then maybe it will be worth it. The prices to performance won't be there otherwise.

I actually like the re-design. I think it gives a sleek sophistication to the iMac line. The gpu may not be super-duper-top-o-the-line-plays-wow-at-4000fps BUT it is decent for most people and easily runs most tasks. Macs are not gaming rigs, keep that in mind. iMacs are designed for people who want simplicity, elegance and design in one package, and I believe this new design embodies that. While the keyboard change is something to get used to, I think using a similar keyboard to the macbook for wireless is mostly a cost-saving move, simplify and reduce cost overhead to reduce price points for consumers. Apple could make a super gaming rig prosumer mini tower that would make you get off just by reading the specs but, do you really want to pay what they would want for it?
Stop whining about how it didn't live up to your wet-dreams and just look at the positives, at least they didn't revert to a radeon 9600 or keep the gma950:D
And glossy isn't really all that bad, if the display is like that on the 17 mbp, then there is nothing to worry about it'll be gorgeous.
Will I change my mind on the mbp 17" hd I'm getting? no, but that doesn't mean I won't revisit the imac later in January to contemplate a desktop...

Notes from imac_24_mid2007.pdf:

Replacing the glass front is tricky:
as these are needed:
Suction cups, Pkg. of 2 1.
Sticky silicon roller (6-inch) to clean the glass panel 2.
Sticky sheet pads to clean the silicon roller 3.
Polishing cloths, clean, anti-static, optical grade micro fiber “terry” style cloth4.
Gloves, lint-free, anti-static, Pkg. of 2 5.
Microfoam bag to store the glass panel, Pkg. of 56.
ESD bags, 24x20, Pkg. of 5, to store the LCD panel. 7. Note: To prevent the buildup of static charges which may attract dust particles to the surface of the display, store the LCD panel in an anti-static bag whenever it has been removed from the system.
iKlear Apple Polish or Brillianize anti-static spray cleaning solution. A list of where iKlear/8. Brillianize can be obtained is listed in the Glass Panel chapter of the service manuals.

There's a new "audio board" added.
No more special access card needed for both.

I like the fact that Apple kept the iMac's "chin"... it gets to keep its personality. And I guess the black border can grow on you after awhile. Two distinct new keyboards are awesome! I just wish 2GB RAM is standard for the premium 24" model.

Tell me about it. I'm so bummed about this. I was thinking of picking up another 24" this spring and giving my wife this 24"...but I have to reconsider now if the video card in the NEWER 24" is going to be lesser than the one I bought this past January. I don't get it. Not even an option.

So if I want a Mac now that plays games on a decent level (even if I have to bootcamp into XP), I'll have to spend WAY too much to get 24" monitor with a Mac Pro?

I'm just stunned. Guess I'll save my money now until the next iMac update.

I haven't decided whether to spring for the 24" with the 2.4, or the 24" with the 2.8 C2E. For $100 I can upgrade to 2GB ram through Crucial, so I need to decide whether $400 is worth a HDD upgrade and slightly faster processor. Anyone with advice? Is the speed difference that noticeable?

Yah, Apple store still down so I can't price extras. 250GB is not enough HD, so I need a HD upgrade of anything I buy. Curious what 2GB cards will be... Will have to stroll by the Cambridge store after work. At least pick up iwork, since that doesn't come with a new mac. Try and buy the computer on line during tax free weekend...

Mobile graphics cards?

Are they still using laptop graphics cards, along with the overpriced, underpowered laptop processors?

If so, are they ever going to fix this? Oh well, I guess we can always hope for a mini-tower some decade soon...

Fugly

If it's any consolation, I think the new iMac's kinda fugly, too. Anodized aluminum makes me think of cookware, not computers. This looks more like some blinged-out toaster oven from Oster than a cutting edge consumer PC.

The glossy screen and the graphics card both suck, and I'm surprised they're still shipping with only a gig of RAM. I'm worried about heat issues with that horrid Radeon chipset, not to mention the faster processor. I want a quiet machine, not a noisemaker.

I far prefer the look of the old model. In fact, I'm considering trying to pick one up cheap. Maybe the new iMac looks better in person . . .

I wasn't too sure when watching the live pics but looking at closer up pics on Apple.com I can only say Steve did it again.... what a beauty. And the new iMac will even match my ageing faithfull Powerbook.

Just another couple months till Leopard hits town then the piggy bank gets smashed.
