I use mute switch for screen lock. And no, no software solution can replace that. Mute switch apple, or gtfo.

P.S.
Am I the only one that is really annoyed by apple lately? I mean, I own a lot of their products, and use only their products. But if they continue on this path, I will most certainly switch. Just can't replace my macs, love OSX far more than Linux :(

it's the exact opposite for me. they seem to go exactly the way i want them too.

It'd be extremely stupid to get rid of the rotation lock. Maybe it's because 90% of iPad users don't even know that you can select between "mute" and "rotation lock" functionality? I'm surprised they still have volume buttons in place :D

But that'd be a deal breaker for me.

why would they sacrifice the mute switch over thinness? there comes the point when function should be more important than a few 0.0x mm. especially with most people putting it into a bulky case anyway

next thing you know they will require their own headphones to be used because the device is too thin to handle the standard headphone jack, so stupid

The same dumb reason they got rid of the ambient light sensor in the latest iPod Touch (fifth generation). That's when you reach a point where the thinness is plainly stupid.

the mute switch doesnt have anything to do with slimmer profile...
mute+vibration exist in 6.9mm thick iphone 6 so ipad with 7mm has no reason to get rid of the mute

It looks like the new iPad will get 2GB of ram and improved graphics. The image clearly shows an A8X chip.

so:
-TouchID
-2Gb RAM
-A8x
-thinner profile
-gold option
-32 Gb 64 Gb 128 GB options for the same money
-WiFi ac

seems that it is a nice touch to upgrade for those with ipad 4 and earlier and a slightly upgrade BUT still an upgrade for those with ipad air as well

But bloody overly dramatic there broc. Switch to another platform, let me know if anyone actually cares.

overplayed.

What about that :apple:Watch?
He didnt do too bad :)

Ps. You pleased you got your 5.5 iPhone? ;)

Apple watch is no where near the mass production stage. So it is much easier for Apple to keep it secret.

However, rumours of Apple watch is all over the internet. We just haven't seen real product just yet. But there is a leak on the fram of the watch I believe

I was thinking about that the other day, if they do get rid of the mute/rotation button, couldnt they just add a software function for it in its place?
So from the lock screen you could have a button for Mute and one for Screen Rotation. And when your iPad is unlocked you can just swipe up to reveal the same buttons in Control Center.
Or even have an option where you can set the Home button so that a triple tap will either lock the rotation or even alter the rotation and lock it at the same time.

Makes you wonder if Apple never introduced a physical switch for screen rotation would people have wanted one?
I've locked my iPad in landscape mode and any app that requires portrait mode automatically switches to that mode. So I never really need to worry about switching rotations.

As long as they don't get rid of the auto brightness sensor like they did with iPod Touch 5th gen (Grrrr!) then I'm defo getting one.

Just like when Apple released the first PC without a disk drive. They're visionaries brah, just you want and see. This is all part of the big plan.

Prepare for Disappointment

At this point there's not much more Apple can do to make the iPad interesting again. It's a either you like it or don't situation now. And I would think anyone who wants one probably has one now.

Sure you'll have the idiots who will stand in line to get the newest iGadget and it may be sold out for a few weeks, but I don't see it becoming a best seller long term.

As someone who has a maxed out ATT iPad Air - which I hate because I paid a $1,000 for it, there's pretty much nothing they can do that would make me want to swap it for several years.

I never use that switch anyway - just holding down the volume down button for half a second mutes it (even if I just want to reduce the volume a little). I've got so used to using Control Centre to lock rotation on my iPhone that I don't even think of doing it any differently on my iPad.

I'd be quite happy to lose the headphone jack, but only if they came up with a decent wireless option.

Frankly, I have never used the mute button on my iPad. Even for rotation lock, there are alternatives already built into iOS 8, so a physical button is not required. I could see the removing the volume buttons over time as they now have alternatives for that as well.

Less mechanical parts means less things that break and also means less opening for dust or water to get in.

In other words, it not just about thinness.

At least that's how I see it.

You can take away my freedom, but you can't take away my rotation lock button thingy. What is it again?

They could stick a USB port there.

Visionaries work on groundbreaking technology, not removing a button for no reason (it's just annoying, not "revolutionary").

And yes, it may be possible to replace the functionality with a home button triple click or a multitouch gesture (at least on a jailbroken device).

Apple is notorious for removing useful features from their hardware and software products (sometimes they bring it back). The general move to satisfy masses with oversimplification isn't good. Even Aperture 3 is gone in favour of a glorified viewer called iPhoto. But no worries, there'll be companies to fill the void making high-quality products for fewer customers, instead of high volume hipster toys

This is my question. The mute switch exists on the iPhone so why would they need to get rid of it on the iPad?

Hardware wise I'd like 3 things.

Not of which will happen now, or, knowing Apple may probably never happen, and they are very fundamental things I would of likes for years.

1: Separate Stereo speakers that face the user (not 2 speakers at one end directing sound sideways away from the user)

2: A flash unit for the Camera, so that if you wish to take a photo in dim lighting conditions, it will come out vastly better than without a flash.

3: The aspect ratio to be a little wider, so it's not a choice of thick black bars, or losing either side of the screen when watching video.

None of these I will get this year, or probably for many years, if ever :(

I don't mind, but I REALLY wish Apple was not so arrogant, and perhaps did produce more than one design so people did have a choice, as not everyone wants the same thing.

interestingly, it looks like from the spacing on the processor that there are 3 characters after the apple symbol ... and if you manipulate the image of the processor a little it looks like it is A8X.

maybe they needed to boost the GPU for a 401ppi screen?

You are my best friend now haha

I hope you are correct :) I will gladly buy a 64GB iPad Air 2 if it comes with 2GB of RAM, and an A8X would be great too!
