I ordered a 14”. I’m not a huge fan of the notch because I utilize the whole menu bar, however I am a massive fan of the unit, and it’s gigantic improvements in general.

I’m not sure what the gripes are about the form factor - for the 14” it’s smaller in height than the 13”.

Also 3.5 pounds for a computer that can work as hard as this - if folks don’t like the weight there is the MBA, which is an awesome computing device.

Everyone calling the notch a no go neglect the fact that it will only take about a week until there will be a third party app to make the additional 74 pixels black. Since it is Mini LED the backlight will be off and you will not be able to see it anymore, no matter what content you are looking at. And as tons of people are complaining, I bet apple will build this as an additional option into their display settings soon.
I am looking forward to an option to make the menu bar background black to have the best of both worlds. Until that’s possible I am totally fine with my notchbook!
A week?

everyone wants ports and then they complain the body is too thick. you can't have both if you want ports like hdmi. fyi, if you don't actually use your machine for work, hdmi is standard for projectors. so it is handy. personally ports are irrelevant to me. i'm more interested in thermals which a bigger body also improves. i think the design looks great. i like the chunkier panel. the thin panels are a weak spot when moving these machines.

like the current ipad pro and iphones pro , these machines looks rock solid..impressive performance, impressive display with impressive battery life
I mean in this era of tech, Apple is again leading the world on the overall product/price ratio

I think these photos say more about the shortcomings of the iPhone* for photography than the "thickness" of the new MBP design:

Photography 101 folks: don't take close-up portraits with a short focal length lens or the exaggerated perspective will make your subject's nose look enormous in proportion to the rest of their face. Or, in this case, don't take close ups of a laptop or it will make the edge of a MacBook look ridiculously thick. Take a step back and use a longer lens! (Oh, wait, the lens is already to long to fit in the phone without a camera bulge... maybe the neural engine can fake it?)

This was most obvious in an earlier story on the subject where people complaining about the thickness failed to notice that the person holding it apparently had a thumb the size of Manhattan.

(*I'm guessing there, but what are the odds?)

Serious question. Do you think my wife will notice the difference between my current 13 inch MacBook Air and the 14 inch? And I’m fully aware of the incoming penis size jokes.

Depends. The notch will give it away. I had a 2020 i5 Air and really wanted a M1 Air. So I bought a case for my i5 and used it for about a month before I bought the M1 and then put the case on the M1 and no one was the wiser...

I don't mean this to sound snarky, but I would really like to know the age of each person talking about how "thick" this computer is. I had to carry a laptop around in the early 2000s for literally miles per day, so to me these still seem very thin. In fact, I'd argue that laptops used to look better when they were a little thicker than the outgoing MBPs.

To some it “looks” thicker, but it’s the same thickness as the previous model (13” >> 14”). I guess the new 16” is a little thicker (like the thickness of a piece of paper).

I’ve seen it in person, and I don’t think it’s that bad. If anything I think shiny Ive put form over function, and we lost things they’re putting back (Ports, larger screens, etc).

Was it uphill both ways in the snow?

No that's just bad sw design, the bottom edge of the menu bar should be flush with the bottom edge of the notch.
There's going to be two ways to look at it... I personally think that the menubar being flush would make the notch look far more intrusive rather than letting folk know "hey, you never use this space anyhow".

When was the last time you used a floppy drive? When did you last use a USB-A device? Apology accepted.
Won't apologize for being pedantic but... Most USB devices do not have USB-A (thumb drives are an obvious exception). USB-A is the host side connector. Devices use USB-B (micro is the most common) and USB-C. I do not use USB-A much as I have USB-C to USB-B cables. The only cables I have with USB-A connectors are ones I have not thrown out yet. USB-A was a horrible connector and can not go away fast enough.

I don’t care how thick this thing is, I just hope it’s got enough airflow to not throttle down the chipset or throw random 750% kernel tasks like my thin Ive wet dream 2018 MBP

You don’t though. The screen is 74 pixels taller than the outgoing screen and the notch and wider menu bar live in that 74 pixels. You have more space now that the menu bar is out of the way. And you have the same space in full screen mode except when you call up the menu. In that scenario the menu is called up in the extra pixel zone instead of dropping down to squish your menu like it does now… so you still have more space than you do now.
This only works if your current menubar is empty in the middle. To me who has some status update stuff in the menubar plus utilities, notch WILL block them, plus some applications menu items are longer than half the menu bar length. Also don't forget zoomed-in view is an option, which means less menu bar space as a result.

Basically, Apple sacrifices menubar space to achieve 16:10 for on-screen contents and push menubar upwards. For some like you it is some extra screen space. To me it doesn't come without trade-off, which is losing full menubar. The most ideal situation would be either justifying notch harder or bring back top bezel so top and bottom remain symmetric while shrinking camera module height.

No, the SW design is impeccable because from that menu bar begins the full 16:10 aspect ratio full native 2x scaling pixels
You dont want the notch with slimmer bezels to mess up with your display real estate and full app scaling

“Proper” Space Grey, what does that even mean. Apple gets to decide the design. Too many people here who want others to think they bought the pro grade laptop, and that pastel color will give you away. That’s really what this is all about.
Peoples taste vary, but the pastel iMacs look like a range of Macs designed for your daughters bedroom. Some of us want the iMac to look like a business machine, which again, some of us use them for.
