While the following point remains: WHY THE HECK IS THIS NECESSARY IN A DESKTOP?

Because the Lord God Jobs decrees that it be thin?

Let's see - if the new Imac had an Atom processor, no Ethernet, no 1394 (of course), no optical, a mini-PCIe SSD like a netbook - it could be less than .75" thick.

Wow. And nearly useless.

To make it thinner! :)

Interesting. So there is some chance of a redesign at MWSF... :)
Hope so.

And we must follow! :p

Apple found a couple of boxes of them in a dusty warehouse
They wouldn't be the only one to do this. :p

Greetings from Japan.

I'm new to Mac, just got a MacMini at our business, first Mac. I know, I know, there is supposed to be a new MacMini coming out, but we had a computer at the shop die, and we needed a new one, like the same day, and the business would pay for it, so I figured I'd buy a MacMini, because of space restrictions, and we have a good 17" monitor, keyboard etc, that is shared with a Windoze machine (to run the cash register software we need to have) via a KVM switch, so the Mini was a good choice, it has gotten us into the world of Mac! :D

My lovely wife just gave me a nice Christmas present, I can buy a new Mac for our house! :D

I'm leaning towards the iMac, but if the new ones are coming out in a month or so, I'm sure I can wait that long, the question that I have for all of you is does Apple roll out their new products worldwide at the same time?

We get most of our movies etc here 6 months later than the US etc, but we get most of the newest snazziest cell phones and other cool electronic gear earlier than the US does, usually.

As I'm new to Mac, this will be the first time that I've actually paid attention to a new line up of Mac products.

Cheers!

At every Macworld a new product/updates of current products are released, but since this year will be the last time Apple is at Macworld, then I'm not sure if Apple will be continuing to update and release new products in January. There is also WWDC, similar to Macworld, which is around June/July if I'm recall correctly. The iPod line is usually updated at around mid-September, though.

Hmm... ;)

Darn it, the last post of mine that I can easily find only goes back to December 8th.

I was going to link to one of my posts where I got the specs of the new MacBook Pro correct with only one difference (no 500GB hard drive option).

And then where I got the specs of the current iMacs correct with only one difference.

And then where I got the specs of the Early 2008 MacBook Pro correct, with two differences.

I may not work for Apple, but I'm pretty darn good at figuring specs.

When I'm off, I'm off optimistically, which is really a shame for everyone wanting incredible specs... :(

A 30" iMac would be incredible, but when they're that big, you start to get into Mac Pro territory, price-wise. A 30" iMac would be purchased by professionals instead of the Mac Pro.

Also, with the new iMacs getting LED backlighting, the price would be particularly prohibitive, since the standalone 30" Cinema Display, when updated, will remain at its current price point.

Hi, you seem pretty knowledgeable bout iMacs, I had a couple of questions for you if you don't mind:

1) If a new iMac indeed is in the near future, what specs you think it would be...Processors? Ram? expandable memory?

2)I really wat to get an iMac, I was wonderng if an iMac is enough to run Protools with plugins and etc...

THANK YOU

Thanks doubleoseven, I am interested in the iMac, not the iPod (My eldest daughter just got an iPod classic for Christmas).

To show you how little I know about Apple/Mac, how the heck can Apple NOT go to Macworld, would that not be like the Pope NOT going to midnight mass at the Vatican on Christmas eve.............. no?:rolleyes:

Cheers!

MacWorld isn't Apple's convention. It's set up by a magazine and Apple attends. There used to be a MacWorld in New York, but Apple told them that there shouldn't be two shows. When they kept MacWorld New York going, Apple pulled attendance and the show collapsed in on itself.

Three months is plenty of time for Apple to change their mind. Seeing as they've been on the Blu-ray board since before the first trademark (when the brand was "Blue-ray") and have yet to ship a drive or compatibility. Sure...

Links for "Blue-ray" brand name please or never happened.

They absolutely have to! Not doing so would be suicide. Imagine if Apple had never shipped a computer with a DVD drive... e.g. if they just stuck with CD drives.

Frankly, as multimedia centric as Apple is, I have a hard time understanding why they haven't shipped Blu-ray hardware yet. This round of the format war has been over for a while now, and Blu-ray isn't exactly new technology at this point.

You can't put Blu-ray into an iPhone.

And Apple hasn't been interested in building or marketing cutting edge desktop computers and peripherals like displays for more than two years now.

Will that change? If they want to survive. And are smart enough to.

:apple:

It's stupid. I think Blu-ray is dead before it started. It's great tech but it is out of time. Plus, Apple's strategy is about getting content from the web. If they go blu they would be contradicting themselves. The only place it would make sense in is the Mini as an advanced Apple TV.

If you ask me I would lose the optical drive out of the macbook for more battery. The last time I used it on a notebook was like a year and a half ago for installing Linux.

I am hoping for a quad core iMac with OS 10.6.
Got my money ready.
I hope you get your wish! :apple:

I would remove the optical drive and get a bit more battery, a hotter (faster) CPU, and maybe a second HD or 4 RAM slots if they fit.

Watch a new BD movie on a 46" or larger with 7.1 24-bit 96KHz sound.

Then watch and listen to Apple's over-compressed 720p Imovies on the same system.

BD won't be dead until most homes have 50 Mbps download speeds.

Glad to be of help.

I agree with you about Apple not being at Macworld. Macworld without Apple is just...World.

I have guesses for harware specs but the guess I'm most eager to share is the probability of a door w/ a latch very similar to the new unibody macbooks for easier hdd and ram access. Obviously LED display and Mini Display port

Tell me about it

I live in Qatar. My internet connection speed is 500Kbps. And people are all over Blu-ray especially since PS3s are selling like hotcakes. And I hear your example with the 46".

But we are talking about a 20"/24" screen that isn't even HD (yet). DVD is just fine for that. I would rather save my resources for something else.

On the other hand it would make sense in the Mini, but then it wouldn't be the low-end mac. It would be an advanced apple TV, the home theater mac. Which might make sense as Apple pulled all the Mini ads.

We'll see I guess:rolleyes:

But we are talking about a 20"/24" screen that isn't even HD (yet). DVD is just fine for that.

A DVD's native resolution is 640x480¹ - 300K pixels.

The 20" Imac is 1680x1050 - 1764K pixels. That's more than enough for 720p HD - 720p is 1280x720 - 922K pixels.

The 24" Imac is 1920x1200 - 2304K pixels. It is 1080p HD capable - 1080p is 1920x1080 - 2074K pixels.

Believe me, shrinking a two megapixel picture down to 1.8 Mpixel will look a lot better than stretching a 300 Kpixel image to about 2 Mpixel!

My comment, though, was that slow internet speeds will give life to Blu-ray Disc - replying to someone who's opinion is that BD is dead on arrival. Your internet speed and anecdotal evidence supports me.

Yes, DVD is good enough for most people. (Crappy 128Kbps MP3 or AAC is also "good enough" for most people, apparently.)

But, any laptop or desktop with a screen that is much larger than 640x480 should benefit greatly from the high resolution BD image, even if it need to be scaled down to a 1680x1050 or smaller screen.

There's also the advantage that you can buy the BD version of the movie, and play it on your big screen, your desktop, and your laptop. There's little excuse for Apple not to add BD drives as BTO options on all systems.
