what's with the removal of the numpad?? that's so lame

Screw the numpad. Most of the time, you're just reaching around it to get your mouse anyway. I switched to a keyboard with no numpad about a year ago, and I don't miss it. My mouse is closer to where I type, and I have more desk space. Unless you're doing finance or typing nothing but IP addresses all day, I doubt you'd miss it either.

but what about VESA wall mounting?
Why have this super-thin, beautiful display that you can use a wireless keyboard/mouse and not be able to mount it?

maybe it will only be available in the 24" model, like it was with the previous line?

It's a unified desktop for offices and businesses, students and others.

It's not a Cinema Display with the workstation built-in.

Wall mounting is for the Cinema displays.

Airflow would be crippled with a large planar surface in the back of the display killing all convective heat transfer.

I was hoping for an iMac more along the lines of the iPhone, but this is the next best thing. I like the slimmer design and new keyboard a lot. Not the higher prices though. What is Apple going to do with the lower end of the market, if they raise the iMac prices and discontinue the Mini? Not a very wise move, IMO.

Illusion

americans + fat fingers = bigger spacing

No, it's an illusion. The top surface of the keycaps on the current Pro keyboard are smaller than the base of the key. You don't notice the spacing because the bases of the keys nearly touch each other, thus you see more of the white keys than you do of the spacing.

Yep. It's me, leaping on Apple's choice of GPU again.

But aren't consumers going to be a bit miffed when they find that the new 20" entry level iMac has overall lower graphics performance (the 2400 series only has a 64-bit memory interface, which considerably hampers performance) versus the lower-spec old 20" iMac (which has an X1600 with a less-hampered, though still rubbish, 128-bit memory interface)? Especially when OpenGL standards haven't yet been updated to take advantage of the DX10-class features of the new chip, so other advantages like geometry shading which are available on the Radeon HD 2xxx series but not the old X1600 are moot for OS X...?

And what about the entry level 17" model which was a direct replacement for the eMac? What are education buyers who don't need the fancy GPU and extra cost going to buy? Dells?

OpenGL has nothing to do with DirectX 10 class features.

OS X 10.5 is OpenGL 2.x standard and Core Animation requires it.

So I've never owned a Mac desktop...will upgrading RAM on these iMacs be easy to do, or is that something that will have to happen on the assembly line? I'm betting it's an assembly line thing, but I'm just curious.

Thanks.

Guess so, as well as many other low end buyers. :( This is a great oppurtunity to get more buyers and expand marketshare, etc with Macs doing so well now.

It just takes one screw to take off the RAM door.

Man...I hope there's a BTO option for the 24" GPU. I'm not too thrilled about the HD2600.

Has anyone noticed if there are any display in/out ports? I'd love to be able to use the iMac screen as a display for my laptop.

Mac Mini

Where is the Mini? Come on now, how long has it been since an update? I want a low cost mac with some power and no screen. I'm not the only one. I have a bad feeling when the store comes back up...

That keyboard, whilst OKish for laptops, sucks for desktop.

Personally, I can't stand the MacBook keyboard, and that new iMac keyboard, obviously takes after the MacBook.

Whats with the giant spacing between each key anyway?

Look at your current keyboard. The keys are wider at the bottom than at the top.

The Macbook-style keys have an identical exposed face size, but are the same size top and bottom, giving the illusion of 'giant spacing'. The tactile surface area is the same.

Keyboards

The two keyboard photos are similar, but they aren't the same. In the rumored image, the design was much more spread out, while the new iMac keyboard is much more compact. Just look at the differences in the position of the arrow keys.

Rumored keyboard:
New iMac keyboard:

There ARE 2 different keyboards. 1 is a wired macbook like keyboard, with numkeys. Looks JUST LIKE the prototype photos. 2nd is a wireless compact design. Both photos are correct.

Interesting new look... it's kind of like some sort of hybrid Pro and iPhone. It has this sort of retro industrial feeling to it, too.

The new keyboards don't make any sense, though! Why would you get rid of the extra keys? Sure, they're not used as much, but they weren't hurting anybody. It's kind of like the old rounded mouse the first iMacs had, which sucked unless you were a child.

Actually, the new keyboard looks almost identical to my MacBook keyboard.

Why'd they take off the number pad?

What's next? Seems odd that he released the bang, pop first (keyboards, imac) and then talked about software for an hour. Do we have a one more thing coming at the end?
