Frankly, I have never used the mute button on my iPad. Even for rotation lock, there are alternatives already built into iOS 8, so a physical button is not required. I could see the removing the volume buttons over time as they now have alternatives for that as well.

Less mechanical parts means less things that break and also means less opening for dust or water to get in.

In other words, it not just about thinness.

At least that's how I see it.
I use it all the time and I have an iPad Air with iOS 8

Posts like this annoy the crap out of me. Just because YOU don't use a feature doesn't mean there's no one else in the world that DOES. I happen to like having the switch to lock my phone. It's CONVENIENT. God forbid things be easy and functional - because THINNESS is the ONLY thing that matters.
I agree, I rather have more features that I don't use than none I might want. I use the switch all the time on my Air and I find it useful.

I like what I am reading on the rumors for the new iPad Air. Might have to consider replacing my 4th Generation. One additional thing I would like to see is an anti-glare screen. I thought I saw a rumor to that affect somewhere.

I use mute switch for screen lock. And no, no software solution can replace that. Mute switch apple, or gtfo.
:(

Yeah I use the lock button all the time and take that over 0.5mm thinner size, which I can't care less.

Am I the only one that is really annoyed by apple lately? I mean, I own a lot of their products, and use only their products. But if they continue on this path, I will most certainly switch. Just can't replace my macs, love OSX far more than Linux :(

On a forum of apple haters you ask if you're the only one? Strange.

Annoyed? What path? Switch to what, android? If you think android is on par with iOS and won't have its own annoyances (software and hardware - gapgate?) ....well, good luck with your switch.

While the A8X revelation is interesting, it is actually disappointing in a way.

While it means that we will most likely be getting a Retina HD @3x screen, all previous "X" processors have been generally underpowered in relation to their previous generation brethren.

I can't help but think that the new iPad Air @3x & A8X will only just match the current model with @2x & A7 in performance, and possibly be slightly worse in some benchmarks and real life usage experience.

Not necessarily. If Apple releases iPad with the multitasking functionality that was discovered already buried in iOS 8, the A8X is used to excuse why iPhones don't also get it, or iPad Mini as I suspect.

You know Apple won't ever cite RAM for an iOS device, so the X graphics serve as a necessary differentiator. Apple will NOT increase resolution which steals too much thunder from flagship iPhone, and further diminishes wow factor from the potential iPad Pro in the spring.

All this sounds good. It might make me switch from my mini retina to the air 2. It would be nice if they could get it as light as the mini is right now.

I was excited that they might add more memory to fix the iPad Air safari issues but it looks like they might be adding more pixels.... Ugh.

The Ipad three sucked because of more pixels without the hardware to run it, iPad Air sucked because it didn't have enough memory...

I am taking a wait and see on this one.

A prominent analyst with a decent track record wrote that an iPad mini update was unlikely this fall. That kind of makes sense, pushing sales to the higher margin Air 2, perhaps a way to lower the price of the mini, and they can gage the impact of the large iPhone on mini sales.

My guess, slightly higher clocked A8 with 6 core PowerVR (instead of 4).

The battery life with that would be substantially enhanced (several hours more) and the performance enhanced 35% from the Air.

That is if they don't increase the resolution of the screen. If they do increase the resolution, GPU performance has little increase in usage (though huge increase in the GPU itself), but CPU time and battery life is increased substantially.

Oh man, don't get rid of the mute-lock rotation button in future models.

In fact, on my iPad Air on iOS 8.0.2. I use it all the time, because the Auto Rotation doesn't work smoothly. When I cycle the switch, it seems to help.

In all seriousness, I find it much easier to have a certain functionality accessible at the tip of your fingers, then to go into a software menu.

Hmm, as long as a new screen with accompanying A8X chip doesn't become the next iPad 3 with an A5X (what I'm using), I'm interested.
The situation is a bit different. iPad 2 used an A5, which was on the same 45nm process node as A5X. This alleged A8X should be on 20nm (as A8 did), which is a step forward from the 28nm used by A7.

What's with all this 3rd gen iPad hate? I'm using one now (with iOS 8) and it's still great. Stutters a little sometimes, but it's very infrequent.

Forgot to say, I personally would be fine with them getting rid of the 3.5mm port. Could be replaced with a 2.5 or simple by the lightening port, they'd just need to bundle an adapter for whichever they chose.

I don't see the need to increase the resolution though - the reruns looks perfect. Like they said at the time, if you can't see the pixels why do you need more? Would just slow things down, surely?

The same guy (gal?) did say iPhone 6 Plus may be released a quarter later than the 4.7" brother. We know how this turns out. People who are fine with the larger size of Air would always go for the Air, while those who love the smaller form factor would stand still and wait if there is no update to it. So pushing them back might not really make much sense, and might even lose some of your holiday sales of a brand-new iPad mini.

Frankly speaking, the screen space size in points of iPad over iPhone 6/6+ is ~3.1x/2.6x, while both the physical display size in pixels of iPad 9.7" over iPhone 5.5", and iPad 7.9" over iPhone 4.7" are ~3.0x and ~3.5x, respectively. So yes, 5.5 might cannibalize iPad mini (yet the screen is 2.31 times larger and displays 2.6 times more content in the iOS point coordinate system), but there is still a mass volume of 4" iPhones, 4.7" iPhone and non-iOS devices that can synthesize with the iPad mini's form factor.

I think I would wet myself with laughter if they upped the DPI, but kept the measly 1Gig of RAM. I'm hoping for it, for comedic value alone.

Watching all the Non-critical thinking apple defenders bending over backwards to belittle those who dare question Apple, would be worth the wasted iPad year, IMHO.

That's what I'm banking on. I'm not afraid of the A8X as long as scaling dmeant affect fluidity.

Doubtful. The A8 is already 50% faster in GPU than the A7. So if the A8X is another 50% faster than the A8, it would be more than enough to drive a 3X Retina HD display... Not that I think it's needed on the iPad. I'd just rather have faster graphics at the current great resolution.

This is my question. The mute switch exists on the iPhone so why would they need to get rid of it on the iPad?

I think the mute switch on the iPhone makes more sense since it's more likely to sound off than an iPad.

Or they can do what is right and move the jobs back where they belong, but that would take some time.

Where is that, the US? Not in this lifetime :D

Apple watch is no where near the mass production stage. So it is much easier for Apple to keep it secret.

However, rumours of Apple watch is all over the internet. We just haven't seen real product just yet. But there is a leak on the fram of the watch I believe

I hope you mean this in the past tense...

Just like when Apple released the first PC without a disk drive. They're visionaries brah, just you want and see. This is all part of the big plan.

Meh, can't even remember the last time I had to use a CD.

I of course could be wrong, but using an A8X is a pretty good indicator that the larger iPad Air at least, will go @3x.

Wouldn't be surprised if the iPad rmini either doesn't get updated right now, or stays @2x with an A8. Shame, because I really like the 7.9" form factor over the 9.7" - even with my 6+

Battery life must be incredibly improved over last year's iPad Air which was very good to begin with already. :) so excite

X for more ram and a few minor clock changes. The more ram is what irks me as a recent iPhone 6 buyer.

I think you are right but it's a non-issue. I doubt people would notice outside of benchmarks or graphically intensive games. The A7 is still stupidly powerful on the current screen and underutilised by apps.

Also there is Metal. Only a handful of games are using it so far and it will bring performance gains across the board once more developers are writing for it. Lastly, graphically intensive games have often not run at native resolution and likely still won't.

Those are fair points. With Swift and Metal, there should also be software optimizations that will help out...I might have to abandon the 7.9" form factor though, as I fear there will again be differentiation between the two screen sizes again.

Can't see the iPad rMini go @3x as well right now, as it appears the iPad Air will. Probably won't get the RAM this time around either.
