This new iMac will have to be thicker.
I don't know how you come to this conclusion as the Xeon E3 has a lower TDP than the current high end

This condiguration will run cooler and quieter , and be more reliable (ECC) memory at about the same performance level of the top end 6700k.

If they do upgrade the drive speed and put in a much better GPU, it should overall be a very good system.

Intel Xeon processors? Won't those require a jet engine to cool them so how would you get such inside an iMac as thin as an iPhone? Also, what's the deal with a ceiling of only 64GB?!? This is meant to be their PRO machine replacement? What am I meant to do with only 64GB of RAM? This is 2017 according to my calendar.

So does this mean that this processor could use quick sync for faster h.264 encoding?

h.265 encoding!

Also
Optane Memory support :

Optane's purpose is to function as a cache drive, remembering regularly accessed data even when you exit a program or your PC is turned off. By doing so, the process of loading data is greatly improved: Intel says games can launch up to 67 per cent quicker and browsers launch five times faster than a computer without as an example.

A Xeon iMac? I don't know why, but I find it hard to believe Apple wants to stuff a Xeon into a chassis like the iMac. Don't the upper-tier i7-equipped iMacs already struggle with thermal throttling under intense load?

the E3 Xeon is basically identical to an i7, except it has ECC memory support. same TDP. E5 would require more engineering or a different case design.

now the question is... does ECC memory exist in laptop memory form factor? i honestly dont know. There's basically zero advantage of using a Xeon in this form factor unless there is ECC memory for it.

Xeon E3s are basically just i7s without the iGPU...

exactly. and ECC memory support. without ECC memory there is zero advantage to using them
[doublepost=1491522796][/doublepost]ah yes they do have ECC memory in the SODIMM factor. so it is possible they could put them in the iMac...

Why does Apple always choose AMD over nVidia??? I feel like the Macs' GPUs are their weakest link when it comes to satisfying the needs and wants of pro users, and nVidia has always been a step (a big step) ahead of AMD. Their newest 10XX series cards blow even the best AMDs outta the water, and they've already been available for several months now. Has anyone even heard anything about AMD's 5XX series yet?

Keep in mind this is going to be $4000+ machine. Estimating even the base iMacs with i5s are going to be $2000+. Just look at the Surface Studio desktops for a predictor of pricing.

Couple reasons

AMD uses the open based OpenCL for GPU compute. Nvidia uses proprietary CUDA. Apple preffered to use the open standard for their software.

AMD is also the only one of the two GPU companies of note that will do custom order. Nvidia sells you the GPU as is. AMD will make tweaked or custom versions (Like the ones in the consoles). Which was necessary for many of the thermal limits in Apple computers (Mac Pro).

These long release cycles are getting longer and longer across all product lines...people should stop buying all this stuff so Apple can actually be forced to innovate and be cutting edge

I wish I could "double like" this post.

Apple is selling kit that is long in the tooth. Even their "it's the future of computing" pro iPad is 1.5 years old.

The spreadsheet product suits are wrecking that company we all love.

I am gonna go on a limbo and say Tim is being hypocrites, if the rumor is true. He has been saying who needs computer after the iPad Pro release!

Tim was wrong, bean counters aren't visionaries.. i think Steve Jobs didn't have as big say in his appointment as everyone believes

oh yes it exists, not super common but I have 64GB of ECC with xeon CPU's in two of my laptops ( HP Zbook 17 and Lenovo P70 ) the first ECC sodimms I ever saw was in a Clevo with a desktop CPU back in about 2014

The front page rumours of late have been fantastic! Apple is returning the focus to the pro market. I for one am very much looking forward to see whats in store! Its also refreshing that Apple are speaking directly to us, no more unnecessary secrecy.

I think AMD is fine for what it is, but lets not Kid ourselves. APPLE makes expensive top of the line products, NVIDIA and INTEL are the only components that make sense for TOP OF THE LINE hardware..
The problem with Nvidia is is that they prefer to support CUDA, while Apple has made it clear they intend to go with openCL and openGL. I say this knowing that Apple's support for OpenGL and OpenCL is a joke. AMD on the other hand has thrown their support behind these frameworks.

Who do half the posters here assume the "pro" users only do video editing? And another half believe the iMac is quiet? Try a 40 minute build and then dare to tell me you didn't hear the fans :)

I want a Mac with nvidia inside for gaming. I also want a decent CPU, lots of ram and storage for work. On the same machine, don't bother telling me about consoles or a second dedicated gaming computer. And i want it to be QUIET on long builds or gaming sessions, not only on idle. AMD may be close to nvidia on computing power, but not on TDP.
